This topic is for those people who are of Indian origin and stay outside India.
I want to know what is the opinion of NRIs living outside India,who are born and brought up outside India or who have been away from India for a long long time.
Do u like the country or hate it?Do u ever want to visit the country? How do NRIs look at India?What is ur general perception about the country?

This is a really interesting question and pertinent for me considering I'll be going to India in mid May..

I love being Indian: love the culture, the history, the food, the vibrancy and how India is just so vast, home to many diaspora, religions, languages. There is no single, national identity - each region is unique. I love all these even more the further I am from India. LOL

Seriously, there are many positives and if I was going as a tourist I think I would truly enjoy my visit.

I don't know if other people feel the same, but the fact that I'm going to interact with my family over there, who will be nosy, will gossip and not hesitate to proffer thinly veiled insults to my face...that kind of ruins the pleasure. LOL

India is great, relatives in India can be a pain.

As an NRI myself, I do love India from all my heart, however only as an NRI, a tourist. India does not allow dual citizenship, and as a British Citizen, i will NEVER renounce my British citizenship for an Indian one. So does this answer your question, of what i think about India? Yes, it is a great place for holiday, but for living personally, no.

You may find this article interesting that was published last year, it is an interesting read on why some would leave West for East. I guess, it all boils down to what caters for your needs and where there is better living opportunities.

On another note, India is my FIRST choice for holiday destination! I love how different one city is from another in India! Like in the UK, you move from one city to another and the only difference you discover is in the accent LOL

, the language, the culture everything else is comparable. However, in India moving from Rajashtan to Delhi or from Banaras to Bihar is like travelling a completely different country. India is SO rich in culture! So diverse! The language, the culture, everything is different, a lot to learn! So in short, yes UK is boring in comparison to India, but i am happy living here, and love visiting India :)

Not sure if I qualify, sine I haven't been away from India for that long.. just about four years now.

I love the country .. as in its food, culture and arts, diversity, language and even sports Tongue

.. everything about it except the regressive mentality of its people.. including surprisingly most of my relatives.

I have been visiting India at least once every year since I got here. I guess India will always be home .. or well rather my home will always be my home LOL

.. so if my family wasn't there I wouldn't go back to India, even for a holiday!

BTW, I think there was a similar post on DM a few months ago about why people leave India.

And Gumrah, I did read that article on BBC .. they had a few related ones.. and I was pretty surprised by those articles. I can see why people want to set up mobile app businesses in India .. India is a huge market for that. As to kids moving back to India, well I guess that could be because they don't understand why exactly their parents left. If you want to move back to India, I suggest moving before you have kids, because once the kids get used to living abroad, it will be hard for them to adjust in India. On the other hand, I am glad I grew up in India, I think I can pretty much live anywhere Tongue

Try explaining to an American what life is like in the summer with no electricity and water.. they would feel bad for you.. and if you explain its actually part of life and you just get used to it after a while.. then they would look at you as though you came from the slums and I have to explain that I lived in a city all my life.

What about scenes such as these that you could get to see only in India. Try explaining these to a foreigner and see the reaction LOL

Haha.. of course..

LOL.. some of those pics you see with Indians in the US too.

The swamis playing football especially cracked me up .. 'coz we had a swamiji visit my college few years ago and he hung out with us.. played cricket and soccer.. was a cool dude! Tongue

I mean I can tell you that .. there is no place like India, truly Smile

I can never explain that feeling I get when the plane lands .. Embarrassed

But will I live there.. or want my future daughter to grow up there.. maybe not!

I have lived in Australia for about 8-9 years now. Visited India a couple of times. Last I went was a few months ago.

Honestly, my viewpoint of India has deteriorated considerably. Ever since the corruption has worsened and rapes have gotten worse, all I see India as this country which does not provide due justice, and corrupt politicians that are hell bent on saving their own ass.

But there is this other side to India as well - the cultural, the colourful, the traditional, the festive, Bollywood.

So there is a good and a bad.

Right now the bad is in spotlight, and hence not just me, but a lot of people overseas actually view India with a negative light, and that's pretty sad.

Hope it changes soon.
