Film Review: Singham Returns'
Rohit Shetty's Ajay Devgn starrer action flim is fairly decent despite a predictable story

The larger-than-life Baji Rao Singham of the 2011 action flick Singham (meaning lion) returned to theatres this weekend.
Ajay Devgn reprises his honest cop role in Singham Returns' corrupt political scenario, only this time he's in Mumbai instead of a small town on the Goa-Maharashtra border.
For a change, director Rohit Shetty tries to bring a few social messages through his commercial offering. The Golmaal series director attempts to tug at the audience's hearts with the plight of the family of a falsely accused dead police officer. And he explores corruption, black money, poverty and the superstitious nature of Indians that creates godmen out of criminals. These godmen in turn convert politics into a cash cow.
Singham, the hard-hitting (literally) but benevolent cop allows truant young students to get away with a warning, while protecting Guruji (Anupam Kher) " his teacher and an honest politician who wants to bring change to society " from a conniving Baba (Amole Gupte), while being romanced by a ditzy beauty stylist Avni (Kareena Kapoor). He is also idolised by his fellow policemen " even seniors " and creates a small mutiny in the police force. He takes it upon himself to clear the name of his fallen colleague.
The first half of the film is engaging and tightly edited with a fairly fast-moving story. Shetty puts together a convincing film despite a predictable story of godmen and corrupt politicians which has been seen in Indian cinema over and over again (and probably in better stories) and a plot that unravels a little after the interval. At one point when you think the film is over, it drags on for another 20 minutes. Scenes, such as the one where Guruji's proteges come to hit out at a corrupt politician when he tries to force them to withdraw their applications, or when a large number of the Mumbai police force follow their leader Singham in undershirts to the Baba's mansion, are memorable.
The action is there, but is not so violent, and you don't feel overwhelmed. The language is clean with punchy one-liners from various characters, written by Sajid-Farhad, and makes the film watchable with family. The music however fails to please even though the title theme is the same from Singham, but the lilting notes of Sajde Kiye Hai from the earlier film were missing.
Devgn proves once again he can be good actor given the right script and direction and he simply carries forward his role from the 2011 hit. Gupte seemed to be thoroughly enjoying himself playing the Baba. But Kher's role is pretty ordinary and which he would have probably dealt with easily. The cast is suitably supported by Zakir Hussain, who is currently seen on TV in Yudh and CID's very own Dayashanker. Kapoor, however, hams her way through the film, raising a few laughs (more at herself than the character) through the film, especially in the scene where she beats up a mangy TV reporter who sensationalizes their (Singham and Avni) departure from the city as absconding.
Despite it all Devgn and Shetty should be able to score decently at the box office. Don't forget this is a film and not real life and don't question the sequence of events that take place if you want to enjoy it.
Out now

Ajay Devgn starrer is everything you can expect from a Rohit Shetty film
Singham Returns releases tomorrow all over the world. The Ajay Devgn-Kareena Kapoor Khan film had raised a lot of hopes from the audiences. Our reviewer Subramanian Harikumar is presently watching the film and here is what he has to say of the film:

The story revolves around a no nonsense cop Bajirao Singham, who is engrossed in a battle with corrupt politician and a fake godman played by Amole Gupte. When Guruji, played by Anupam Kher, decides to give election tickets to young deserving candidates, the evil baba and the corrupt politicians hatch a plot and kill the party leader Guruji. Will Singham find the culprits and punish them, forms the rest of the story.

Ajay Devgn shines as a straight jacketed cop, delivering dialogues and punches with panache. Kareena Kapoor Khan has nothing much to do other than playing eye candy. The romantic track in the film between Ajay and Kareena stands aloof from the main plot, providing little comic relief. Amole Gupte has given an earnest performance but his over enunciation of dialogues is tad irritating. the action is hardcore managing to engage the viewers with its intensity. Lets see what the second half has in store.

Singham Returns Hit or Flop: Box Office Prediction

Singham was not only the most successful and loved film of 2011, but also one of the most entertaining masala' films of the decade. Due to its tremendous repeat-value and mass-appeal, the film was a huge success on television.

This year, Rohit Shetty, one of the most successful commercial directors in the country, returns to direct the sequel of Singham' after directing hugely successful films like Bol Bachchan' and Chennai Express'. Unlike Singham, the sequel is a original script written by Sajid-Wajid, Rohit is credited for the story and Yunus Sajawal for the screenplay.

The expectations are high and so is the hype which should ensure that Singham Returns' takes a flying start at the box office tomorrow due to its tremendous recall value, holiday release, director Shetty and the presence of Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor.

Singham Returns is releasing on approx 3600+ screens and the advance booking especially at single-screens has been very good. Advance booking at multiplexes is way lower than Kick, but that is the case with almost every film that doesn't feature the Top 5 actors in the industry.

We expect Singham Returns to collect somewhere between  22-24 crore on its opening day, with Mumbai circuit and surrounding areas fetching the best start. The drop on Saturday and how well it holds on Monday would decide its fate at the box office.

Singham Returns has fetched a good price, so recovery won't be easy if the word-of-mouth ranges from mixed to negative.

Below is our box office prediction for the film.

IF VERY GOOD (positive word-of-mouth)

  • Day 1 - 24 cr
  • Day 2 - 15 cr
  • Day 3 - 21 cr (Sunday)
  • Weekend - 60 cr
  • First Week - 90 cr
  • Final - 145 cr+ (Super Hit / Blockbuster)

IF AVERAGE (mixed response)

  • Day 1 - 23 cr
  • Day 2 - 14 cr
  • Day 3 - 18 cr (Sunday)
  • Weekend - 55 cr
  • First Week - 80 cr
  • Final - 120 cr (Semi Hit / HIT)

IF BAD (worst case scenario)

  • Day 1 - 22 cr
  • Day 2 - 13 cr
  • Day 3 - 15 cr (Sunday)
  • Weekend - 50 cr
  • First Week - 70 cr
  • Final - less than 85 cr (Flop)

Due to the tremendous recall value of Singham a fantastic start is guaranteed - both the opening day records of Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor are likely to be shattered. What remains to be seen is, if the film will be Ajay Devgn's highest grosser to date. Because that's how much it would need to collect for the film to be a decent success at the domestic box office.

  • The movie is scheduled for release Friday.

ALLAHABAD: The Allahabad High Court dismissed a Public Interest Litigation seeking a ban on the release of Ajay Devgan-starrer "Singham Returns" after a submission by movie's co-producer that alleged objectionable dialogues have been removed.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Deshmukh and Justice Dilip Gupta dismissed the PIL filed by advocate Sushil Kumar Mishra, holding the petition had become "infructuous".

The advocate in the petition had taken exception to a dialogue in the movie, scheduled for release Friday, where Devgan has been reportedly shown saying to a godman "main tera do kaudi ka pravachan sunne nahin aaya hoon" (I have not come to listen to your two-penny half-penny sermon).

The petitioner alleged the sequence could offend  sentiments of a particular community.

However, on the very first day of hearing on the PIL today, an affidavit was filed by the movie's co-producer, Reliance Entertainment, stating the expressions "do kaudi ka" and "pravachan" had been replaced with "faltu" and "bhashan" respectively.
