YJHD Was successful not only because of Deepika or Ranbir but major part was played by their on-offscreen chemistry. They both showed viewers that they still cared for each other and knew each other way better than anyone else - what is she like, or he like, chocolate is her favorite dessert, punjabi khanna is his, ...blah..blah...😆 People fell for that.
To top it Karan is good in promoting his movies really well.

People talking about - Aakarshan, Chandini Chowk to China, Kartik calling Kartik should not forget that Deepika was praised in all these movies and had substantial role in the movies. Also, Ranbir had Rocket Singh, wake up Sid, Besharam and all to his credit like another normal actors or actresses.

No. I think we give way too much credit to the actors in the movie.

There is no star that is bigger than the movie. YJHD worked because of the actors + concept + music + promotion.

YJHD was overhyped due to Deepika and Ranbir's verbal diarrhea about each other prior to its release. Not to mention the fact that they were exes doing a film together which hardly happens. The film , the characters and neither the performances were path-breaking.
YJHD banked more on Ranbir than it banked on Deepika for obvious reasons.. whether or not Deepika was better than Ranbir in the film is arguable. No matter how hard a certain sect of fans try taking credit away from Ranbir,, it doesn't change the fact that Ranbir has a lot to do with his films' successes.  Moreover, a lot of people go gaga over Ranbir and Deepika's onscreen chemistry..yet to still say Ranbir had nothing to do with the film is just a matter of denial.

Oh and ARK.
There were many people who watched YJHD because of Aditya post Aashiqui2.

Yes :)

Just kidding though, I really like Deepika, but I don't think any of the younger generation of actors has managed to get the kind of fan following that will watch their film no matter what. That takes time to develop.

People mistakenly assumed that RK's films mint money because he has the star power to draw in an audience. Whereas I think it is more likely that people go to watch RK's films because he has become associated with good films. Once they realize the film is not good, they have no further loyalty to the actor. Similarly with Shahid, unfortunately, he has made consistently terrible choices with his films, so people are a little wary of giving his films a chance.

Beyond that no one is questioning anyone's talent or performance, but how many people actually watch films just to appreciate somebody's efforts, the film needs to work as a whole, good acting can enhance the experience by making the characters more accessible, but if the character itself is terribly written, who cares.

That was put very well!👏

RK is not in the league of Salman and SRK...and Rajnikant...actors who don't depend on scripts and storyline and hit numbers...when they do a film, people come to see them on-screen, not the characters they play or anything else.

But they are the only exception to this rule...every other actor, including Aamir Khan, has to depend as much on a good film, as they depend on their own star power.

YJHD did well because it had everything working for it...a cast of not one, but four young, good-looking and popular stars...excellent music score, which is so essential for a rom-com, stupendous production values that only a Dharma Production can boast off...and a fairly, non-offensive and enjoyable story!

It would have worked even if it had a completely different set of actors in it...maybe, not as well as it did with Ranbir and Deepika, but it would have made money in anycase!

PS: I am of the opinion, that when the film released, people essentially went to see Ranbir...but came out impressed with Deepika! But I don't think that Deepika in anyway was the pulling factor for the film! It was basically this film that catapulted her to super-stardom!

YJHD worked coz of multiple reasons - hit music, hit music videos, hit story, Deepika-Ranbir and the mood of the film. Besharam just wasn't meant to work, from it's very onset you could sense the bad script, execution and the music, all which contributed towards its failure.

Besharam won't harm Ranbir much at all, Bollywood loves Ranbir way too much to shun him after one film. This will leave Abhinav Kashyap and Pallavi Sharda nowhere though.

Pallavi Sharda has to be one of the most lackluster new comer in the last one decade!😕

She has nil screen presence, dances worse than Sunny Deol and her acting makes Katrina Kaif look like an Oscar winner in comparison!

Terrible pairing! Worst, I have seen in a film! Nargis Fakhri was far, far better in Rockstar...if nothing else, she was beautiful enough to convince that a man would go nuts for her! But Pallavi's character in this film is so bland, that it becomes unintentionally hilarious to see RK's character reforming himself for her!😆

It's the audience which makes a film hit or flop...audience must have got value for it's money otherwise audience doesn't even care for the likes of RK the so called superstar also!
