Chapter 6
"I can't believe he's finally getting engaged, and soon he'd be married! But our poor luck, he didn't even look at us, how I had wished to marry him myself," a girl was saying to her friend, while looking at the couple in front of them.
They had been neighbors to that man since a long time now, but he had never even looked at them.
"But koi problem nahin hain nah," the other girl said and pointed towards the other brother coming down, "We might try our chance on him!" and both giggled.
Little did that man realize that he was the object of talks of some ladies, nor did he realize that he was seen as marriage material in people's eyes. His eyes were only on the couple in front of him. From afar, he could see the happiness in the new couple's face. He still couldn't believe when this morning he got a call, and they actually sprang this surprise on him. He had happily come to share the happiness of this couple. On his way, he had stopped near a temple and had prayed for this couple's well-being.
One tear formed at the corner of his eyes, but before anyone could see it, he immediately wiped it and made way to stand to in front of the new couple.
But before he could even say anything, the other man turned towards him and hugged him. It seemed words were not really needed, and after wishing them all the best and happiness in this world, he also started to participate in their joy.
Soon all were having fun, everywhere people were laughing and even he had found a sweet young girl, and was dancing with her.
Finally it was already late at night, when everyone started to go away, except the new engaged couple and her mother. He stood all alone with his back to the happy family. He was staring at the stars above in the dark sky. He raised his hand, as if trying to grasp a few of them in his hold, but it was all wishful thinking of his part. He couldn't reach them, nor hold onto them. Sometimes a few things were completely out of our reach. He turned back, to look at the new couple. Today they had gotten engaged, and as from what the priest said, the wedding was scheduled in five months now.
He didn't believe in such things, but his mum did, so they all had to abide, though he could see that the couple wanted to get married as soon as possible. He chuckled when he had seen their disappointment one hour earlier, when the priest had announced that only after five months, there was an auspicious date.
He walked towards them, it was time to bid goodbye now. He had to return back to his job now. He was just a few meters away from them, when his mobile started to ring. He would have ignored it, but then thinking it was maybe from his job, he took out the mobile from the pocket of his trousers and when he saw the name flashing on his screen, a deep sense of fear gripped him.
Some hours earlier
Staff Anita summoned up a soothing smile, bending-down. "Hello there. There's nothing to worry about. You're in hospital, you were involved in an accident, but you're going to be fine now, just fine."
But then she saw the eyelids starting to close and she urgently caught hold of her hand. "Please...don't go back to sleep. Stay awake. How do you feel? Anything I can get you?"
She saw the patient licking her lips, and asked, "Thirsty? Would you like some water?'
But she could see that none of her words were having any effect on the patient. The patient was almost like a lost kid. Anita saw the patient holding her hand slowly to her head and then looking straight at her after a few minutes. The patient didn't need to ask any questions, Anita as if reading the question from her face, replied gently with a smile, 'I'm Staff Nurse Anita. I've been looking after you since you came here; we're old friends."
She saw confusion in the eyes of her patient, and the sudden paleness of the face.
Staff Nurse Anita's first exultant happiness in seeing her patient's eyes open began to dissolve into anxiety. Had irreparable brain damage been done? She had grown fond of her patient, and that was a mistake, she ruefully acknowledged to herself. It was unprofessional to get emotionally involved with a patient, that was one of the first lessons you learnt when you entered nursing, yet she hadnt been able to help it. She liked people, that was why she had become a nurse in the first place, and, although she knew the score where a coma victim was concerned, she knew that some people did recover completely, and she had been hoping against hope that this patient would be one of those who made it back to life without lasting consequence.
Anita saw her patient opening her mouth to say something, but before she could utter anything, the doctors had rushed inside of the room. After giving a brief detail of everything which happened, Anita considered it better to go out.
In her happiness, she completely forgot to make that call, and waited outside of the door, while all the specialists were inside.
She was walking to and fro, when she saw the doctors coming out. They looked genuinely happy, and upon going away, they congratulated her on her job. They said it was all due to her dedication and patience that her patient was out of coma. She blushed under so much of flattery, and murmured a simple thanks. Afterwards she rushed back in the room, but her patient was sleeping now. She went close, and removed a few loose strands from the patient's face, and then with a smile went out. She was humming a song, when she had realized that she had completely forgotten to inform him.
She took out her mobile and dialed his number.
He didn't know why, but finding a call from her raised a kind of fear in him. What if she was calling him to give a bad news. He didn't want to take the mobile, but in the end, he had to answer.
"Hello Anita," he said, "Is everything ok?"
"Ok? Ok seems a very meek word for the miracle which happened," Anita said back, with all her joy noticeable in her voice.
"Kya hua?" he asked again, happy it wasn't a bad news at all.
"She woke up, Sakshi has just opened up her eyes," Anita shouted her happiness in the call.
"She... she woke up," he repeated after her.
Anita stared strangely at her mobile, as far as she knew him, he never stammered or was lost at words, so why was he behaving like this today.
"Yes Arjun, she woke up a few hours ago!" Anita said again.
Arjun couldn't believe this at all. Should he be happy or scared? Or was this just another type of joke of fate? He raised his eyes at the couple in front of him. Had he been too hasty in finally thinking that finally happiness had entered in their life?
"Hello, koi hain?" Anita asked when she heard no reply from Arjun's part.
Arjun belated realized that Anita was still talking on the other side of the call, "Yes, I'm here. This is very good news. Acha take care of her, I'll reach there as soon as possible!"
"You don't have to hurry, she's sleeping. Come when you can," Anita said and then bid goodbye.
Arjun put back his mobile in his trousers. He didn't know what to do now, should he tell the truth or not?
He was completely lost in his thoughts, when someone patted his shoulder.
"Dewar ji, kahan khoye huwe ho aap?" He turned to look in a pair of happy eyes. Did he have the courage to break their heart?
"Any girl problems? Or any girlfriend?" the girl teased him.
"Aisha? Why are teasing my bro?"
"Sam, tum bhi nah! He's my dewar now! I have full right on him," Aisha said with a smile.
Arjun stared at Rathore hugging Aisha in front of him. For the first time since so many months, Sam was really happy. He wondered what they will do once they knew Sakshi was back in this world with them...
