The Unsightly Face of Feminism

Gender equality, also known as sex equality, gender egalitarianism, sexual equality or equality of the genders is one of the most pressing matters of recent times. It is a view that both men and women should receive equal treatment in every situation. 

Gender equality seeks to create equal opportunities in law enforcements and social situations such as democratic activities and equal opportunities and pay for work. Now a days which is also known as Feminism.

"Feminism is equality". 

People often misinterpret it to be a movement that is anti-male and malicious towards men, but feminism is about empowering both men and women to break out of gender roles. It's about understanding the political, economic, and social systems of oppression we've created and how that affects the way society, and we, perceive ourselves. 

There are many misconceptions about what Feminism actually is. Many think that ignoring the difference between GENDER, blaming ALL MEN when we are upset with the ACTIONS of CERTAIN MEN, telling men not to be nice to women, telling men not to hold doors open for women, or not to look them in the eyes and say "Hello." Letting women get away with hitting men, ignoring struggles faced by men, identifying any and all compliments as cat-calling or harassment (although sometimes they are), ignoring female privilege; all of these are the content of Feminism.

But it is not. These misconceptions associated with the label of feminism may serve as an impediment to men playing more active roles in the movement as a whole.

Sometimes people question the need for feminism. People tend to think that equal rights have already been achieved now that women in "industrialized" nations have the right to work and vote. 

We doubt that there is any country that has complete equality for both sexes. Women might have the privilege of working but there's still the glass ceiling, the gender and racial pay gap, and sexual harassment in the workplace, amongst other things. 

In many parts of the world, females are subjected to honor killings, domestic abuse, and female infanticide, and governments do little to help them.

While some people can causally look past the gravity of such cases, feminists try to make sure that these crimes don't go unreported.

Feminism plays a major role in exposing certain issues that would otherwise be ignored.

Individual differences exist in human behavior, across sexes and sexual orientations and cultures and countries. 

All women aren't born to be homemakers. All men aren't rapists.

Is that so hard to understand?

It is important to remember that gender roles have always been vicious. Men seem to always have the upper hand. A woman's life is a tough life. But guess what? Life is tough, in general.

Anyhow, women have had it bad. Years and decades and centuries came and went and the woman has had it harder than the man. It is true.

We can all cite a million examples of how women are no less than men. We can all cite yet another million examples of how the modern woman has simply had enough. We're feminists. We have rights. We are bold. We do not hesitate to go and get what we deserve.

So, we shall simply cut to the chase.

Feminism, according to Google, is the advocacy of women's rights. In pop culture as well as politics and educational institutes, feminism is a most favorite topic. We've taken it upon ourselves to rule out all the things that feminism is not. 

Why? We hope the following clear that out for you:

           By definition, a feminist doesn't have to be a woman. A man can just as well support women's liberation.

         Feminism is not believing that all men are misogynists and that all of them are potential rapists. That in fact is misandry.

         Special privileges such as female quotas in colleges, reserved seats for women in public transport etc aren't women's rights. And if they are, women can never be equal to men. Because this isn't equality.

        Gender equality and feminism are intertwined. Therefore, the rights enjoyed by a woman should ideally be the same as those enjoyed by a man.

     Justice and equality are different. Justice is getting what you deserve. Equality is when everyone gets the same thing. Feminism is delicately related to both.

       Feminism is not about showing men that we're better. It's about showing ourselves that we're competent.

        The whole world is still inherently patriarchal, yes. But matriarchy is not the solution, it's also not feministic. Because being the more powerful sex is in no way availing one's rights.

In summation, we'd just like to say that gender prejudices and power play should not be confused with feminism. And if it's gender equality that we really want, we need to act like it. That empty seat in the Metro can much rather be taken by a tired middle-aged man than a female youth who's only just left her house to get to a party.

Also, wrongdoings like adultery should have just one consequence, no matter who did it, the husband or the wife. No one should have to put up with things they don't want to. That's equality.

Special treatment of any kind is not.

Let be honest, both gender equality and feminism are concepts that have several contradicting opinions and underlying speculations behind them. Much like many thoughts in society, finding an equilibrium is perhaps impossible. Yet, gender equality has eventually surfaced itself to become a thoroughly discussed and questioned concept that has now, finally, arose both action and understanding.

 

The Crazy Creatives, whilst highlighting what needs to be done and emphasizing the dents in equality, want to bring light onto what's being done and how it's continuing to be implemented. Several policies, organisations and charities have brought action to the concept of gender equality. 

UN WOMEN

In July 2010 the United Nations took an iconic step. They created an UN Women - an organisation focused purely on taking one large step towards equality. The organisation focuses on three key points:

   To support inter-governmental bodies

   To help Member States implement the gender quality standards

   To lead and coordinate the UN system's work on gender equality as well as promote accountability.

Legislation (law) and Ministries: 

It is through the creation of effective law a country is able to eradicate an issue. In regards to instigating gender equality, several countries have implemented legislation and ministries in order to promote the concept. 

India: signatory to Convention for the Elimination of Discrimination Against

Women and Uniform Civil Code

Australia: Anti-Discrimination Act 2004

Taiwan: Gender Equity Education Act

United Kingdom:  Equity Act 2010

Afghanistan:  Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs 

Philippines: Philippine Commission of Women Affairs 

Scotland: Gender Equality Duty in Scotland

While it cannot be denied- no nation has truly reached complete gender equality, however, through effective legislation and operative ministries, nations are uniting in order to achieve such ideals. Gender Equality is certainly not about female domination, nor is it instigated to be about such.

The purpose of feminism does not derive from female superiority but from the ideal of equal opportunities and rights. 

The journey has begun, while the destination may still be far- we shall arrive.

Thank you so much for bringing this misrepresented and often misunderstood concept to attention. So many people do not understand what feminism entails and use it as an umbrella term for a lot of unrelated things. Maybe now they will be a bit more clear.
