The Winter Olympics are a major sporting event, similar to the popular Summer Olympics, which occurs once every four years. The first Winter Olympics was held in Charmonix, France, in the year 1924 and followed a four year patter until 1936, post which it had to be halted due to the World War II. They resumed in 1948 and were held every four years, coinciding with the Summer Olympics. However, the International Olympic Committee came to a decision in the year 1986 to place the Summer and Winter Olympics in different 4 year cycles in even numbered years.

Quite like its name suggests, the Winter Olympics' games are winter sports, such as ice-hockey, free-style skiing, luge etc. The first game held in 1924 only had alpine, cross country skiing, figure skating, ice-hockey, Nordic combined, ski jumping and speed skating as its official games. As time has passed, many other games have been added to the official list of games such as luge, style skating, snowboarding, etc; while games such as bandy and skiijoring are categorised as demonstration sports.

The Winter Olympics have been hosted in 3 continents, but never in the Southern Hemisphere. The United States of America has hosted the games 4 times, and France has hosted in 3 times. The last Winter Olympics in the year 2010 was hosted by Vancouver, Canada; and the entire event was a huge success. This year's Winter Olympics will be held in the Russian city of Sochi, which is the first time the games will be held in a Russian city.

The 22nd Winter Olympics 2014 will be held in Sochi, Russia. This is the first time that the games are being held in a Russian city after the breakup of the Russian Federation in 1991; as Moscow hosted the Winter Olympics back in 1980. While most of the games will be held in Sochi, some of the games will also be held in the resort settlement of Krasnaya Polyana.

There will be a total of 98 events from 15 disciplines during the games. Quite a few games have been added, including mixed-team figure skating, mixed-team luge and half-pipe skiing, amongst others. While originally budgeted at USD 12B, various factors prompted the budget to blow up to a whopping USD 51B, making this the most expensive Olympic games till date.

Opting for a rather simplistic and futuristic design, the emblem for this time's Winter Olympic Games has the lettering for "Sochi" and "2014" designed to mirror each other vertically. This is to symbolise the  contrasts in Russia's landscape, especially that of Sochi. Unfortunately, this emblem faced a lot of flak and criticism, especially from Russian bloggers, who felt that the design was way too simple and lacked any actual symbolism.

The mascot for the Winter Olympics and the Paralympic Games was declared on the 26th of February, 2011 after a general public voting was conducted within the nation. The general consensus came to agree on the following characters to be the mascots for the games.

[From right to left]: The Polar Bear [by Oleg Serdechny, Sochi], The European Hare [by Silviya Petrova, Chuvashia] and The Amur Leopard [by Vadim Pak, Nakhodka]

On the 29th of September, 2013, the Olympic torch was lit in Ancient Olympia. This began a 7 day journey across Greece and onto Russia. The torch relay then began at Moscow on the 7th of October, 2013, and will pass through a total of 83 Russian cities before finally being lit at Sochi on the day of the opening ceremony. This is the longest torch relay in Olympian history, with the Olympic torch spanning a total of 40000 miles and traversing from one end of Russia [Kaliningrad in the East] to the other end [Chukokta in the West] before finally landing at Sochi.

There will be a total of 88 nations participating during the games, which beats the previous record of 82 nations set during the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada.

The winter olympics consists of 15 variety of games and divided into 3 categories, Ice sports, Alpine, skiing and snowboard events and Nordic events.

Ice Sports

Bobsleigh
(Two-man, two woman and four-man)

Its a sport which teams of two or four make timed runs down narrow, twisting, banked, iced tracks in a gravity powered sled. The timed runs are combined to calculate the final score. It has been on the winter games since 1924 but only back in 2002, womans events were added.

Figure Skating

(Men's singles, ladies' singles, pairs, team and ice dancing)

Its a sport in which individuals, pairs, or groups perform spins, jumps, footwork and other intricate and challenging moves on ice skates. It has been on the program of all winter olympic games.

Ice hockey

Ice hockey is a fast paced team sport placed on ice, requiring good levels of skill, speed, agility and endurance where skaters use sticks to shoot a hard rubber hockey puck into their opponent's net to score points. It was added into the wintergames programme since first winter games and womans hockey events were added in 1998.

Luge

Luge was added to the Olympics games in 1964. Here the competitors race down a specially designed track feet first only inches from the ice. Luge is billed as the fastest sport on ice.

Short track speed skating
(500m, 1,000m, 1,500 m and relays)

Short track speed skating is held on an oval ice track (circumference of 111.12 m). This unusual distance comes about as the rink area is the same size as an international-sized hockey rink (60 m by 30 m). It was first added in 1948 as a trial but only in 2002, it was added as event for winter games.

Skeleton

This extreme sport requires individuals to ride a small sled down a frozen track while lying face down and forward facing. Skeleton is a head-first version of the luge and is run on the same track(bobsleigh). Amazingly, the skeleton sled has no steering or braking mechanism, the participants steer by movements of the body and travel at speeds up to 130 km/hr (80 mph).

Speed skating

The speed skating events are held on a 400 m oval on ice. The races are held as time trials with skaters starting in pairs. The skaters perform one inner curve and one outer curve on each lap, changing over on the back straight.

Alpine, skiing and snowboard events

Alpine

(Downhill, super G, giant slalom, slalom, super combined).

The aim of all events is for the skier get down the mountain in the shortest possible time. There is no judging involved and races are timed in hundredths of a second. There are two 'technical' events(the slalom and the giant slalom), and two 'speed' events (the downhill and super-G) and one combined event, of a slalom and downhill run, where  the winner is the skier with the fastest aggregate time.

Freestyle skiing
(Aerials, moguls, ski cross, ski halfpipe and ski slopestyle).

Freestyle skiing is a type of skiing where skiers do tricks or jumps. From skiing on halfpipes to getting air and soaring over jumps (and then doing tricks in the air), freestyle skiers also ski moguls. While skiing down close set moguls, freestyle skiers race through moguls and then ski over a jump.

Snowboard

(Parallel giant slalom, halfpipe and snowboard cross and slopestyle)

Its a winter sport that involves descending a slope that is covered with snow while standing on a board attached to a rider's feet, using a special boot set into a mounted binding.

Nordic Events

Biathlon
(combining cross-country skiing and target shooting, individual, sprint, pursuit, mass start & relay events.)

The cross country skiing component covers a distance of 7 to 20km depending which event of the biathlon contest.

In the shooting component, .22 calibre rifles are used at a range of 50 meters. At each stop, competitors have five bullets and five targets to hit. Each miss in the sprint, pursuit, and relay events results in a 150-m penalty loop. Each miss in the individual event adds one minute to the athlete's final time.

Cross country skiing
(individual and team sprint, freestyle, pursuit, classical and relays).

In classical cross-country skiing technique, athletes use a diagonal stride in which both skis stay parallel to each other. In freestyle, which is generally faster, the athlete pushes the inside edge of the ski simultaneously backward and outward at about a 45-degree angle, similar to the motions of ice skating.

Nordic combined
(ski jumping and cross country skiing)

Ski jumping is held first, followed by the cross country skiing race. The cross country race is currently held as a pursuit race, meaning that the competitors start at different intervals, and the winner of the combined event is the first to cross the finish line.

Ski jumping

Its a competition where the skiers go down a take-off ramp, jump and attempt to land as far as possible down the hill below. In addition to the length of the jump, judges give points for style.

The last Winter Olympics was held in Vancouver, Canada. This was the third time Canada had played host to the Olympics. The first time was the  1976 Summer Olympics held in Montreal. This was followed by the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. The 2010 games resulted in Vancouver becoming the most populous city to ever host the Winter Olympics. While most game venues were set in Vancouver, some were also in Whistler.

The Vancouver 2010 logo initially ran into controversy due to questions posed by the First Nations and Inuits. The "Inuksuk" is a stone landmark build by humans. This is used specifically by the Inuit, Inupiat, and other of the Arctic region. It is believed that the Inuksuk is used for navigation, a point of reference, camps, or even hunting grounds. However, people believe that the use of it in the logo pays tribute to the Inuksuk that is constructed at English Bay in Vancouver.

It is believed that approximately 2 600 athletes from about 82 nations participated in Vancouver games. The list of sports included Alpine skiing, Biathlon, Curling, Freestyle skiing, Ice hockey, Speed Skating, Ski Jumping, etc.  The Olympic Torch was lit in Olympia on October 22, 2009, and it traveled from Greece, to the North Pole, Canada's High Arctic, and finally to Vancouver. The official Olympic opening ceremony was commemorated by the Governor General, the Prime Minister and the International Olympic Committee president.

The mascots for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics were [Left to Right] Miga (the mythical sea bear)Quatchi (the sasquatch), Sumi (the animal guardian spirit), and Mukmuk (the Vancouver Island marmot).

The Winter 2010 Olympics witnessed many old records being broken, and new ones created. This was the first time Canada managed to win gold in an Olympics hosted on home ground. Furthermore, Canada also broke the record for the most gold medals won at a single Winter games. They won 14, while the previous record was 13 gold medals set by the former Soviet Union in 1976 and Norway in 2002. Also, the United States won 37 medals in total, beating Germany's record of having the won the most medals in a single Winter Olympic event back in 2002. This was also the second time the United States had won the most number of medals at the Winter Olympics.

Finally, the games ended on February 28th, 2010. After having run a successful Winter Olympics, Vancouver finally passed the Olympic Flag to Sochi for it's games in 2014.

Way back in 1980, the US Hockey team first beat the Soviet Union, and then Finland to win the gold medal !

In the Nagano Olympics, the ski jumper, Masahiko Harada, flew 137 metres and secured gold for the Japanese team!

Speed-skater Bonnie Blair is one of the most successful Olympic athletes of all time. She claimed six medals in two events during the 1988 games, which set a world record for her debut. Later on she went on to claim four more gold medals; two in 1992, and two in 1994.

In the 1980 games, Eric Heiden won 5 gold medals at all individual events !

After a major accident that may have ended his career, the downhill skier Herman Maier got right back up on his feet. Days later he won gold in giant slalom and the super giant slalom. This success story is one that inspires many !
