Ravana was a great personality, a great devotee of Lord Siva also, and materially his kingdom was very much advanced. It is said that Lanka was made of gold. Actually there were many palaces. And he was a very big Vedic scholar also. But one thing, that he was against Rama... And for this disqualification he is still described as asura, raksasa.
Since he possessed demoniac qualities from birth, naturally he became a great devotee of Lord siva
10 heads = great knowledge ..It represents that he was very knowledgeable, he was 10 times wise.
His 10 heads are actually symbolic...Ravana with his 10 heads actually depicts his knowledge spinning in all 10 directions( metaphor for his intelligence)
Since Ravana was born to a great Rishi Vishrava,he possessed a very thorough knowledge in every art and also master of music etc etc
He was a great scholar mastered the 4 vedas n 6 Shastras...which is why he is portrayed with 10 heads...
he was infact a benevolent king n a great warrior..His only problem is that he cannot keep his sences under control.
if any one cut off one of Ravan's heads, another one would grow in its place.
