11th May 1973. An obscure film, from which nobody had any expectations, released and within days went to create history, forever changing the landscape of Indian cinema and redefining what it meant to be a HERO onscreen. Prakash Mehra's ZANJEER celebrates 40th anniversary today! 40 years of a cult film and 40 years of the superduperstardom of a COLOSSUS called AMITABH BACHCHAN!! Party

This thread is dedicated to celebrate and commemorate the anniversary of this landmark film by Bolly fans in our own small way.

I'll be posting trivia and facts about this film throughout and I also request all other interested members to contribute to this thread with their memories of this film, trivia, comments, pics and videos.

It's our small tribute to the film which marked the rise of the SUN called Amitabh Bachchan and rewrote rules of filmmaking, entertainment and stardom in history of Indian cinema!

Also, a HUGE HEARTFELT CONGRATULATIONS to our very own Sher Khan - PRAN Saab for receiving the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in the 40th anniversary year of this film which gave him one of the most famous roles of his career! Clap

ZANJEER -

An ironic and kind of ominous title. With this film, the struggling with flops Amitabh Bachchan finally broke the "zanjeer" of failures and obscurity & rose like NO OTHER STAR ever! Star

- Zanjeer marked hattrick of successful films for the iconic writer duo Salim-Javed. Clap

- Zanjeer single-handedly shook Rajesh Khanna's throne and heralded a new order in the industry.

- With Zanjeer, Amitabh Bachchan finally finished off the reign of Dilip-Dev-Raj trinity, which had already been at receiving end of blows by likes of Rajendra Kumar, Dharmendra and most importantly, Rajesh Khanna.

It's this film which signalled the DK-RK-DA trinity that they were only fit to play older roles now! Cool

  • - Zanjeer and in that same year Abhimaan, gave us one of the eternal couples of Bollywood onscreen and in real life - Amitabh Bachchan & Jaya Bhaduri.

- Zanjeer put an END to era of romantic, sugar sweet films, giving way to more gritty, action -packed films that reflected angst of the common man in Indian society.

- Zanjeer gave us iconic in her own way - Mona Darling! Wink

- Zanjeer gave Bollywood its original Teja - the suave baddie immortalised by the great Ajit!

- I forgot to add, it gave Indian cinema the ultmate heroic mould in the character of VIJAY! Thumbs Up

I knew somebody would say that. I'm not surprised I was proven right so soon! LOL

I am sorry to say but only a person who has skimmed the surface would call Zanjeer a bore.

Zanjeer reflects angst of common man trapped in a corrupt society. I believe it is one of Amitabh Bachchan's most natural, impactful and controlled performances ever! He was brilliant in showing seething rage, yet never being OTT for a moment.

Salim-Javed started putting in more entertainment in later films. But Zanjeer is more serious and gritty. This is why it rocks!

The pain of a boy who's witnessed death of his parents yet had to keep silent. The pain which later turns into a seething fire of revolt within him as he grows up. It's superb characterisation by Salim-Javed and super-solid performance by Amitabh Bachchan!

Till date many have copied that formula but could never bring out the controlled, balanced portrayal of angst the way the Zanjeer team did. Clap

The issues explored in Zanjeer are relevant even today!

Witness protection, nexus of police and CBI with powerful criminals, corruption, bribes, honest people losing their all due to rich bigwigs with criminal record, tampering of evidence, tampering with the law and judicial processes to incriminate the innocent and free the actual criminals, an impotent rage among common people to do something to stop the muck going around them, indifference of the vulnerable classes (like women and the middle class) towards crime and corruption and their trying to laugh it off or live with it or else lose their lives, the fearlessness and utter disregard of criminals and their men for the administration/govt/law and treating the adminstration like puppets in their hands, the constant threat to lives of police informers - every issue we face till date is portrayed in Zanjeer.

Amitabh-Jaya love story is subtle and romantic in its own way.

She is a wild, freespirit child of the streets whereas he's a controlled, stickler for rules and educated man in an urban milieu. She softens heart of a much hardened bitter man and helps him deal with past trauma, brings out a smile on his face after years.

He makes her a lady with his film, disciplined yet genial behaviour.
She's indifferent and is used to ignoring or mocking social evils. It's HE who makes her realise how important it is to speak up and fight.

The sequences in which he takes her to the mortuary to show dead bodies to make her realise gravity of the crime and later she gets moved to agree to speak out as a witness is IMO one of the most powerful, pertinent and effective instances in history of the screen (be it big or small!).

Pran is an agent of evil. But the film shows everything's not always bad. His change of heart, his reformation and later his sheer loyalty and friendship towards Amitabh are brilliant, sensitive and impactful.

His attempts to intervene betwen Jaya, Amitabh's family and Amitabh and always unite them make for a delightful watch.

His and Amitabh's friendship is also a great comment on Hindu-Muslim unity.

Amitabh's character and Om Prakash's character (as police informer) are both bound by tragedy of deep personal loss. One has lost his parents, another has lost his kids. They are vulnerable in memory of their individual losses but emboldened and fired up due to rage of getting back at the forces that wrecked their lives.

Zanjeer came in at the right time. When country was a young democracy, reeling under corruption, poverty and our so called leaders themselves were looting our nation. Many could see themselves in VIJAY.

Even in today's times, whether you've faced any tragedy or not, if you have any concern for the wrongs happening around you, you'd relate to Vijay!

It inspires us to take things in our own hands, not to pull the curtains and stay silent but to speak out, to use anger as a weapon to fight injustice.

MOST importantly, it's a lesson for bodies like police, CBI, judiciary etc. that they are to perform their duty to the nation! They are MEN and not pawns to serve interests of politicians, the rich or the well connected!

All the films later took Zanjeer as a textbook in portrayal of individual, society, crime and law.

It's a unique film exploring evolution of human psyche as it interacts with a corrupt society.

(P.S. - I didn't copy it from anywhere. I wrote this reply as a freewheeling thought. I believe films should not just be seen with the eyes. Keeping the mind's eye open also enriches the viewing experience and reveals more meanings conveyed by the film than what only the superficial reading reveals)
