MUSIC REVIEW: 'Shuddh Desi Romance' An Unlikely Candidate For The Year's Best

By Manish Gaekwad on August 21, 2013

SHHUDH21082013

The duo of Sachin-Jigar composing music for films, have remained on the fringe so far, but that is about to change with the soundtrack of 'Shuddh Desi Romance'. It is a career resurrection, a big league break to be on the Yashraj music label.

The Chauhans, Sunidhi and Mohit start a tug of war on Tere Mere Beech Mein using a 'chaddar' to shed some light on their new found love life. The tuba-trombone-accordion intersperse warms the cockles of your heart and sets your feet up for some fancy footwork. It's almost like a smooth advert for a brand of dappled sunshine in your routine, damp, dull life.

The Saraiyas, (note the teaming) Jigar and Priya sing Gulabi. Lute instruments and harmonium, the folksy sounds of Rajasthan mixed with autotune vocals is gorgeous. Had the tempo been slow, one would return to Ek Pardesi Mera Dil Le Gaya ('Phagun') but the times are changing. Gulabi is as much modern as it is a vintage tribute to romance with breezy lyrics and spirited singing.

Divya Kumar's Chanchal Mann Ati Random starts off on a beaten track, then shifts to raga-rock interlude, and its Divya's song altogether, jumping genre hurdles with a catchy chorus chasing him through the maze.

The title track has its roots back in the nineties, when Govinda-Karishma shimmied to Jeth Ki Dopeher Mein Paaon Jalaye Hain, and other B movie spin-offs, most dubious of them, Asha Bhonsle screeching, 'macchi ban jaongi, kebab ban jaongi (holy cow!) in 'Sarhad'. Despite, Sachin-Jigar give their 'Shuddh Desi Romance' a zing of its own coming-of-age lyrics, a 'pure' template to an old format?

Of the five instrumental tracks, and each one of them keeps getting better than the previous arrangement. These boys have something of a wizardry in arrangement, going latin, blues, desi, ambient what a symposium of sounds.

Shuddh Desi Romance - Music Review

image

Maneesh Sharma is back with his third venture after Band Baaja Baarat & Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl. This one will be his third venture with Yash Raj Films.

Sushant Singh Rajput (Kai Po Che fame), Parineeti Chopra, Rishi Kapoor & newcomer Vaani Kapoor complete the starcast.

Sachin - Jigar who are having a dream run this year get a golden oppurtunity to compose for a Yash Raj project. Super talented Jaideep Sahni has written the lyrics and also the movie.

1. Tere mere beech main - A perfect start to the soundtrack. The playful banter of words by Jaideep Sahni is put to great use by Sachin-Jigar who come up with a lovely melody. A breezy love song which will be on your lips from the moment you hear it. Mohit Chauhan & Sunidhi Chauhan are simply superb with their vocals. A special mention to the way the track begins with the noise of the street of an Indian city brings a smile to your face instantly.

Rating - 4/5

2. Gulabi - Things only get better with this song. Sachin-Jigar are in complete form with their music arrangement here and the result is fabulous. Jigar & Priya are spot on with their vocals. The fusion of desi lyrics with contemporary sound is thoroughly enjoyable. The harmonium is used to great effect in this track.

Rating - 4/5

3. Chanchal man ati random - The lyrics, music, singing everything hits the right note in this out and out desi fun number. As much as I enjoyed listening the song, Divya Kumar must have relished singing the super quirky lyrics even more. The song begins with the noise of birds early morning and how the character wakes up with the randomness of his mind doing flip flop, it is these small touches which adds to overall experience.

Rating - 3.5/5

4. Shuddh desi romance - When you have Benny Dayal & Shalmali Kholgade singing together you forget everything else about the song and get blown away by their vocals. Sachin-Jigar use the harmonium to great effect here too along with the contemporary sound. A fun number which has a lovely melody and lyrics going for it.

Rating - 4/5

5. Mujhe kiss kar sakte ho - From here onwards it is all instrumental pieces. At just over two minutes, it has lot to offer in terms of Spanish guitar, accordion, piano and they all come together to make it a very nice melody.

Rating - 4/5

6. Love in Jaipur - A very interesting fusion of Rajasthani vocals with a bluesy music arrangement. The end result is pretty good. An enjoyable piece of music.

Rating - 3.5/5

7. Tez waala attraction - It is more like a prequel to the chanchal mann ati random, so if you like the song you are likely to enjoy this piece of instrumental too.

Rating - 3/5

8. Boyfriend banogey - A prequel to the gulabi track, this one is a good build to the song. The idea of including these instrumental pieces with the soundtrack makes for a good experience from listeners point of view.

Rating - 3.5/5

9. Bhanwara ma bhatke - This one is alright and might work better on the screen as a background piece.

Rating - 3/5

The soundtrack remains true to the title of the movie. There is something very desi yet contemporary about the way each track has been designed.

The lyrics, lovely melodies, fabulous vocals all come together to create a great album which is thoroughly enjoyable and easily one of the best this year.

Sachin-Jigar have delivered good albums consistently throughout the year and they raise the bar for themselves even more with this album.

Overall Rating - 4/5

My pick - The whole album :)

'Live-in relationships are born out of lust': Film survey finds Desi Romance pretty Shuddh

By PRIYANKA SRIVASTAVA

PUBLISHED: 17:33 EST, 22 August 2013 | UPDATED: 17:33 EST, 22 August 2013

To create a buzz about the upcoming romantic comedy Shuddh Desi Romance, Yashraj Productions along with Ormax Media conducted a survey on the love life of young people in smaller cities across the country.

The survey 'Shuddh Desi India Ki Romantic Soch' revealed some startling facts about the changing mindset of the youngsters living in the hinterland. Samples were taken from 40 cities, including Aurangabad, Ahmadabad, Indore, Kota, Jaipur and Visakhapatnam, to get insight into issues such as relationship, commitment, marriage and pre-marital sex.

The survey, conducted among 5,000 youngsters, is in sync with the theme of the film which is about love and live-in relationships.

The film stars Sushant Singh Rajput, Parineeti Chopra, Rishi Kapoor and newcomer Vani Kapoor. Writer Jaideep Sahni also gave his input on the basis of his observations, which revealed a major clash between the opinions of the youngster vis--vis their parents.

Indians still have mixed views about live-in relationships, as 68 per cent of youngsters believed live-in relationships were born out of lust, while 72 per cent believed that live-in relationships fail and end in break-ups.

Fifty-two per cent of the young men were looking for a chance to explore a live-in scenario, while only 36 per cent of women agreed to it. Almost 80 per cent of the parents believe that those in a live-in relationship have 'loose characters'.

As many as 50 per cent of men believe that girls above 18 who are still virgins are old-fashioned, but, only 33 per cent young women agreed with it.

According to the study, 89 per cent of parents believe sex before marriage is unacceptable, while 51 per cent of the youth disagreed with them.

Smaller cities are opening up to the issue of virginity, as 45 per cent of young men are open to marrying a non-virgin, while 82 per cent of parents were opposed to the decision.

The men surveyed demonstrated a regressive view on women as 75 per cent of them feel that girls who wear revealing clothes encourage eve-teasing and rape, while 41 per cent of women agreed with them.

In case of an unplanned pregnancy out of wedlock, 22 per cent of young men preferred an abortion, while only 2 per cent women considered it as an option.

Seventy three per cent men believe women who smoke lack good values, and five per cent even compared them to prostitutes.

Shuddh Desi Romance Music Review

GlamshamBy glamsham.com editorial | Glamsham " 7 hours ago

By Rafat, Glamsham Editorial

SHUDDH DESI ROMANCE brings back the hit partnership of Yash Raj Films and director Maneesh Sharma, who have regaled audience with pure entertainment and some superb music through BAND BAJA BARAAT and to an extent even LADIES V/S RICKY BEHL. Instead of going in for their favourite composer duo, Salim-Sulaiman, promising and highly talented young guns Sachin-jigar have been entrusted with the task of composing for the film based on live-in-relationship of a young couple. Sachin-Jigar are indeed flying high this year with chartbusting music in successful films like GO GOA GONE and RAMAIYA VASTAVAIYA, and one expects some high quality music from the duo, especially for the premier Yash Raj banner. The two Chauhans, Mohit and Sunidhi, are simply outstanding in 'Tere Mere Beech Mein', a number that one warms up to instantly due to the easy to hum, infectious tune, the superb chorus and simply irresistible music arrangements that comprises of instruments like guitar, accordion, sax and street sounds like horn, whistles. Jigar Saraiya and Priya (Panchal) Saraiya team up for 'Gulabi', a sort of a tribute to the pink city, Jaipur, where the film is based. It is a lovely composition that has a dew fresh tune composed around Rajasthani folk and embellished with Hindustani musical instruments like harmonium, table and 'sarangi'Rock and raga' fusion along with folk form the backbone of 'Chanchal Man Ati Random', a unique and certainly 'hatke' number that etches out the travails of the restless flirty heart in an entertaining manner. The highlight of the track are the superb humorous lyrics and folk lingo (Hindi and English) and Divya Kumar's emotive rendition. The title track 'Shuddh Desi Romance' is a bit of a downer as it has strong resemblance to Govinda-Karisma ''Jeth Ki Dopahri Mein'' in parts which itself was inspired from a popular Bhojpuri folk tune. The 'antara' is different with retro and pop fusion and is quite catchy. Benny Dayal and Shalmali Kholgode do the needful with zest and vigour. There are five instrumentals in the album, 'Mujhe Kiss Kar Sakte Ho', 'Love In Jaipur', 'Tez Wala Attraction, 'Boyfriend Banoge' and 'Bhanwara Ma Bhatke'.It appears that instrumentals has become the need of the hour or one can say a recent trend as even an album like MADRAS CAF too had as many as five instrumentals. Let's check the instrumentals here one by one.Lovely accordion, thrilling Spanish guitar, cello and piano base make up the over two minute long instrumental, 'Mujhe Kiss Kar Sakte Ho'. 'Love In Jaipur' is a superb fusion of Rajasthani folk inspired from 'Pallo Latke' (NAUKAR) and jazz and Priya Panchal's earthy, nasal vocals are used in repeated Rajasthani chorus. 'Tez Wala Attraction' is based on 'Chanchal Man Ati Random' folk tune though the added pace is a slight dampener.'Boyfriend Banoge' too is an instrumental based on yet another song,'Gulabi', although the start in bursts and pieces adds to confusion .'Bhanwara Ma Bhatke' is not quite an instrumental but more of a short remix with lots of added pace and rhythm and Divya Kumar's broken, repetitive folksy vocals. Sachin-Jigar have indeed lived up to expectations and have delivered as per the demand of the makers with fresh tunes, classy musical arrangements that is the hallmark of their hold over music. The songs are already in the charts and will go a long way in ensuring that the film opens reasonably when it releases world- wide on 6th September.

On record: Shuddh Desi...

By ANAND HOLLA, Mumbai Mirror | Aug 28, 2013, 04.38 AM IST
On record: Shuddh Desi...
Folking good

This isn't a conventional soundtrack, not in how it has more instrumentals (five) than songs (four), but in how refreshingly it uses guitar, accordion and harmonium with folk elements.

Gulaabi, the breezy tribute to the Pink City begins promisingly with muddled synths and a loveable electronica-folk base. Jigar Saraiya and Priya Saraiya justify putting their voices through auto tune, as it lends well to the melody backed by harmonium and sarangi bits. The track is A R Rahman-esque in its flawless transition into multiple moods; an ode to the mirth of Jaipur as powerful as Delhi-6 was to Delhi.

Sunidhi Chauhan and Mohit Chauhan ace the conversational structure of the easy-going Tere Mere Beech Mein Kya Hai. A solid guitar riff gets terrific company from accordion, trombone and even a busy locality's ambient sounds, while the track's fluidity uses varied ways to keep the beat. Jaideep Sahni's playful yet mature lyrics add to the magic.

Divya Kumar lights up Chanchal Mann Ati Random, a Rajasthani folk-meets-rock jam. Sachin-Jigar seem to have fun pulling all the percussion tricks they can think up to keep this cleverly-written track interesting.

The title track isn't as evolved as the other three, conforming to an underwhelming, happy-golucky melody. Benny Dayal and Shalmali Kholgade, however, lift the song up a few notches with their vocal chemistry.

All the five, brief instrumentals are rich in texture and depth. Mujhe Kiss Kar Sakte Ho uses the pulsating synth well against keys, before moving to a rush of classical guitars and accordions. Love In Jaipur does a fabulous job of inducing bossa nova into a catchy folk song. Bhanwara Ma Bhatke has flutes battling with bass and synth. Both Tez Waala Attraction and Boyfriend Banogey are nicely rehashed versions of Chanchal Mann and Gulaabi.

Sachin-Jigar get the mix of Rajasthani folk, latin and jazz just tangy enough to appease the shuddh desi romantic in you.
