Just quoting from Wiki :

Bengali

Being one of the most spoken languages in the World, ranking 5th or 6th,[20] in 2009 elected representatives in both Bangladesh and the Indian states of West Bengal, Assam, and Tripura unanimously voted in resolutions calling for Bengali to be made an official UN language.[21] Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also put forward the proposal during her address to the 64th UN General Assembly Session, arguing that Bengali holds a "singular place as a symbol of people's faith in the power of languages to sustain cultures, and indeed the identity of nations".

No of Bengali speaking people are more in Bangladesh than West Bengal, Assam and

Tripura combined. One part of Uttarakhand speak Bengali. Huge no of Bengalis reside

in UK and USA.

Bengali language has a better chance of being official UN language than Hindi.

I am not a Bengali, but a Tamilian, but love to listen to Rabindra sangeet as I find it very soothing. I do not understand Bengali but I believe the language of music is universal. I used to live near a Bengali colony when I was in India, CR park and would look forward to visiting the numerous Durga Puja pandals during the Puja days. The colourful atmosphere which CR park offers during the Puja makes me feel so nostalgic. God I miss India so much...

Umaji, I occasionally use Bengali song. Just wanted to know, how many understands that.

Music is universal. Life of Pi song, lullaby is my fav, though I don't understand a single word.

I am a bengali living in the UK. After spending most of my life abroad, I am still a pure bengali in heart, soul & body.

Looking forward to the 'Poila Bashakh' utshab.
