Acting is a powerful profession: Sushant Singh Rajput

Mumbai, Sep 6 (IANS) He is just two films old, but actor Sushant Singh Rajput says he has already realised the power of cinema, and how it impacts the lives of people.

The 27-year-old, whose second movie "Shuddh Desi Romance" released Friday, says his source of inspiration is Bollywood badshah Shah Rukh Khan.

"I told Shah Rukh when I met him that I'm an actor because of him," Sushant said in a statement.

"When I used to watch his films earlier, I used to feel that acting as a profession is so powerful, you can convince people of something which you're not. Or maybe it's so larger than life and you can hide behind all these interesting and exciting characters. But I didn't take acting seriously then," he added.

Sushant, who made his Bollywood debut with "Kai Po Che!", made the confession on UTV Stars' show "Breakfast To Dinner". The episode featuring Sushant will air Sunday.

Shuddh Desi Romance redefines Bollywood love triangle and rom-com

Ladies and gentlemen, the love triangle and rom-com a la Bollywood has been redefined: Shuddh Desi Romance is a classic and one of the best dissections of a relationship that has ever come out of the Hindi film industry. Audiences failed writer Jaideep Sahni in 2009 when they didn't flock to theatres to watch his utterly brilliant Rocket Singh, but he's brushed away that film's failure and come back even stronger. Shuddh Desi Romance appeals not only to college kids or married couples or the arty' crowd, but to anyone and everyone. It's competent, challenging, bright, delectably-relatable and heartfelt and hopefully, it signals the beginning of a major shift in the industry and the audiences' taste in mainstream feel-good Hindi cinema. Courtesy: Facebook Courtesy: Facebook Director Maneesh Sharma and writer Sahni have crafted an entertainer that defies every beat of a traditional desi rom-com, and they've done it with such expertise and sincerity. By ignoring the Bollywood rulebook and not bothering about any particular audience demographic, the duo have created a light-footed and sassy film that remains true to its characters. And what sharply drawn characters these are - he's indecisive, she's needy, then he becomes needy, she becomes indecisive; they hurt each other, but they love each other, yet they gradually get on each other's nerves. And as they go through all this, we get to watch. This is a delight. We have all been in this sort of a relationship, and that makes the protagonists as recognisable and weirdly warped as a look in the mirror every morning. Sharma and Sahni's sophisticated and incisive style of storytelling establishes the conflict between the three characters by not relying on dramatic screaming matches, but on stinging black comedy. This is not an easy feat to pull off in the deranged circus that is Bollywood. Sushant Singh Rajput, Parineeti Chopra and newcomer Vaani Kapoor understand this and are absolutely terrific in their complicated roles. Their awesome chemistry is complimented by the way they completely swallow the oblique dynamics between their characters. It's gratifying to see new Bollywood actors and actresses take on an edgy, bold story with panache and deliver a new age edgy-relations comedy drama usually associated with filmmakers like Jonathan Levine, Lynn Shelton and Marc Webb. Rajput may be the most likable shuddh desi newcomer since Siddharth. He's got depth beyond goofy for sure, and his portrayal of Raghu in Shuddh Desi Romanceis so natural without it seeming like a forced departure from his role in Kai Po Che. The lovely Chopra's eyes can effortlessly seduce you with their ability to show conflicting emotions. It's great to see that she isn't just a one trick pony, stuck in the cheerful feisty Punjabi kudi mould. She has genuine depth and nuance to boot. Kapoor is quite the surprise package and the fact that she can hold her own in the company of the other two is a testament to her screen presence. Aside from the main three, there's Rishi Kapoor in the most charming role of his career as a wedding planner worried about youngsters not respecting the sanctity of marriage and the impact of this attitude on his business in the future. Sahni's meticulous research is on full display here. This is not Jaipur exotica and the amount of detailing is just extraordinary, from the costumes to the sounds to the lights to the smells - everything feels so real and living and breathing. Even the songs are perfectly placed, and I doubt that you'll find a more beautifully shot desi film this year. The most enjoyable thing about Shuddh Desi Romance is that Sharma and Sahni happily resist the temptation to drift into the conventional problems of shuddh desi cultural traditions. Sloganeering and sermonising about the new age youth' is often heavy handed, but this film has enough well-placed laughs to bridge the cultural and generation gaps without alienating either. There is a scene late in the film where the two girls have a confrontation, and to say it annihilates formula and brings the house down would be an understatement. Rather than beating you on the head with its message, the scene charms you into seeing the characters' point of view as your own. It becomes clear about halfway through the film which girl Sushant's character will wind up with, but Sahni constantly plays with the character by making him choose unwisely, much to our amusement. We have all been in his situation, newly out of adolescence, eager to be adults and utterly bungling when it comes to love and it's damn good to see ourselves portrayed so vividly on the big screen. Kudos, Messrs Sahni and Sharma. More please.

SDR Takes Flying Start; Zanjeer's Opening Poor

by Soumita Sengupta (September 6, 2013)

This week, movie-goers will be treated to two releases at the cinemas. Those who have been eagerly awaiting the remake of yesteryear cult film Zanjeer will get to watch Ram Charan playing Amitabh Bachchan's iconic character. However, the film's opening was not up to the mark. The other release this week is Shuddh Desi Romance (SDR), a love triangle, featuring Sushant Singh Rajput, Parineeti Chopra and newbie Vaani Kapoor, which took a flying start. Distributors feel SDR will put up a strong performance at the ticket counter.

Rajesh Thadani, Multimedia Combines, Mumbai

Zanjeer opened with only 20 per cent all over India and the report of the film is also not great. It is hard to say whether the film will grow today. On the other hand, SDR opened with outstanding numbers. The morning shows had 80-per cent occupancy and by evening, the numbers should go up to 100 per cent. The film is youth-centric and the reports are also good.

Brijesh Tandon, HK Tandon and Company, Delhi-UP

In Delhi-UP, Sushant Singh Rajput's SDR opened with around 75 per cent, with the promise of its numbers climbing today. The film opened very well in UP as well as in Delhi. Zanjeer, in spite of being an action film, failed to get an opening in UP, which actually prefers action films. Zanjeer opened to barely 20 per cent.

Jaspal Dhingra, Nanaskar Enterprises, East Punjab

SDR took an opening of 70 per cent in the morning show and by afternoon, it should grow by another 20 per cent and evening 100 per cent. It's a youth-centric and feel-good film. But Ram Charan's debut film Zanjeer did not attract the audience. Footfalls for the morning shows were thin, as little as 5 per cent in our circuit.

Debashish Dey, Aum Moviez, West Bengal

Zanjeer opened with 15 per cent in West Bengal. I doubt the film will see any growth as the audience report for the film is not great. It's Sushant Singh Rajput's SDR that has cornered all the good reviews and opened with 70 per cent. This is really big for a film with a newcomer featuring in it. Youngsters are actually looking forward to watching it.

Ravi Machhar, Sahyog Films, Nizam

SDR opened at 60 per cent in Nizam. Amazingly, some cinemas in Hyderabad were house full, which is rare for a morning show. Word-of-mouth for this film is very strong. Zanjeer took an opening of 30 per cent but it might grow by evening as Ram Charan is a South superstar and the film has released in Telugu as Toofan.

Gaurav Gaur, O'Real Imaginations, Rajasthan

SDR took an opening of 70 per cent in Rajasthan and will do good business in this territory as the film has been shot in Rajasthan. The youth seem to like it a lot and the numbers will rise by evening and across the weekend. Zanjeer opened with 20 per cent.

Film Review: Shuddh Desi Romance is refreshing, breezy and engaging

Friday, Sep 6, 2013, 17:10 IST | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA

A story about three characters, Raghu (Sushant), Gayatri (Parineeti) and Tara (Vaani) who fall in and out of love, chase each other, cross paths at the oddest times, the film has a raw appeal to it.

Film: Shuddh Desi Romance
Cast: Sushant Singh Rajput, Parineeti Chopra, Vaani Kapoor , Rishi Kapoor
Director:Maneesh Sharma
Rating: ***

What's it about
There is a lot of running around that happens throughoutShuddh Desi Romance. As Rishi Kapoor's character suggests, there is a need to take a poignant pause before fatigue sets in.

A story about three characters " Raghu (Sushant), Gayatri (Parineeti) and Tara (Vaani) who fall in and out of love, chase each other, cross paths at the oddest times " the film has a raw appeal to it.

Set in Jaipur, we often relate to the situations and emotions the characters go through. Be it the first pangs of love, the cold sweat before walking up to the mandap, or that strange feeling of being desired by your ex even after a break up, most of the scenes seem real. SDR is extremely mushy yet stark and brutal in the same vein.

What's hot
Jaideep Sahni's writing is superb. He makes even the regular exchanges between characters seem interesting. Here he has the delight of working with an ensemble that's so fresh and full of spunk.

Sushant is in his element, and thankfully doesn't try to ape Ranveer Singh, given the tone of the character. He is funny and extremely likeable in his scenes with Parineeti whose super casual and cool approach to playing Gayatri is so refreshing.

So, her lighting up a cigarette or squatting on the floor uninhibitedly never feels forced or a trick. Vaani's character is the weakest among the three, but she manages to give a convincing performance. Her scene with Sushant perched atop the hill in the second half shows her efficiency as a performer.

What's not
In the second half, the pace plays the spoilsport. Also conversations seem a bit lengthy and stretched. Vaani's sudden exit and the logic leading to it after she speaks to Parineeti seems too rushed.

The moments where the characters speak their thoughts out aloud to the camera don't work. The curse of the second half takes the fun away from the light and frothy first. The bathroom episodes get a bit repetitive, especially during the wedding scene leading to the climax.

What to do
Refreshing, light, breezy and engaging, SDR will appeal to those who want a realistic take on love and is miles away from the usual patented formula.
