it's no secret that in India dark color is considered inferior, people get bullied because of their skin color and even parents mock their kids for having dark skin, forcing them to look good (fare).

That is due to ignorance. The colour of the skin is due to the melanin pigment in the skin. We all have an almost equal number of melanocytes  so why the difference in the color? The dark skin is an evolutionary as well as adaptive process. Skin colour evolved due to a battle  between two vitamins , folic acid (folate) and vitamin D. As humans shed their body hair they became more heated Sunlight destroys folate which is necessary for reproductive health. Birth defects are common in its deficiency. Darker colour of the skin protected the skin from excessive exposure to UV radiations in the tropical regions, thus preserving folate and health. However it came with a corresponding disadvantage . By keeping out sunlight it reduced the synthesis of Vit D in the body which is essential for absorbing calcium and phosphorus to make our bones strong.

Millions of years ago when  modern man migrated out of Africa into Europe where sunlight was less, the dark skinned people started to  develop  rickets due to Vit D deficiency. Rickets causes infertility as well as deformity. Natural selection would now play its part. With time, over generations  the skin grew lighter in Europe The fact that the darker skins became associated with disease (the rickets caused by the lack of vitamin D) may have started the initial misconception that white skin was superior overall.  In fact, it is superior, but only in an environment where there was less sunlight.

When another migration took place and people moved to warmer climates the skin slowly darkened again. This was an adaptive process to protect the folate levels in the body. Darker skin also helped to protect against skin cancer .

Brown skin is the most sensible' skin type nature could have created for our climate. The evolutionary process is all about propagation of the species and it doesn't care about beauty or skin cancer. Sun screen creams  offer some protection and prevents tanning  but Fairness creams are a myth. For any real change to occur in the skin it takes more than our lifetimes.

Hope this does not add to the confounding factors in sample selection of the researcher.

think question was clear if everything else same(skin tone, quality etc) then which color and people are still garbling Smile.. anyway still more color should be included.. eye and hair color.. i dont think its just skin color thats preferred, blue eyes, blonde hair is rage as well whoever wants to deny it can keep denying that for their lifetimes..

Its nothing specific to sub continent but a world-wide obsession.. remember michael jackson? all black men want to get a white girl as well and no that does not mean brown or light brown LOL.. but they do settle for brown after realizing no white girl is interested in them Tongue.. same is true for black girls..
then you move to countries like japan, hongkong, china, korea, thailand, indonesia, phillipines, thailand and singapore... well yellow skin and whatever skin color others are, are also intested in white and do almost anything under the sun to get a white guy or white girlLOL..
but then there are some poor white countries like ukraine, maldova all some more post soviet split countries which are poor and happy to go with anyone who has more money than them..LOLLOLLOL

Hush! According to the theory, only dark people find dark is beautiful. Since I'm always advocating dark is beautiful too, I got to be coal black. Any other shades you see in me, must be your color blindness. Tongue

Hmm. I find the points you bring up interesting.

My experience with the black community has been otherwise. Of course there is a lot of interracial dating. However, within the black friends and coworkers I've known - dating within the community is extremely important. A large number of them are into "chocolate love" . They would find the notion that black people want white people quite offensive. And let's not forget the saying "Once you go black, you can't go back". For many people the well endowed black male is a much more desirable attribute than the blonde blue eyed pretty boy.

Similarly amidst Asians, there is a huge dichotomy within the community. I've found that Asians will gravitate to white people for casual dating and sex. However, marriage and relationships are very exclusive with Asian people only. I've found this true amidst Chinese, Taiwanese, Hmong, Japanese and Filipino community. Especially Japan is highly xenophobic where even friendship outside ethnic Japanese is very closed and guarded. I don't know much about Korean or Thai communities.

Although I know there is rampant color favoritism within Russia and former Soviet states. There is a huge proliferation of Mongolians in the region and many are successful and wealthy businessmen. However, they are racially segregated and even poor white people don't seek people of Mongolian descent. Even worst is the fate of Caucasians. Racism against Caucasians is the worst in the region. Caucasian in these regions isn't "white" but belonging to the Caucasus region - Armenians, Georgians, Chechnyan, Turkish, North Iranian etc. Even though more white in appearance  - they are an inferior class of white. Many would consider it better off to be with racially darker South Asians or Hispanics than be with Caucasians.

There also exists the Latin lover stereotype. Of course it is a stereotype, which means it isn't true or accurate. But Latinos are often considered very sensual and desirable. People of all races and ethnicities tend to fantasize about Latin men and women. Of course there is some forms of racism it usually isn't purely color racism but more of a class racism. No one wants a poor immigrant. But if he or she is a well off settled Latin immigrant than darkness of skin doesn't matter.

Color preference often isn't a natural preference, but a lot of times something that transpires from social perceptions and structures.

lol it's very commendable of you to do this research. Ek thha Einstein aur ek hoon main. Sahi raaste jaa rahe ho. LOL

but not too fast. If you want to be successful at research, you have to think of the following:

1. all else equal, would you prefer fair. Key is all else equal. Same features, same body etc. Cant be changing variables mid-way. Notice how many qualifiers people use as soon as they say they can like dark. If someone is like so and so, then... Wohi toh. It's qualified.

2. here's the other point- even dark can prefer dark. If they think they cant handle fair. It's like the ugly chick training herself subconsciously to only like the ugly guy knowing she'll never get anyone better.LOL

3. and last but most important, the question has to be- if you could be born fair (in case you are dark), all else equal, would you have wanted that? But then, how can someone dark admit thatLOL

Even Michael Jackson tried to get white, case in point.Wink

and sample size, which is very limited here in any case, is not the only thing. You got to also look for sample bias. And when it comes to asking questions in public, people have a lot of reasons for the nice answers they give.  You got to take those with a grain of saltWinkLOL

ps- personally, i think i can handle a range: brown to fair. That allows more selection possibilitiesLOL

lol this is great. We finally know what mongolians and hmongs want. Wanted to know about them as bad as people wanting to know the DARK secrets of the universe. LOL And we know the DNA sequencing that goes into skin color. At this rate, maybe we can have someone enlighten us with what cats and mice want? I know the lion likes other animals, especially for food, but how about the other critters? The birds and the bees? Who do they dig?LOL

and when they are done with the anthropological and zoological findings, could they just answer the three simple questions at the start, keeping 'all else equal". No? OKLOL

ps- who is hmong? Or is that what?LOL
