ummm guys, i m not sure about Kartikeya...but, ppl in my village say that ganesh was a student a BRIHASPATI...rather than his father...because, shiva wanted him to study under the guru of gods...n moreover, him learning under devguru makes more sense than him learning under his dad or mom coz he was to become d future king of ganas...kartikeya on the other hand was to become a warrior...n that too the best, so i guess he trained under his dad n mom only...m not sure about him but GANESH...100% sure he was a student of brihaspati!!!!

One question - who is the leader of the Ganas?

According to what most of us know, it's Ganesh.  But here is what Shiva Purana has to say, where it throws up an alternate leader:

After killing all the demons, lord Shiva lifted Andhak with his trident and hanged him between the earth and sky. Andhak remained there for a very long period of time, bearing the heat of the sun and the showers of rain. But he remained alive. Ultimately he had to take the refuge of Lord Shiva, to save his life. Lord Shiva became pleased by his eulogy and made him his 'Ganadhees' (leader of all the Ganas).

Andhak of course being the originally blind son of Mahadev/Parvati - the son created from the sweat drops when Parvati blindfolded Shiva w/ her hands.

So the question is - who is the leader of all the Ganas?  Is it Ganesh, or Andhak?  Or is it Nandi?

I don't know about Andhaka...

Ok this is not exactly a doubt, but does anyone have the ORIGINAL SHiva Purana? Like, either the Sanskrit original, or the exact translation?

Andhaka is not as popular as Ganesh. The name Ganesh, Ganadheesh, is because he was made their chief after he got the Elephant head.

Actually the Shiva Purana does say that Andhaka prayed to Brahma and regained his eyes. And he set his eyes on Parvati. So fierce battle. Lord SHiva defeats Andhaka. Andhaka says sorry. Shiva says, "Ok from now on you are a Shivagana." Oh, and it was in the fight between Andhaka and SHiva that Shukracharya got his name. Before he was just BHargava or Asuraguru I think.

I have an answer to your question No.1. This is a very interesting story, one of Lord Shiva's several leelas and set in a place called Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu.

There was once a lady belonging to the vaishya (trading / merchant) community. Her daughter, who was living in a nearby village was in advanced state of pregnancy and the news came to her that the daughter had developed labour pains. The mother immediately started her journey towards her daughter's house. But soon it started raining heavily and when the mother came to the banks of  Kaveri, the river was in a state of flood.

As many would be knowing, the River Kaveri is at its broadest in this region.

It was near impossible for the mother to cross the river. An ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, she prayed to the Great Lord for a miracle.

Meanwhile, the daughter, who was still waiting for her mother, fainted due to the severity of labour pains. But just before fainting, she was relieved to see her mother walking through the door and helping her through the delivery.

The next morning, when the rains subsided, the mother came rushing to the daughter's house, only to find that the daughter had already given birth. She apologized for not being present to help her daughter, but the daughter insisted that she (the mother) had indeed been present and it was she who had helped her through the delivery.

The mother was puzzled, since she had spent the night across the  river, unable to cross it. So who could it have been who came in the guise of  the mother?

No prizes for guessing the answer.

There is a temple for Lord Shiva here (in Tiruchirapalli) where He is known as Tayumavar (One who took the form of a mother). In Sanskrit, his name is Matrubhuteshwar.

Andhakasura was a demon born from Lord Shiva's sweat. Yeah, gross whatever.
OK, so do you remember one episode where Parvati puts her hands n Mahadev's eyes, and his third eye comes out? THAT should have been when they showed Andhakasura. WHen Parvati closed his eyes, Mahadev opened his third eye. Due to the heat generated, his sweat drops fell on the ground. And since Mahadev's normal eyes were closed, the sweat drops became a blind child. Parvati brought him up as her own son.
And now... HIranyaksha, the demon killed by Lord Varaha... This comes before his death ok?
So HIranyaksha prayed to Mahadev and asked him for a son. Mahadev promptly took Andhaka and gave it to HIranyaksha.
When both Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu died, Prahlada's other brothers (Anuhlada, Samhlada and Hlada) teased  A-ndhaka about his blindness. So Prahlada -told him to worship -L-o-rd -Brahma and ask him for boon. So Andhaka started Tapasya. In the meantime, Prahlada's brothers died in some Devasura war and Prahlada got Moksha, and his son Virochana was not yet king. So Lord Brahma appeared and restored Andhaka's sight. Andhaka asked him the boon of being killed ONLY if he lusted his mom. Brahma said, "Okay" and disappeared as usual.

Now Andhaka became very powerful and defeated the devas (once again, as usual) and decided to conquer Kailash. There he saw Parvati (his mom) and wanted to marry her. She said no.
Andhaka got furious and attacked Kailash. At that time Lord SHiva had gone somewhere (I think to fulfil some BHakta's wish). So Parvati along with the other deities fought Andhaka and other asuras. But like Raktabeeja, even his blood created more Andhakas. At that time Lord SHiva also arrived. So Parvati once again became Kali, and with the other Matrikas (Brahmani, Vaishnavi, Maheshwari, Kaumari, Indrani, etc) drank his blood while Lord SHiva held him aloft on the Trishul. So he stayed  in this way for many years. Between this time SHukracharya (Bhargava) was reviving other asuras by Sanjeevani, so Lord Shiva got very angry. He swallowed Bhargava and kept him in his stomach so that all asuras would remain dead. Bhargava saw the whole universe inside Mahadev's stomach. Afterwards Bhargava was freed from Shiva's stomach through his private organ (Shukra) and so he became SHukracharya.
At last Andhaka also saw light and understood everything. He then asked forgiveness and Lord SHiva said ok and made him a SHivagana.
Additional information from Matsya Purana:
The Matrikas meanwhile became very wild and bloodthirsty. So Lord Vishnu became Lord Narasimha and calmed the Matrikas with a Devi called Shushka Revati. Praising Narasimha, Lord SHiva composed the Narasimha Stotra.
