Those who call Sonakshi overweight, should get a life: Ranveer

Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha in Kolkata on Saturday
By their own admission, they have never met outside work. But that didn't stop rumourmongers from spinning stories on how the duo spent the last Valentine's Day together. In Kolkata to talk about their latest film together — 'Lootera' — Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha open up on things close and not so close to their hearts. A TOI chat:

Sonakshi plays a Bengali girl in Looteraand Ranveer, her suitor. How strong is your Bong connect?
Sonakshi: Among the characters that I've played so far, this is my most favourite. It was a very challenging role. She goes through many emotional ups and downs in two-and-a-half hours. It was really fun and a great learning experience. The film is set in 1950s. I play a zamindar's daughter — Pakhi Roychowdhury. She is interested in art — a very Bengali trait to have.

Ranveer: It was a very, very different experience for me. I think fortunately in the narrative, I fall head over heels in love with her atthe first meeting. So, I have the support of the narrative in instinctively reacting to a Bengali girl. I do believe that they are some of the most beautiful women on this planet. I play a polite, charming, seeminglytrustworthy guy, who wins the faith of Pakhi and her father and betrays them. The story takes off from there.

Isn't the film based on O Henry's The Last Leaf
SThe Last Leaf is a short story, while ours is a two-and-a-half hour film. Vikramaditya Motwane (director) has incorporated the story very well into the narrative. It is a small but integral part of the our film.

R: I studied The Last Leaf in Class IX. It was part of my English literature syllabus and I remember it having a profound effect on me even back then. The story was beyond my years and I still remember it eliciting an emotional reaction from me. It's one of the few stories that stuck with me even after school. Being part of a film that in a way incorporates the beauty of the story is, for me, coming full circle.

Both of you have come back to the city again and again. How has Kolkata treated you?
R: Well, there's always a tremendous amount of warmth. When we came here for Lootera, it was heartwarming to see the kind of support that people were ready to lend even in the smallest parts of the state. When you are here for two months, your associates become your family. To see the kind of reach that the Hindi film industry has and the love and affection of people in Purulia, where we shot, was humbling. People came from faraway villages just to catch a glimpse!

S: I visit Kolkata at least two to three times a year. I was here for a month for Lootera and then came back for Bullett Raja. I keep coming back. Whenever I'm here, I make sure I'm not on a diet so that I can gorge on the lovely food that the city has to offer.

Was it scary shooting in Purulia, a Maoist-affected district?
R: Well, not really. I think even if we were to be captured by the Maoists, they wouldn't have had anything against us. They would also be amused and happy to see us. I think it would be a pleasant interaction. I don't see why they should have a problem with either of us.

S: There was a lot of police protection and we felt secure throughout. At times the crowds would get very big. But they were all very cooperative.

Ranveer injured his back while shooting. Any other hiccups?
R: Sonakshi got miffed and stormed out of the sets once. There was this dialogue... I was supposed to hold her tight and say, 'Police ko tumne bulaya?' When I said 'tum', a lot of saliva came out of my mouth and Sonakshi was very angry. She warned me against it but I didn't want to lessen the intensity with which I was saying the dialogue. It continued and finally, Sonakshi went really, really mad and left the sets in a silent rage, while I kept following her, trying to apologize. She entered her van and screamed her lungs out. Idiot, she said!

S: It's a good story to tell but at the point it was quite eeky.

Ranveer is known as much for his films as his link-ups. During the shoot in Bengal, stories abound on how the two of you spent Valentine's Day together
S: We were shooting on Valentine's Day, so we didn't have a choice really but to spend the day with each other. We are both professionals, so we know what to take seriously and how not to let such rumours affect our professional rapport. We didn't pay attention. Also, we never really met outside work.

R: When we are working, we joke a lot. We laugh a lot. It's always a fun time. Her closest associates are also a fun bunch of people. Other than our professional interactions, we haven't really met socially, unless we bump into each other.
S: Yes, at awards!

You both started out in 2010. While Ranveer is second cousin to Sonam Kapoor, Sonakshi hails from a film family. So, there's a lot of similarity between the two of you.
R: We know a lot of common people, which gives us common ground to chat.

S: But we have never really met before starting work on Lootera.

R: I am trying to remember the first time we met.

S: At an award function... Yes, we bumped into each other at an award function. We had both won awards and were crossing each other and gave a hi-five. We get along well. We work very well, the result is for all to see.

Sonakshi has always got brickbats for being overweight and Ranveer once came to your rescue, saying you have the real woman's body.
R: I think Sonakshi is really hot.

S: I have stopped answering such things. Now, I don't get affected anymore. I look as good as I am.

R: I've seen her do action, dance, things that are very, very demanding. And Sonakshi is extremely fit, healthy and strong. At the same time, she looks gorgeous. The feedback on her look in Lootera is amazing. I know she is getting a lot of messages. And more than that, I'm getting messages saying, 'Please convey to Sonakshi that she is looking absolutely splendid'. I feel very protective about her and I think all those people who criticize her on a superficial basis, should get a life first.
