Shakti or Divine Mother represents prakriti, responsible for creation of the world according to the religious ideology of Goddess worship.

King Daksha's daughter Uma wished to marry Lord Shiva. She worshipped him and pleased him and was successful. Uma, now the consort of Lord Shiva, wished to take part in a Yagna conducted by her father. Since her father was not in good terms with him, Lord Shiva refused her to witness the Yagna.

When she turned up at the Yagna, her father - King Daksha - insulted Lord Shiva. Unable to withstand the insult, the angry Uma decided to end her life by jumping into the agni kund. She was united with the eternity. Uma came to be known as Sati. Sati was reborn again. In the second birth, Sati married Lord Shiva and the divine couple lived happily, thereafter. It is believed that Sati comes to stay with her parents for nine days, every year. This is celebrated as Navratri.

Navaratri is separated into different sets to adore different aspects of the supreme Goddess. From day 1-3, the Goddess is invoked as the supreme powerful force called Durga to destroy vices and impurities. From day 4-6, She is worshipped as the mother of spiritual wealth, Goddess Lakshmi to bestow on her devotees inexhaustible wealth. On day 7 and 8, the Goddess is worshipped as the Goddess of wisdom, Saraswati for all round success in life. Finally on the 9th day Kanya puja is performed, nine young girls representing the nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshiped

Every day, she assumes a new character, a new look and a new duty-Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skanda Mata, Katyayani, Kalratri, Maha Gauri and Siddhidatri. To celebrate a good harvest and to propitiate the nine planets, women also plant nine different kinds of food grain seeds in small containers during these nine days and then offer the young saplings to the goddess.

During Navratri, some devotees of Durga observe a fast and prayers are offered for the protection of health and property. A period of introspection and purification, Navratri is traditionally an auspicious time for starting new ventures.

Navaratri is a nine night festival that honors the Mother Goddess in all her manifestations, including Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati. It's a festival full of worship and dance. The festival culminates with Dusherra, the victory of good over evil, on the tenth day.

EAST INDIA

According to legend, Lord Shiva pleased with Mahishasura's devotion blessed him with invincibility. The latter started killing innocent people on earth and set out to acquire the seven lokas. When The Trinity was unable to defeat him, all the gods united their supreme powers and created Ma Shakti or Durga-the Warrior Goddess.

With all the accumulated power and the weapons, Goddess Durga set on her mission to defeat Mahishasura. The war between them lasted for nine days. Goddess Durga killed Mahishasura on the tenth day. Navratri is celebrated to commemorate her victory over the demon, which symbolizes the victory of the good over the evil. The nine nights of Navratri symbolize the nine nights of the war between Goddess Durga and Mahishasura.

The East Indian state of West Bengal celebrates Navratri as Durga Puja with much pomp and glitter. Starting from the seventh day until the tenth, Kolkata looks drenched in bright and vibrant colours as Maa Durga descends from the heaven to visit her maternal home on Earth. She is received with much love and warmth and her arrival and departure are overwhelming, for she departs only to return the following year.

Beautiful and extravagant pandals are constructed and Maa Durga and her sons - Kartikeya and Ganesha - and Goddesses Lakshmi and Saraswati are sculpted in different forms much before the festive season starts. For the Gods and the Goddesses, pandals become their temporary abode and their sight mesmerises one and all. A literal visit to the capital city during Durga Puja is a must watch in one's lifetime.

SOUTH INDIA

The south indian states adds a religious touch to the celebrations by dedicating the nine special nights to Goddess Durga, Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswati. Keralites place books, musical instruments in front of Goddess Saraswati's idol on the day of Ashtami. The books are worshipped and people pray to the Goddess for granting them wisdom and knowledge. On the tenth day, the books are taken out for reading.

Batukamma Panduga is celebrated during Navratri in Andhra Pradesh, which means 'Come Alive Mother Goddess'. These nine days are dedicated to Shakti and are celebrated in a very unique way. Women prepare Batukamma which is actually a beautiful flower stack, arranged with seasonal flowers, in seven layers. After preparing their respective Batukamma's, women gather in the evening for the ritual. They place them in the centre and dance around them by singing folk songs dedicated to Goddess Shakti. Then they march towards a lake or any other water body and set afloat their Batukammas.

Tamilians display a Golu at their homes. Golu is an arrangement made on a make-shift staircase with nine stairs. Each stair symbolizes each day of Navratri. Decorative items, idols of Gods and Goddesses are placed on the stairs. In most cases, the dolls that are used for the Golu are handed over from generation to generation.

The Dusshera celebration of Mysore in southern India is a veritable extravaganza! Chamundi, a form of Durga, is the family deity of the Maharaja of Mysore. It's a wonderful scene to watch the grand procession of elephants, horses and courtiers wending a circuitous way to the hilltop temple of Goddess Chamundi!

NORTH INDIA

The tenth day of this grand festive season is called Kullu Dusshera in Himanchal Pradesh. Unlike other states, the festival begins in Himachal when it ends elsewhere. People mark this day to rejoice the return of victorious Lord Rama to Ayodhya. Huge effigies of Ravana are burnt amidst the bangs and booms of firecrackers.

Most of the people in Punjab go on a fast for the first seven days. They also organize a jagraata and on the eighth day, the fast is broken by organizing a bhandara for 9 young girls. A bhandara means a feast that includes puris and halawa chana. The girls are also gifted with a red chunri.

WEST INDIA

A clay pot symbolizes the garbha which is the source of life on earth. It is a prominent feature during Navratri celebrations in Gujarat. The folk dance form of Garbha derives its name from the iconic clay pot around which women whirl and dance. Even men play Garbha along with women. Dandiya Raas is another important attraction in Gujarat during the festive season. Sticks of equal length are used for the dance and the only difference between this form of dance with Garbha is that the sticks are used for clapping instead of hands.

For the Maharashtrians, Navratri is an auspicious time to initiate new beginnings. Women invite their female friends to their homes and gift them with a coconut, beetle leaves and beetle nuts. They put haldi and kumkum on the foreheads of the married women as a gesture of Saumangalyam (remaining the wife of her husband until her last breath).
