Sushant Singh Rajput and Dibakar Banerjee to host a midnight screening

Wednesday, 1 April 2015 - 6:30am IST | Place: Mumbai | Agency: dna | From the print edition

With innovation in marketing becoming an important aspect of filmmaking, every film is going the extra mile to ensure their project recieves the maximum attention. Since the very beginning the makers of Detective Byomkesh Bakshy have managed to keep the mystery quotient around the film high. From keeping the intrigue of the villain to the curious mind of Byomkesh Bakshy, everything has been kept under wraps. As the release date is nearing, the team has decided to keep a special midnight screening of the film for their friends and family. This brilliant idea came from none other than Aditya Chopra and everyone immediately agreed to the same. Both Dibakar and Sushant will be personally inviting people to be part of their mystery ride. Most of their friends from the industry would be present for the screening that would start at the stroke of midnight.

INDIE ARTISTS HIJACK BOLLYWOOD FILM

Period Film Raided By Contemporary Sounds

CAN RIFFS AND WOBBLES COEXIST WITH KHANJARS AND DHOTIS?

Who would have thought that the inclusion of Joint Family's Life's a Bitch' in the teaser for Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!was only an act of foreshadowing? Could we have predicted Dibakar Banerjee's decision to hand over soundtrack duties to six indie artists with limited soundtrack experience? Why is he enlisting artists with distinctly contemporary sounds to provide music for a film based in the 1940s? Is there a greater scheme at work or has he just been smoking something particularly potent?

"WHAT I LIKE IN MUSIC IS AN INTENSITY AND CLARITY OF IDEA"

Dibakar Banerjee Talks About His Approach To Music

To make a period film, you have to reconstruct a reality that no longer exists. This entails conducting a deep study of all the constituents of that reality " from the clothes people wore and the cars they drove to the typography associated with the era. Having a background score drawn directly from the music associated with the time period is considered a pre-requisite, but the soundtrack of Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! is somewhat of an anomaly.

We met Dibakar Banerjee at his Lalbaug office to talk about the thought process behind the soundtrack. We were told that he hadn't slept in 36 hours. However, his demeanor didn't betray the slightest bit of fatigue. He answers were animated, descriptive and hinted at a deep-seated fascination with underground music. "My idea was to take songs that were conceived without any knowledge of the film," he said. "That's when you get that real electric spark."

"The moment you do something for something, you lose that magic of two entirely different contexts making one new context," he said. While filming, several crew members observed his tendency to shout "It's too dancey, let's reduce it!" When asked about this, he said, "I only say it in context of what's needed. What I like in music is an intensity and clarity of idea. Good music cannot be this and that. Good music usually is just this or that."

'CHARAS KA TOLA' CAUSES UPROAR

When Madboy/Mink rewrote All Ball standout 'Taste Your Kiss' for the film, little did they know that the opening lyric would offend the fragile sensibilities of the authorities. The film version, titled 'Calcutta Kiss', was supposed to be rolled out on February 3 at an event honouring the Howrah Bridge. But the authorities dropped the banhammer on it as soon as they heard the line "Woh saala bola / Yeh le charas ka tola", forcing the duo to change the lyrics for the duration of the event.

SURYAKANT SAWHNEY ENRAGED

Peter Cat Recording Co. frontman Suryakant Sawhney wasn't against the idea of writing a Hindi version of Sinema opener 'Pariquel' for the film. However, he started making panicked phonecalls as soon as he found that the title was being changed to 'Jaanam'. He demanded that the original title be retained, but eventually gave up after an hour-long arguement with the producers.

BLEK TRACK MARRIES THUMRI

Fan Favorite 'Fog + Strobe' Falls For Classical Motif

In what's perhaps the strangest coupling that Indian indie music has seen till date, a centuries old Thumri became one with Blek's 'Fog + Strobe'. How did that happen? "Dibakar called us up and said he liked the song and wanted to use it in a film," says frontman Rishi Bradoo. "We asked him how he's going to use it. He showed us this scene and asked us to make a remixed version of the song. While messing around with it, he sang this Thumri. It just fit. We decided to use it as the chorus." Although certain sonic changes were made to the song, the band didn't have to change any of the lyrics. "The song is about youthful playfulness and recklessness when it comes to love. The Thumri is also on the same lines. That's what made it such a perfect fit."

IJA SONICALLY CONJURE MONSTER

Experimental Electronic Act Make Their Own Private Frankenstein

Ija's sonic representation of the film's resident bad guy, 'Yang Guang Lives', went through so many iterations and took so long to make that Ashhar Farooqui felt like he was working on two tracks as opposed to one. While a major portion of the song came together smoothly, the climax took an inordinately long time to fall into place. Unlike the other musicians which were presenting reiterations of existing tracks or writing new ones with little knowledge of the film's plot, Ashhar was working to a dramatic brief. He was given the backstory of the character " how he became the monster that he is in the film and what his relationship with Byomkesh is " and asked to interpret it musically. The result is nothing less than diabolical.

TITLE TRACK SAVED FROM STERILIZATION

Objections were raised at the chorus of the title track, which Dibakar co-wrote with Sneha Khanwalkar. The line "Bach ke Bakshy / Tu jhootha hai makkar" didn't go down well with some people. What self-respecting Bollywood film would call its own hero a liar and a trickster? It went to the point where a tamer alternative, "Bach ke Bakshy / Tu natkhat hai naadan", was suggested. But Dibakar stood his ground and the original lyrics were retained.

WHAT THE f**k IS AN 'ANDOVA.CHIKN'?

Before it was rechristened for the film, mode.AKA's 'Chase in Chinatown' was called 'Andova.Chikn'. We've managed to decipher the true meaning of our share of strange titles, but we're left with no choice but to admit defeat in the case of this one. We promise a handsome reward to anyone who can explain what the f**k it means.
