Thanks for making this thread Minaxi.

Kurukshetra has a holy significance in Hinduism. While describing the importance of tirthas to Yudi (in Varna Parva) here is how Kurukshetra is described:

Pulastya said, O Indra among kings! One should then go to the applauded Kurukshetra. All those who go there are freed from all their sins. He who always says, "I will go to Kurukshetra, I will live in Kurukshetra," is freed from sins.  O Yudhishthira!  Even if one only wishes to go to Kurukshetra in one's mind, all one's sins are destroyed and one goes to Brahma's world. O extender of the Kuru lineage! He who goes to Kurukshetra with devotion, obtains the fruits of a royal sacrifice and a horse sacrifice. O king!

When was Sweta slain?

And, Shalya killing Uttar was the highlight of the 1st Day. Also, there was a gadayudha between Bhima and Dushashan on the 1st Day.

King Kuru was the founder of this land named Kurukshetra who practiced extreme penance to make it righteous. The king used the gold of his chariot to make a plough and borrowed lord Shiva's cow and Yama's buffalo to start his cultivation. He was cultivating eight-fold virtues namely tapa, truth, forgiveness, kindness, purity, charity, yoga and brahmacharya when lord Indra came and questioned his act. On being answered, Indra laughed and went away. Thereafter Narayana approached the king and questioned the same to get an identical reply. Narayana asked him to hand over the seeds and he would sow them, Kuru offered his entire body. This act pleased Narayana and he blessed the king. Indra too appeared and asked Kuru to seek boon. Kuru asked two boons:
1. This land would remain holy forever, named after himself.
2. Anyone dying here may attain freedom from the cycles of birth and death irrespective of his sins.
