The Whisper...

The wind howled as he walked down the lane towards what he thought was her home. The people gave him confused but warm smiles as they saw an unknown man in their locality. He was searching her for the past 7 years and finally he had found her. He knew she didn't want to meet him ever after what he had done to her. But he couldn't fight the urge to see her one last time.
He closed his eyes as he remembered her voice when he had called.
"Who is this?", she had asked.
"Z...Zoya...",was all he could blurt out.
And then there was silence. She did not say anything. She had understood who the person on the other line was. Maybe she didn't want to talk. but he had to.
"I want to meet you",Asad said.
A long silence followed.
"I don't think that is possible", she finally said.
"It will be".
She didn't have anything to say.
He didn't have anything either.
They both hung up.
He was finally going to meet her. His heart was going erratic. He looked sround.
'She lives here', he thought.
He gave one last glance at the paper chit in his hand and looked around to find her home. He saw a grey painted house around 50 meters in front of him. His pace quickened with each step he took. His eyes were sparkling with excitement as the thought of seeing her after so many years came into his mind. He took a deep breath as he rang the bell.
He heard the door click open and then silence. He opened his eyes.
She was there.
She was right in front of him.
She was'. She was looking beautiful.
She.. '.She'.was'
"Asad?",he heard her whisper breaking his chain of admiration.
He couldn't say anything. He couldn't breathe. He couldn't even stand properly! Hearing his name from her mouth gave him butterflies in his stomach. She seldom said that. He was used to being called Mr. Khan.
Finally, his thoughts gave him the strength to speak.
"Umm'Umm..Uh..",was all he could say.
Idiot!
Asad mentally slapped himself.
"Hie Zoo..Umm.. Miss .. umm..err' Zoya",he finally blurted out.
Her lips slightly curved into a smile as he stammered.
"Is my name so tough to say Asad?",she asked him as she ushered him inside.
Her smile sent shivers down his spine. It took him 7 long years to find her. When he told her he wanted to meet her she had stayed mum. He sat down on the sofa with Zoya on the other side. They looked at each other having nothing to say. His hard gaze was making her try hard not to blush. He couldn't look away. She had aged beautifully and gracefully. She looked just the same but a lot more pure, serene. She still had that long, dark column of waves which she wore in a pony-tail now. He saw her eyes finally catching his. Her eyes spoke volumes. They always did. But for some strange reason, he found pain in them today, a strange kind of pain. He wanted to crush her in his arms. He had let her go once and he had never regretted something more than that. But this time he was going to make her his forever.
"Zoya, I am sorry about..",he started to say.
"Don't", she said, suddenly feeling uneasy.
Asad knew she didn't want to hear anything about that night.
She had poured her heart out and what had he given her in return? Only pain. She had confessed her love for him. But he was too full of himself to accept that she was never a misfit for him. It took him too long to realise that he was the only who was actually a misfit for her. She was too good to be his. But by then, she had gone. She had left him.
"Do I mean nothing to you?",she ha dasked.
"No. You are a pain to me.Pata nahi aap kab meri zindagi se rukhsat hongi" ", was his reply.
He had not failed to see her tears as she ran to her room.
She had said she wanted to marry her. And what did he do? He mocked at her.
"I can't marry a girl like you", he had said.
The wall of misunderstandings created between them was too strong for him to look at her pained eyes, to see through her transparency, to see what he meant to her and what she meant to him.
A lot had happened after she left without a word. Najma had lost a friend. Dilshad had lost a daughter. And he.. a friend.. maybe a lot more than that. He had lost a part of himself. He had no one but himself to blame for it.
He was going to take Zoya back with him, to Bhopal, to his house, to tehir house. Only if she could forgive him for the pain he had caused.
It was his last chance, the only chance he had.
"Zoya.. Please let me",Asad said, breaking the ice.
Zoya still looked down. She had never felt more uncomfortable than now.
"Zoya, I just wanted to say I lo..",he said but stopped midway by the sound of running footsteps.
"Ammiii!",he heard a female voice as the small figure ran to Zoya and hugged her.
Ammi?
His smile faded as his face became pale.
She.. She had.. She had married?
