Anime

Japanese word for cartoon and animation. In Japan, "anime" refers to any and all animation or cartoon - regardless of the genre, style, or nation of origin. Outside of Japan the word "anime" has come to refer specifically to animation of Japanese origins, or animation of a particular style (see below). Because of this, it is pronounced the Japanese way: "a-nee-may".

While it is clear that the word anime derives from a western term, there is some debate as to its exact origin. One very common interpretation is that it comes from the French term for cartoon, "dessin anim", which translates literally to "animated drawing". However, others believe it's simply a contraction of the word "animation" as pronounced in English.

While the French origin is perhaps the most widely spread theory, it may simply be a myth related to the popularity of anime in France in the late 70s and the 80s which was so spectacular it even led to some French-Japanese co-productions. But animation in Japan has existed for longer than that, and the full word for animation there is (animeshon) which follows the English pronunciation, not the French one. Combined with the fact that Japanese have a habit of incorporating English words into their language much more often than other western languages, this makes a strong case that "anime" is actually the short form of the Japanization of the English word "animation."

There is much controversy as to whether or not the label "anime" can be extended to non-Japanese animation that looks
like Japanese animation. Whether or not the label can be extended to non-Japanese animation depends largely on the technical definition of "anime" that one choses to accept:

Defined by origin: Defining "anime" as animation produced in Japan allows for a fairly black and white application of the label. The only gray area occurs with co-productions that may have had a portion of their animation, and/or scripting produced outside of Japan.

Defined by style: Defining "anime" as a style of animation that originated in Japan is much more complicated, however this definition would allow animation produced outside of Japan, but conforming to the defined "style" to be called "anime." It is difficult to determine if this "style" should be determined solely on drawing style (ie: Big eyes, small mouth, pointy hair), if it should include editing techniques (Japanese animation typically makes more use of "cuts" and "camera angles" than most non Japanese animation), and whether the narrative or storytelling style should be included in the definition. Perhaps the biggest pitfall of this definition is that, due to the wide variety of Japanese animation, regardless of any style based definition, there will always be Japanese animation that would not fit the definition, creating a scenario where some Japanese animation would not be anime.

The most popular titles are determined with a simple summation of all votes. Titles with many votes will tend to be at the top, but this is modified a little by the ratings. In other words, the popularity is the straight average score of a title (the value in the rating column) multiplied by the number of votes.

Downloading VS Streaming Anime

courtsey: Dao's subarashii blog

Downloading
- Downloading anime can be done in many ways. You can grab it off torrent index sites like Nyaa and TokyoToshokan or you can download them off DDL which are usually shared by Anime Download sites like Animetake. DDL's are usually files from their original torrent's just reuploaded into the filehost for people who can't or won't use torrents for whatever reason.
- Releases are usually released by the fansubbers themselves. When you download those releases it supports the fansubbers and shows them how much you appreciate the work they put in to the releases.
- Downloaded anime via official fansubbing groups usually come in the best quality available (HDTV) along with proper encoding done.
- You can archive the downloaded files for future use in whatever scenario that maybe such as when you get a internet outage you can always just watch the stuff you have downloaded whereas to streaming, you actually need internet to watch the stream.
- 1080p Blu-ray releases are available and are definitely eye candy and something every anime lover should once experience. Streaming sites will usually NEVER stream blu-ray stuff in full quality.
- If you have slow download speed you can always leave the download on overnight or while you're doing something else.
- When watching a downloaded file you can pause anytime you want, you can take easy screenshots with the MPC player, you can skip to and rewind easily without any lag or other disturbance.
- If for some reason you have to leav
e during the middle of an episode you can just close it and come back later to re-open the file and easily skip to the part where you left off without any fuss.

Streaming
- Generally streaming sites use streaming software or streaming hosts that contain any advertisements and annoying disturbances while watching. These advertisements support the streaming sites themselves and give no credit whatsoever to the people who worked on those releases.
- The quality of the streams are usually reduced to utter garbage. The reason for this is because streaming sites like to take official releases, chop the quality up to reduce the filesize and then upload them to the streaming software or host they use. This saves them time for uploading and also makes loading the stream faster.
- If you have slow downloading speed you often run into lag and freezing troubles while streaming. Sometimes the entire stream can freeze and you end up have to re-loading it again.
- If you like a certain scene of the show it's hard to take a screen shot of it since there's usually no function on the stream itself to do that for you.
- If your browser crashes during the middle of the stream or for whatever reason you need to leave or close your computer, you'll have to re-load the video all over again.
