Sriti Jha was born in Begusarai in Bihar. As a child, she spent 10 years in Kolkata, West Bengal after which she moved to Nepal where she attended Modern Indian School in Kathmandu. Her family later settled in Delhi where she studied at Laxman Public School and Sri Venkateswara College. It was here that she joined the English dramatics society named "Verbum" in 2004. She went on to become the President of the society and got her first main role in a Verbum play titled "Ritual in Blood". She won the Best Actor award in the Delhi University dramatics circuit for this particular performance.
SJ made her television debut in Dhoom Machao Dhoom (DMD) on Disney Channel. She played the shy and superstitious Malini Sharma who was part of the all-girl musical group in school called the Pink Band. Her stint on DMD coupled with her innocent girl-next-door looks led her to being cast as the lead in the romantic drama Jiya Jale on 9X channel as Sunaina. The show was short-lived but she was soon signed on to a new show Angad which unfortunately never took off. She was next seen on Imagine TV's Jyoti in which she played the parallel lead as Jyoti's sister Sudha. The role was something of a breakthrough for Sriti as she played a character with Mulitple Personality Disorder. She handled the roles of the timid and fearful Sudha and the bold and glamourous Devika with equal panache.
At the same time she was also signed on to play the main lead in Star Plus's fantasy show Shaurya Aur Suhani as Princess Suhani. Since both Jyoti and Shaurya Aur Suhani were helmed by Sphere Origins she was able to work simultaneously on both shows. Shaurya Aur Suhani came to a quick end and her track in Jyoti came to a close soon after which she joined Imagine TV's next Rakt Sambandh as main lead. In this show she played the role of Sandhya a blind girl who finds herself married under suspicious circumstances. Even in this role she was brilliant as the helpless blind girl who goes on to take revenge on her husband's family once she gets her eyesight back in the guise of tapori Vrinda.
After Rakt Sambandh ended she was chosen to star in one of the first shows on brand new channel Life OK (part of the Star network) called Dil Se Di Duaa...Saubhagyawati Bhava? This show was based on the issue of Domestic Violence and it was her role as the tortured wife Jhanvi which gained her the maximum popularity in her career so far. Her chemistry both with Karanvir Bohra who played her abusive husband as well as Harshad Chopra who played her savior and love interest was widely appreciated and has generated a huge fan following. However, due to creative differences she decided to leave the show in November.
She is now a part of Colors TV's Balika Vadhu, one of the most critically acclaimed and popular shows on TV in recent times. She plays the role of Ganga, a victim of child marriage and a mother of a 1 year old who runs away from her abusive husband and in-laws. Her stint with Balika Vadhu marks the third time she is working with Sphere Origins.
Her specialty lies in her choice of different roles and her versatile performances. She particularly excels at playing diametrically different characters sometimes in the same show, case in point being her performances as Sudha/Devika in Jyoti, Sandhya/Vrinda in Rakt Sambandh, and Jhanvi/Sia in Saubhagyawati Bhava.
It is said that the more a diamond is cut the more its brilliance dazzles.
Such is the case of Ganga a young, vivacious girl living in a remote village in Rajasthan. Fate dealt a cruel hand on little Ganga when she loses her parents and is forced to live under the shelter of her Uncle's home. Considered to be a huge burden by her aunt, she is forced to stop studying after 3rd std and is married off to Ratan Singh, a man almost as old as her father at the tender age of 12. Life in her husband's house turns out to be worse than hell as she is subjected to all kinds of abuse, punishment and marital rape.
But regardless of the daily beatings she never loses her spirit and continues to rebel and protest against their treatment of her, seeking out ways to escape from this monstrous family. When the opportunity finally comes she discovers she is pregnant and starts to have hopes of better treatment by her husband and in-laws. But all that is shattered when she discovers her husband bringing in his new wife. She gives birth to little Mannu who now becomes the center of her universe and despite her daily torture dreams of a better life and future for her son.
Ratan & his family's constant inhuman treatment makes her fear for her son and she attempts to escape the house along with Mannu. Its on one such night Ganga meets Dr.Jagdish Singh for the first time, a man who would later go on to become a very pivotal person in her and Mannu's life. After overhearing Ratan's plan to dispose of her, she again escapes with Mannu only to be caught and beaten almost to death by Ratan who takes away her child. She is saved by Dr.Jagdish who along with his family gives her a haven and provides her with all the love and care which she never experienced in her life. Soon she is reunited with Mannu and with Jagdish's and his ex-wife Anandi's encouragement restarts her education with hopes of becoming a nurse in order to become independent and provide Mannu with a better future.
