In fact, Fatima Souza de Oliveira, a 60-year-old high school Portuguese teacher, said she saw the stragglers as an homage to the Brazilian way of life.

'I think it's our relaxed attitude, our beaches and the warmth of the climate and the people that enchanted them,' she said. 'Everyone who came for the Cup loved it and they all probably wanted to stay.'

The Argentines are not the only World Cup fans intent on remaining in Brazil.

Last week, police in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul said several hundred fans from the West African nation of Ghana applied for asylum after coming in on tourist visas to follow their national team. Brazil is studying the applications.

It could prove much more difficult to control the Argentines, without any visa requirements.

Following their eviction from the Sambadrome, Pontoni and 10 or so of his compatriots moved to a nearby park, where they lounged on the grass with their oversized backpacks.

They knotted friendship bracelets and prepared other handicrafts to hawk on the beach.

'I don't think I'm going back,' said 25-year-old Martin Sichero, a friend of Pontoni. 'I came for the World Cup, but now I think I'm here for good.'

Alejandro Sabella has resigned from his post as manager of Argentina following the extra-time defeat to Germany.

Sabella, who guided Argentina to the final, leaves after three years in charge in which he engineered a first place finish in the South American World Cup qualifiers and a silver medal at the World Cup finals.

The fifty-nine-year-old hinted at an exit two weeks ago, when he said: "You have to fill the energy tank which sometimes gets empty. I have to think if I'm in condition to give 100 per cent".

Jose Pekerman, the Colombia manager, and Gerardo Martino, the former Barcelona manager, are thought to be among the front-runners for the job.

Any prospective new manager will begin preparations for the 2015 Copa America with a friendly against World Cup winners Germany on 3 September

A Spanish court will push ahead with the process of prosecuting Argentina and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi for alleged tax evasion despite a recommendation from the public prosecutor the charges be dismissed.

The prosecutor argued in June that Messi's father Jorge was responsible for the family's finances and not the four-times World Player of the Year.

However, the court in Barcelona has decided that Lionel Messi could have known about and approved the creation of a web of shell companies that were allegedly used to evade taxes due on income from image rights.

The judge in the case ruled that the case against both Messis should continue, according to a statement published on Monday.

Messi and his father were accused last year of defrauding the Spanish state of more than 3million by filing false returns for the years 2006 to 2009. They have denied wrongdoing.

One of the world's highest-paid athletes, Messi earns just over 31million a season in salary and bonuses, according to Forbes magazine, as well as about 18million from sponsors.

The magazine has him as the fourth top-earning athlete behind boxer Floyd Mayweather, Real Madrid footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and basketball player LeBron James.
