I was just thinking on the relationship between Manik, Dhruv, Mukhti and Cabir and this post is the result of it.
Everyone has one or the other parental figure missing in their lives and have never seen a good example of "Love" and have formed a family of their own. Their friendship goes beyond the normal code of best friends.
Manik: In his case every relationship is give and take. Then is this why he is always taking on the responsibility of others? Is this his way of giving? Or is this his way of ressuring himself that he is "needed".
That Nandini may not 'need' him is something which will scare him and make him insecure. If she does not need him, then there is no reason for her to stick with him. Since he anyway does not have anything else to offer or so he thinks.
Fab5 is an exception to the Give-Take rule.Fab5 his His!He is the one who is the basis of the group. He keeps them together. As a group, they belong to him, his to protect and care for even if as Individuals, he seems to know he doesn't own them.He won't ask anything in return but he will keep giving. He does not take anything from them. Now, it is a mystery if he realizes that or not. Maybe he thinks that they all should need him because he sure as hell needs Fab5 to keep his sanity!Just to follow the Give-Take rule!
His relationship with Dhruv is again seems to be a case of give and take. Dhruv saved him and hence Manik is giving everything he can to Dhruv. There is some kind of inequality in this relationship. Manik almost acts as a parent-figure. He is holding on this so called friendship so tightly because he absolutely knows for sure that Dhruv needs him and is dependent on him at every point. It makes him feel better about himself.
Inequality is the basis of this relationship.Though, you would wonder who is the lesser in the relationship all the time.Dhruv, who seemed to have no will of his own and followed Manik religiously, who never stood up to him and still hesitates and goes all shy and head-down if Manik gets in one of his moods.Or Manik, who is definitely not himself with Dhruv when it is a difficult situation. Before it felt like, it is only Dhruv with whom he was himself. But nope! Manik can't be himself and say what he feels because he always has to put Dhruv's happiness first.Even if he doesnt want to or protests or gets angry, in the end he lets it all go to think about what Dhruv wants first.More like a Parent-Child relationship which might not be very healthy!
-- Yes.. Manik has a parent-child relationship with Dhruv. Don't you think this applies to others as well? Some how feel that he takes the brunt of all other's pain and issues. Kind of lonely existence where he cannot share his pain with others.
What about Aliya. Was he this sad when they broke-up? It does not seems like. More like he was relieved. Was this love or just a habit? It was convenient, it was comfort zone. They did have something going on, a familiarity, loyalty. But they were friends who pretended that they had more than friendship. Because then, you don't have to open yourself to others.
His relationship with Mukhti is again similar to Dhruv. He protects her, but does not feel a connection where he can share his problems.
Newly emerging friendship with Cabir is on good thing in Manik's life. It started with both of them being on the same boat of failed Love or relationship outside of Fab5. This was a new dimension since Manik never had any equal footing with anyone else in Fab5 where he get to share his problems too.
I think that this friendship was just hiding behind everything big going on.It was in the background, trying not to be noticed with everything excitable and in open going on.Only to be in our face and wonderful when it started showing. Cabir has always been hiding his perceptiveness and sharp mind behind behind all the fooling, mockery and laughs. If you see the first week of the show, there is a scene when it shows very clearly that Cabir knew that Manik-Alya relationship was very fickle, and not genuine from Manik's side. He asks them both since how long they have been dating, Manik doesn't remember. He looks at Manik and it is quite clear that Manik knows that Cabir knows! And expects him to not say anything else about it.It think that they have always been in tune and understand how both of them work! Added is the bonus of equality on every level! They share stuff with each other that they cannot with others. They also pursue each other relentlessly till the other gives up and tells what is bothering them! They also don't shy away from calling each other out on their BS!
-- Cabir-Manik's real friendship came into forte when Cabir felt that he and Manik are in a same boat. They have one of the few balanced friendships. Just love Cabir. Beautifully written character. But, another thing is, why does all of them kind of hid their innermost self from each other. Manik hides his goodness, Dhruv is totally secluded, Mukhti her inner fears, Cabir his perceptiveness and Aliya, her need to side with her brother. They are becoming their own person and hence all these are coming out only now. Part of growing up I suppose.
Mukhti: Her constant turmoil with her parents and within herself wants to make sure that her so called family FAB5 remains constant. Any slight change causes her to loose balance. She always kept checking if Manik and Alya are together. She was the most vocal about their relationship to keep reassuring herself that they are well. Is this because they are her parent-figures? She is even forceful about Dhruv being with Nandini once she came to know of his love. Is this because her incapability to trust the other gender and being in a relationship causes her to live through other's love stories?
She seems to have great bonding with Cabir. But does she share her inner problems with him always? Looks like she keeps so much bottled up inside her that she is angry all the time.
Cabir: Most normal of all and yet in a sea of pain. He has so much positivity to spread around. But was he always like this? or did the failure of his relationship and coming out of closet made him the way he is now? Nothing gives self-confidence than facing through your worst fears and come out of it. This makes you believe in yourself. He has an assurance about himself now that was missing earlier. He was prankster, one who was all fun.
This thing, him always being a prankster! He is a prankster, a fun person at heart but suddenly, but just like Manik, he uses a Mask to hide how he is feeling so that others won't worry about him.Who knows how long ago he started dating Raghav, but he was hiding a lot and dealing with not telling them about himself and his relationship since very long! We were shown how he stops outside the room to put on the Cool & Chilled mask to hide his despair over the break-up!
--Yes. What could be the reason why they all hide who they are from each other? Only now Cabir and Manik are beginning to show what they are, at least with each other. That is a good sign of growing up.
Now there is a maturity in him. This makes him see Manik in a new light. Hence him stepping up to take on the issues Manik is facing.
But he is yet to grow. He still have some resentment towards world and especially towards his mom. He needs to understand that world will always fear which it thinks as 'different' or 'not normal' when we all know that there is nothing called normal. He need to accept the world for what it is.
Quite opposite of it, I think that despite it all he doesn't feel resentment towards his mom.He is disappointed because she promised she will love him no matter what.He is mature, hence not going up to her to shout and storm out to live with his friend. He tied talking to her for 7 hours, even after that he didn't blame her for not understanding him.He feels that she is ashamed, so he leaves.
-- Yes, may be. Somewhere he blames Harshad for all this trouble. But he was just a tool or a catalyst. If Harshad hadn't done what he did, this issue would have cropped up later when Cabir came out with his secret. This is the distinction he still need to understand which comes with time and distance.
Aliya: A girl torn between her blood family and made-up family. We have only seens glipmses of her. So much of her is yet undiscoverd. Her constant need to be with Manik as a couple, was it really love from her end? Or just the need to keep everything as-is? Because of her brother's unpredability, she wants to assure herself that all her other relationships are predictable, including the one with Manik. Hence her extreame reaction when some one else threatened it.
Aliya was meant to be the source to creative conflict since the day she was revealed to be Harshad's sister. I see her choosing her friends over her brother and how much she knows him, how she never falls for the BS he spews. To her, it has always been a choice of taking one side or another. This time,Alya the sister is taking over because she truly feels that Harshd is repenting and that they are on an equal footing after their trap and putting him in jail. They got him back for everything, so they are equals.
She doesn't understand how much damage has been done to Cabir and Mukti's life, with Raghav being an innocent and unnecessary victim of their stupid beef. She only sees how they got him back for everything, but not the difference between it's effects..
Manik getting injured, almost got him amputated. Harshad being thrown into the water and struggling for hours doesn't make up for that and the hate-crime done against Cabir-Raghav.It is just as unforgivable if in their place it was one of our straight-couples!
One video destroys Cabir's life, and the other makes Harshad sleep with a girl to show how Gay he wasn't.And it is weird how Alya is suddenly asking Mukti to forgive the guy!Forgiveness is the last thing which should be asked for.A favor would have been better.
She needs to understand that she can make a choice between Fab5 & Harshad but for them it is not.Her wanting her brother to be safe and not suffer is so normal. But the others do not care about Harshad, they care about her as their friend. She stands in front of them as Harshad's sister, so that is how she is getting treated too. If she is allowed to express her individualism apart from Fab5, then why compromise on Cabir's individuality? Why should he think like a member of Fab5 when she is not!
-- A beautiful conflict, isn't it? All of them had their personal demons. What will each of them do when they have to choose between personal justice and of a group. So looking forward to this track.
Dhruv: Most silent of all. Does his 'attacks' make him feel insecure as a person?
Yes, they do! I don't think he remembers any of it! Coming to himself only to seeing the result of his own violence must be very disturbing! He doesnt do good with extreme feelings, hence his need to be Zen.
Is this why he let others take a lead? It was clear that he did not approve of the ragging FAB5 did, but why did he keep quite? Afraid to loose someone, i.e. Manik who kept the world at bay for him? Whenever he wants something he goes to Manik, like a kid going to his parents asking for candy. He holds himself back and let others do all the work.
What about his so called love for Nandini? Is this because he saw another 'Manik' in her, who is capable of keeping the world out of his reach? Then he is again in his comfort zone and he does not have to do much in this relationship either. Every time someone else had to push him, give approval for him to woo her. Was he really in love with her or the idea of being in love with someone who is as strong as Manik.
Slowly he is coming on his own, but still a long way to go. The emerging relationship with Aliya is also another factor which is making him take some responsibility, to become his own self.
It is only his character development, taking on Alya's responsibility like that, telling her so confidently to count on him.
But obviously, a lot to learn and a long way for him.I find it funny how he accepted that Harshad deserves a second chance just because Alya said so, just because she said that she sees how he is trying to change. So in character, he trusts her here just like he trusted her on the Nandini debacle!
In his desire to help her, he totally forgot to think about Cabir and Mukti's stance - like, he actually thought that if Manik says Yes, if he is fine then everything and everyone will be fine! He is adorable in his not intended insensitivity here because he has always been so single-minded and genuinely doesn't see what he is asking for.
--Yes. Being sheltered all his life by FAB5, especially Manik, he is surely making lot of assumptions and expectations from others without thinking it through. I am wondering about his reaction when he comes to know of Manik and Nandini's saga.
