Bollywood has changed. Gone are the days when independent producers dominated the industry. Today, corporates who already have the big stars on board, rule the roost. The directors come into the picture at a later stage. The collateral damage: Several leading directors who gave us superhits are either struggling or have faded into oblivion. TOI delves deeper

Last Big Release: Dhoom 2 (2006)
Journey Thereafter: The erstwhile Dhoom guy has not put a single project on the floors after his last film AjabGazabb Love tanked at the box office. After a forgettable debut with TereLiye (2000), he first got a taste of success was with Mere YaarKiShaadiHai (2002). But it was Dhoom (2004) that made him a name to be reckoned with. However, after Dhoom 2 his luck ran out. Recently, we hear, he has been asked to write Ameesha Patel's maiden production.
John Matthew
Last Big Release: Sarfarosh (1999)
Journey Thereafter: Six years after Sarfarosh, he made Shikhar, which sank without a trace. Four years later, he directed a film, A New Loveish Story, starring Himesh Reshammiya in the lead. However, the film never saw the light of the day. However, Matthew is optimistic of a second innings: "I am not frustrated. My film with Himesh got stuck but I shall bounce back. Matthew started his career assisting Sir Richard Attenborough on Gandhi (1982).
Rajiv Rai
Last Big Release: Gupt (1997)
Journey Thereafter: A few months after Gupt was released, he left for UK with his family after an alleged underworld attempt to kill him failed. When he returned to India, he tried to make a comeback with Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat (2001) and Asambhav (2004). But, both the films tanked prompting him to pack his bags and leave for the UK again. However, Rai is in the city for the past one year and has been meeting actors and producers to launch a new project.
Rahul Rawail
Last Big Release: Dacait (1987)
Journey Thereafter: The man who gave Kumar Gaurav and Vijeta Pandit their dream debut with Love Story (1981) and made a nation fall in love with debutantes Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh in his film Betaab (1983) slowly lost his mojo after Arjun (1985) and Dacait (1987). His later films bombed. However, Rawail is not living in a fool's paradise and says, "You are as good as your last film. And I shall soon make a fantastic film. The script is ready."
Tanuja Chandra
Last Big Release: Sangharsh (1999)
Journey Thereafter: The woman who wrote screenplays of films like Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) and Zakhm (1998), and made her directorial debut with the critically acclaimed Dushman starring Kajol, had the promise of becoming one of the big names of Bollywood. However, although her next film-Sangharsh (1999) got thumbs up from the critics, failed to impress the masses and tanked at the box office. None of her later films clicked at the box-office.
Ken Ghosh
Last Big Release: Ishq Vishq (2003)
Journey Thereafter: Post Ishq Vishk, he directed Fida (2004) and Chance Pe Dance (2010), both starring Shahid Kapoor. Neither of the films worked well with the audience and his friendship with Shahid soured during the making of Chance Pe Dance. Thereafter, he struggled for three years to put an idea on celluloid. However, now he is reportedly making a film with Arshad Warsi, R Madhavan and Aditi Rao Hydari which is a story of two conmen.
