Review : Shuddh Desi Romance - Urban Romance

shudh-desi-romance-reviewRelease date : 06 Sep 2013 Rating : 3.25/5
Producer : Aditya Chopra
Director : Maneesh Sharma
Music Director : Sachin, Jigar
Starring : Sushant Singh Rajput, Parineeti Chopra, Rishi Kapoor

Sushanth Singh Rajput is probably one of the most sought after new comers in Bollywood. The successful TV star made his foray into films with the critically acclaimed Kai Po Che. Sushanth won rave reviews for his performance and landed himself a three film deal with Yash Raj Productions. His latest film, Shudh Desi Romance alongside Parineethi Chopra and Vaani Kapoor has created quite a buzz with its music. Directed by Band Baaja Baarat director Maneesh Sharma, this film has hit the screens today. Let's see how its

Story :

Raghu Ram(Shushanth Singh) is a fun loving tourist guide in Jaipur who does not believe in commitment. His uncle Tauji(Rishi kapoor) somehow convinces Raghu to get married. On the way to his wedding, Raghu meets Gayatri(Parineethi Chopra) and instantly connects with her leaving his own wedding halfway.

Gayatri and Raghu start getting closer to each other and even start living in. As in every relation problems are bound to exist, and the same happens with Raghu and Gayatri. After a certain point, the couple part ways and a disappointed Raghu moves on with his life.

One fine day, on his way to yet another wedding, Raghu stumbles upon his ex- would be wife Tara(Vaani Kapoor). Raghu confronts with Tara as to why he ran away from his wedding. Tara develops a liking towards Raghu and soon the couple start seeing each other. When everything is going on good, Gayatri makes a re-entry into the scene.

How does Raghu react? How does he confront Gayatri? and finally Whom does he end up with? That forms the rest of the story.

Plus Points :

Maneesh Sharma's script is such wonderful that it holds you on to the screens. The concepts of living in and marriage have been dealt in a very contemporary way. Sushanth Singh is a revelation. His performance is priceless as he plays the role of a confused lover with utmost ease. With Shudh Desi Romance Bollywood surely has yet another heartthrob in Sushanth.

Parineethi Chopra makes her character of a girl with modern values look believable. She is apt for her role and delivers a solid performance. Debutante Vaani Kapoor is here to stay. This model turned actress has the looks and also the acting talent. She is superb in the role of Tara and brings a fresh feel to the whole film.

Sushanth chemistry with both Parineethi and Vaani Kapoor is top class. The first half is entirely colorful and has a brisk space. The movie will surely have repeat audience for its foot tapping music.

Minus Points :

After a pacy first half, last 15 minutes of the film have been slightly dragged. The film is clearly made for its target audience like today's youth of India. Family audience might not connect with certain concepts of the film.

Sushanth Singh's character in the second lacks clarity. The way his mind wanders between the two girls has not been showcased clearly. Single screen viewers do not have much to look out for in terms of item songs and other masala elements. The way the climax has been showcased might surprise a few.

Technical Aspects :

Shudh Desi Romance has some of the best camera works in the recent times. The way Jaipur has been showcased is so wonderful. The entire set up looks perfect and contemporary. As said earlier, music is the highlight of the film. Editing is neat and so is the back ground score.

Screenplay of the film is a big plus. The way the scenes have been narrated and executed is top class. Though it is a basic old school triangular love story, the way Maneesh has handled it is praise worthy. They way today youth thinks about relations hips and marriage has been showcased in a novel way.

Verdict :-  On the whole, Shuddh Desi Romance has everything what the younger generation expects. Sizzling chemistry between the lead stars, awesome songs and a simple yet novel story makes this film definitely worth a watch. Rating -3.25/5

I become critical when Sushant dances, acts...its natural we have seen his best. And KPC was on different lever altogether.
Hope SDR lives up expectations Thumbs Up We will see it for ourselves and then WOM will start rolling

Movie Review - Shuddh Desi Romance; Confused, stupid and sluggish

CastSushant Singh RajputParineeti ChopraVaani KapoorRishi Kapoor.

Director: Manessh Sharma

Producer: Aditya Chopra

Music: Sachin Gupta, Jigar

Lyricist: Jaideep Sahni

Genre: Romantic-Comedy.

Rating: 2/5

Shuddh Desi Romance like we all know is about the love, attraction and commitment. But what I'd call it is that it's a movie about a panic mode that people, these days get into because of marriage. Commitment, as you know is like a drug. At first we're scared, then we're curious and then by the time you realise what deep shit you're in, you'll be married. The movie tries hard to depict all the human errors that are caused by impulsive decisions and fear of commitment.

Shuddh Desi Romance has three confused characters who claim to be in love but often jitter when it comes to marriage. They fail to deliver what the audience is looking out for and that is true love and real emotions. Instead the characters are shown running away from their own marriages for baseless and completely random reasons.

The film begins showing Raghu (Sushant Singh Rajput) who is suffering from pre-marital jitters. He meets Gayatri (Parineeti Chopra) on his way to the venue. Gayatri is a very open-minded, independant and an outspoken girl who likes to live her life king size on her own terms. Raghu is drawn towards these qualities of Parineeti and makes her the reason to run away from his wedding.  Tara (Vaani Kapoor) is left at the altar while a few days later, Raghu and Gayatri co-incidentally meet again and start dating. They eventually get into a live-in relationship (eventually being the next day), and it's pay back time for Raghu as our second confused character, Gayatri decides to run away from her own wedding.

Raghu is left shattered and inconsolable until he meets Tara at a wedding who gives him her number. Tara asks him out initially for a revenge trip but their relationship turns serious later on.  And when Raghu is just about propose Tara for marriage, Gayatri re-enters in his life, where the confusion reaches a whole new level.

The climax is so um, let's say dumb, I bet you'd get urges to leave the theatre there and then. And eventually, you'll do.

Performances: Sushant Singh Rajput is the star of this sinking ship with his charming looks and personality. Seemed like he was made for this role as he performs it with perfection. His expressions and dialogues are highly laudable. Parineeti Chopra's character was almost the same that we've seen in Ishaqzaade and Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, But she does a good job, pulling it off pretty nicely. There wasn't much for Vaani Kapoor in the film as the character really did not have a head or a tail. She'll charm you with her smile and her amazing looks, though! Rishi Kapoor is as always very charismatic with his witty and hilarious dialogues.

Technical- Aspect: Maneesh Sharma did good with his directorial efforts but the plot of the movie did lack sense, which apparently, is the most important aspect in today's Bollywood cinema. Though the director did not want to compare this modern chaos to the traditional mind, he fails to explain a few loose ends that were left without any explanation creating confusion and sluggishness. The music of the film was good. A few good tracks here and there and thankfully not much thrown into your face. The dialogues are pretty good, witty and fresh. Something which is rare, in today's cinema.

Review: Shudh Desi Romance: A Ride of Feelings With - Slow Script & Better Acting

By sonal Updated: 6 September 13Print

Rating: 3.5/5 (Three And A Half Stars)

Yash Raj Films have always presented one of the finest actors in Indian Film Industry and even this time it's no different. Sushant Singh Rajput has proved his versatility and Parineeti Choprahas emerged as even a better actor than before. Shudh Desi Romance is an enjoyable love comedy. Definitely it's not perfect. The story is repetitive and predictable but the mindblowing dialogues and funny one liners balances out the weakness of the film.

Parineeti is in her usual charming self as the somewhat over familiar bold girl role but Sushant Singh Rajput has surprised us. After Kai Po CheSDR is another sushant's flick which offered him variety in the role. He played an adorable lover with cute gestures which is quiet opposite to the roles he has been playing since the small screen daily soap Pavitra Rishta'. Newcomer Vaani is a clever choice for the role and all the characters collectively brings out an important yet undiscussed sensitive issue of the society with sheer simplicity. Legendary actor Rishi Kapoor is worth a mention and has taken the movie to another level.

Director Maneesh Sharma has the expertise to start the movie in an exciting way to keep the audience glued to the seat. His previous movie Band Baaja Barat was brilliantly directed as well.Shudh Desi Romance starts with Raghuram Seetaram (Sushant) who like his name is baffled with the idea of his wedding and delivers some funny one liners. Movie progresses with the introduction of all the characters and deals with attraction, love and commitment. Would Raghu be able to responsibly handle the commitments ? Would Gayatri find love in Raghu ? Watch the movie to get your answers.

SDR is full of spirit and ends on a happy note. Characters and dialogues have been kept very practical and realistic. Parineeti isn't in any new Avatar and thus very comfortable in her role. She played effortlessly and audience  could really connect with her. She is the new Vidya Balan of B-town with reduced weight and better appearance. Star-cast has no match with the simultaneously released flicks and offers a strong chemistry on screen. Direction deserves an applause whereas the script is the weakness of the movie.

The Script is perhaps a little too slow in some parts of the movie. There are certain parts where only a little happens, diverting the interest in the movie. Romantic movies often seek suspension of disbelief' and we all have accepted this fact in the past but SDR's script seek suspension of brains' instead. I would encourage you to demand more from a film especially when its a Yash Raj Production.

This Chopra' weekend, another release Zanjeer', which is a remake of the masterpiece featuringAmitabh Bachchan is a sureshot competitor with SDR. Though the actors in Zanjeer haven't performed as flawlessly as SDR but it's script is far complex and tightly knitted.

To sumup, Watch Shudh Desi Romance to experience a ride of feelings - love, guilt and commitment. Watch it with your loved ones or friends ; it offers a heavy dose of laughter.

Never a dull moment in Shuddh Desi Romance!
by Sukanya Posted on September 6, 2013

If everybody acted on the instincts they felt on the day of their wedding, it would result in a mass Shuddh Desi Romance' syndrome.

Call it nervousness, last-minute jitters or hesitation but the idea of going through an elaborate ceremony witnessed by a huge crowd of people you barely recognise (and is probably bitching about your make-up) is no one's idea of everlasting bliss and triggers an unexplainable urge to relieve or run.

And writer Jaideep Sahni offers a perfectly logical explanation for this untimely panic attack, Doubt ghadee dekhkar thodina aata hai.'

Weddings are largely (and arguably) expensive, public spectacles of a private sentiment, which can be carried out even in its absence. Director Maneesh Sharma explores this space, wearing somewhat rose-tinted glasses, with his new romantic comedy, Shuddh Desi Romance.

Live-in relationships are not a novelty at Yashraj. Films like Deewar (Amitabh Bachchan-Parveen Babi), Salaam Namaste (Saif Ali Khan-Preity Zinta) or Bachna Ae Haseeno (Ranbir Kapoor-Bipasha Basu) marked its presence in varying degree.

Only unlike Salaam Namaste, which is set in Australia and concerns itself with the difficulties and compromises of such arrangements, Shuddh Desi Romance unfolds in modern-day Jaipur (shot lavishly by Manu Anand) and maintains a tongue-in-cheek tone from start to finish.

Ironically, this is from a banner that's faced criticism for their glossy marriage-obsessed musical packages. With Shuddh Desi Romance, Yashraj endorses a script that parodies the event if not the institution with Sahni's humorously-penned repartees and a set of perfectly cast actors.

The script bears an urban spirit but the earthiness of Sushant Singh Rajput, Parineeti Chopra and Vaani Kapoor and their comfort in slipping under Raghu, Gayatri and Tara's skin conceals many of its awkwardness or inadequacies.

They're perplexingly similar in so many ways"easy on ambition, light-weight emotionality and quirky without warning. It makes their interactions both amusing and impersonal. And then comes that fascinating paradox challenging everything. There is a crackling chemistry between Raghu and Gayatri, Raghu and Tara as well as Gayatri and Tara. They're the children of wild, unchecked impulses inhabiting a world where heartbreak doesn't mean end of the world and letting go is easily said, easily done.

If the troika represent an aversion for complying to a society-dictated commitment, Rishi Kapoor (resembling a breathing version of those rotund, turban-clad Seth dolls in the souvenir market) who runs a wedding business embodies the mechanical, mindless, money-minded side of celebration. The reliably keen Kapoor highlights the proceedings with his wonderful bouts of exasperation and pragmatic pearls of wisdom while dealing with his own growing insecurity at going out of business.

Sharma, who previously directed Band Baaja Baarat and Ladies Versus Ricky Bahl, shows admirable restraint in spelling out the distinction or the generally nonconformist (by Bollywood standards) lifestyle/outlook of his characters in unusual professions.

After a dynamic debut in Kai Po Che!, Rajput channelises his abundant energy to convey the childlike ineptitude of a man who wears his heart on a sleeve.

A radiant, coral/pearl ring clad Parineeti Chopra owns the scenes she features in by way of her effortless vulnerability and unaffected charm.

Their fresh-faced co-star Vaani Kapoor does well for herself in perhaps the most tricky role of the three with her sharp composure and bright, quick-witted smile that is, on occasions, as incisive as Sahni's words.

Are romantic sensibilities so dispensable? Are live-in relationships really that simplistic? Shuddh Desi Romance doesn't probe and goes a tad overboard with the mockery towards the end. But it sure points out at the pink elephant in our society.

At its 141 minutes running time, there's never a dull moment in Sahni's penetrating jibes and whimsical trifling, which strives to convey a simple but underrated philosophy in the most fun way possible"marry because you want to, not because you must.
