'Haider' would be real depiction of pain of Kashmiris: Vishal Bharadwaj

Haider"I want to share the pain which the people of Kashmir have gone through in the last 20-25 years and I want to be very sensitive and honest about it," said Bharadwaj. (PTI)
Filmmaker Vishal Bharadwaj, who had to cut short the shooting of his film 'Haider' inside Kashmir University following protests by students, today said the sufferings of people of the Valley were the "biggest human tragedy" of our time.

Asserting that he was not unduly perturbed by the protests at the University campus in Hazratbal on Monday,he assured people of Kashmir that 'Haider' would be a real depiction of the pain people have gone through in the past two decades.

"I want to share the pain which the people of Kashmir have gone through in the last 20-25 years and I want to be very sensitive and honest about it... Kashmir is the biggest human tragedy of our time," Bharadwaj told reporters.

The filmmaker said he does not think any other part of the country has gone through a "bigger tragedy" than this. "In modern time since I have been born and grew up, I do not think any other part of the country has gone through such a bigger (sic) tragedy than this. And there has not been real depiction of that pain in Bollywood," Vishal Bharadwaj said.

Vishal Bharadwaj said he wants to tell the story of Kashmir. "All the characters are from Kashmir in my film. My film does not show people singing on a shikara (boat) or running with a gun. It is the story of a middle class family from here. My character is a well educated character," he said.

Vishal Bharadwaj lamented the negative portrayal of Kashmir in Bollywood movies, saying he feels ashamed. "I hear a lot that Bollywood does not depict the true picture of Kashmir. I feel ashamed but it is the vision of a filmmaker as to what he wants to show and I cannot change that."

"I want to tell the story honestly and you have to watch the film to believe me. I promise you that you won't be disappointed. I am treating the story honestly as I am not making the film for commercial reasons but for personal reasons," he said.

Vishal Bharadwaj said till now the people have seen Kashmir from outside but "I want to show it from inside".

The film crew, which has been shooting for 'Haider' in Kashmir for nearly two weeks, had to pack up after the students living in hostels in the University campus objected to hoisting of the national tri-colour atop a make-shift bunker.

"It was not a big deal. Even when we were in college we used to do that. I heard that some students were detained. It was very surprising and I felt very sad. There was no scene to hoist the national flag and I don't know what really happened," he said.

Expressing sadness over the non-existence of cinema halls here, the filmmaker said theatres should be opened for the entertainment of people.

"It is very sad that there are no cinema halls here. I went to Neelam cinema and saw its condition. There should be something for the entertainment of the people... Cinemas should be opened. I would love to restart them with 'Haider'," he said.

Vishal Bharadwaj expressed the wish of screening 'Haider' at the Kashmir university to share the story with students there.

"I think the students will be happy watching the movie," he said. Bharadwaj is shooting for 'Haider', starring Shahid Kapoor, Irrfan Khan and Shraddha Kapoor, since November 8.

The movie is an adaption of Shakespearean tragedy Hamlet and is set in Kashmir valley.

He also talked about having a wonderful time while shooting the film in Kashmir.

"The people here are very sweet and are very innocent. Their innocence has not been corrupted. 'Azaan' (call for prayers) reverberating from the mosques is so beautiful that I wish we had such beauty at our place," he said.

"I have not been able to separate myself from Kashmir since I have come here. It is a wonderful place," he said adding "I am not going to compromise on the vision I have for the film and not a single scene for the movie will be shot outside Kashmir," he added.

Vishal Bhardwaj's Hiader is his emotional outburst and not commercial masala

SRINAGAR: Omkara and Maqbool maker Vishal Bhardwajsaid Haider, his third trilogy based on hamlet is being done for emotional and not commercial reasons. He announced to premiere his film in University of Kashmir auditorium, the campus that witnessed a massive protests against shooting a particular shot on Sunday.

"I am doing this film for emotional reasons and not commercial reasons," Bhardwaj told a select group of reporters. "The film is an effort to share the pain that Kashmir has endured in all these years. It is about how one could have been brought up in Kashmir in last 25 years."

Bhardwaj said had this situation existed in Europe or US, it would have been led to making of more than fifty films. "I agree with that Bollywood has not done justice with Kashmir which has been the biggest tragedy of modern times," Bhardwaj said. "Truth should have been told somehow without taking sides."

Haider, a mid-budget film, staring Shahid Kapoor and Shradha as the lead characters with TabuIrfan Pathan and K K Menon in other supplementary roles, is the story of a middle class student pursuing his M Phil that a tragedy struck him. Menon is playing Uncle Claudius of Haider. It is this character that Bhardwaj is using to tell "the story of pain to a larger audience." He said he is talking of the pain and not the "politics of it".

Bhardwaj said while Bollywood filmmakers have routinely flown to Srinagar and made promises of being honest with the subject and failed on that, he would love to be judged on basis of the work I have already done. "Not a single character in the film is non-Kashmiri and we have 15 local artists playing different roles," Bhardwaj said identifying some of them as Aamir Bashir, Bashir Bhawani, Muzamil child artist Aasim. "We are using a lot of folk including the famous number Roush-e-Wala Posh-e-Dilbarou and we are using the folk dance band pather as well."

"We are shooting the entire film in Kashmir and not a single shot is being recorded in any studio in Mumbai," the celebrated filmmaker said asserting the script of the film speaks about the ground realities which he has personally studied during his frequent visits since 2010. "We have seen Kashmir from outside and this film is aimed at seeing it from inside." The filmmaker assured people that if the film disappoints them he will never return to Kashmir.

Asked if the return of Bollywood to Kashmir indicate some sort of normalcy, Bhardwaj said he has been seeing Kashmir quite normal every time he visited. "I move around with my family in Srinagar and the countryside without any police escort and I see things as normal as they are," Bhardwaj said. However, he regretted the closure of cinema halls. "I hope a cinema hall operates till the time we complete or otherwise we will premier it in the University of Kashmir auditorium," he said.

The crew has been shooting in Kashmir for last 19 days but it landed in a sort of problem in the University of Kashmir lawns on Sunday when students took exception to a group of artists performing in a particular scene. "They (students) did not know the context of the shot," the filmmaker said. "We shot it elsewhere after managing shooting in the university lawns for seven hours. The falling Chinar leaves gave the shot something that is unparalleled."

Even though Bollywood is a rare survivor of the conflict in Kashmir, people are unhappy with the depiction of Kashmir in the Bollywood films. Interestingly, when Bhardwaj met Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, he advised him against misrepresenting Kashmir. Bhardwaj said he is shooting entire film in Kashmir and is not claiming that it was shot elsewhere as was in the case Bachna Aay Hasina. Omar had taken a strong exception to the characters identifying the spot as Missouri even though the film was shot in Kashmir.
