An 80-year-old widow is battling for life at a government hospital in
Malliyakarai, Tamil Nadu, after she was brutally raped by a 41-year-old
vegetable vendor in her home on Friday night.
The accused, K Palanisamy was nabbed while trying to flee by the victim's neighbours.
The victim had been living alone in her house since her husband had
died and her son and daughter were married. Palanisamy, who has 4
children from 2 wives, was on his way home after delivering vegetables.
At 11 pm, a drunken Palanisamy stopped at the victim's house and on
finding the door open, asked her for water. When she refused, he forced
his way into the house, held her by her throat and raped her, said a
police officer. He also allegedly bit her private parts.
"The woman was old and weak. She couldn't free herself from the assailant's grip," the officer said.
After raping her, Palanisamy threatened to kill the woman if she
informed anybody and then tried to run away. However, when the victim's
neighbours heard her cries, they rushed out of their houses, caught
Palanisamy and handed him over to the police. They then rushed the
victim to Athur hospital, from where she was shifted to the ICU of
Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital in Salem, where
her condition is stated to be critical.
booked Palanisamy under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 376 (rape), 448
(punishment for house-trespass), 506 (criminal intimidation) and the
SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
