Summer Affairs Chapter One
Kripa's head was spinning and throbbing at the same time. Once again the scene replayed in her head. The car spinning and then falling into a ditch. It was harsh and hurtful. Now as she was regaining conscience she was more than a hundred percent sure that she had broken something in her body for sure. Or perhaps she was waking up in heaven, because she couldn't be in hell. God wouldn't punish her after giving her so many pains in life. She brought her hand to her head and felt the bandage around it. Okay so she was still alive. She wouldn't be dead with a bandage. She slowly opened her eyes with a blurry and spinning vision. The bright light forced her to closer her eyes again, tighter than last time.
She let out another long breath followed by a moan due to her head throbbing again. The hand that was resting on her stomach fell to her side.
The object under her hand was hard and silky. She explored the object concluding it was someone's head. A head with rich, full, thick, silky, heavy hair.
Where am I?
She tried to get up but her back, as stiff as a baked chip. She feel back and found the head again. Her hand moved down the head to the shoulder. It was strong and she could predict, huge.
He had to be a man.
With her hand on his shoulder she shook him slightly, lightly. Waited for a few seconds to see if he would respond.
After maybe two minutes she shook him again. This time with more force. She took her hand back as he woke startled.
"Are you there?" She asked her head turned his way, his eyes closed
"Yes I am." His voice was strong and deep. "Are you okay now?" She felt his hand capture her wrist and hold it. "You looked terrible a few hours ago."
She gulped, where was she and for how long was she with this man?
"Um." She cleared her throat. "Are you a doctor?" She heard her voice husky and raspy. Then cleared her throat again. She knew she was getting sick after this accident.
"Not exactly. But I've had training in the profession. You seem fine." His voice was now soothing and rather charming. She wanted to open her eyes and see if this man was just as handsome as she was imagining him to be.
So she tried. But her face was deeply creased in tension from the light and she closed her lids again. "Can you please turn the lights off before I die? I need to open my eyes."
She heard his walk with a laugh to her request. Did I sound desperate, she wondered?
"Open your eyes miss." She opened her eyes in the dimmed lights. She lay on a large bed, in a lavish room. Maybe a hotel room?
"Where am I?" She turned her head and looked at the man. His back was facing her. He was extremely tall, maybe six feet even? He had broad and huge shoulders as she had suspected upon touching them. His arms were tanned mid way to his upper arm and then broke into a lighter color. He was dressed in a blue polo and jeans. The man had to be young and handsome.
She sighed to herself and then decided to ask him how he found her.
"How did you find me, Sir?" Sounded polite, she decided. "And, where am I?" Her voice was stressed and they both could hear the stress.
"You are at my house, Madam." She smiled at his French accent in 'Madam.' Definitely a charming man. "I was driving back home and I spotted your car taking those incredible turns. After you settled in that ditch I managed to get you out with some help and bought you here. You have been sleeping for almost six hours now."
"Six hours?!" She said in astonishment as she quickly sat up, cracking her back and then moaning in pain.
"Relax." He turned around and looked at her. "Relax, lay down." Her eyes were closed when he placed his hand on her shoulder and pushed her, gently, back down on the bed. "Don't kill yourself. And, don't worry."
She opened her eyes and looked at him.
Handsome, was definitely not the word for the blue eyed hunk. He was more than handsome. Absolutely exquisite. Royal even. His eyes were a deep dark blue, which did marvels when embedded against that tanned face. Her vision started to blur again and she felt like she was going to faint for the second time in a day.
"Are you ok?" He was clear and worried. She felt his hand rest on her arm.
"I- I can't see anything." She was breathless and panicked. She felt the throbbing continue in her head. Faster, more painful this time. "Am I going to die?" She asked clutching her hair that looked coffee dark in the dim lights.
He started laughing.
She opened her eyes and watched him throw his head back and laugh in glory. Her face replaced with a disgusted look. "I'm sorry." He said with a grin. He leaned down closer to her and placed his hand on her forehead in a comforting manner. "You're fine, Honey. Don't worry. You're just weak since you haven't eaten anything for god knows how long. I'm sorry about my laughing, it's just you sounded so hysterical." He ruffled her hair and stood up again.
Her anger replaced awe quickly.
"If you want-" he said a few moments later, "I can call the doctor and he can check you out."
"No. I'm fine." Her voice was louder and clearer this time, more confident perhaps. "I would like to go back home."
"Are you sure?" He turned around again.
"Yes." She swung her legs off the bed and stood up clutching her head again. She closed her eye to calm herself and her dizziness. When she thought she was under control she re-opened her eyes and walked to the door. "Thank you for saving my life. I don't know how to repay you. I don't even have any money." She lifted her shoulder in a half shrug, and then decided how stupid she just sounded. "Thanks again." She opened the door and walked away from the room.
"Miss!" He called running behind her. "Can I drop you somewhere? It will be hard to find a cab at this time, and your car is a wreck."
She swung around in horror. "My car!" She hollered. "Oh dear my car!" Her hand met her bandaged forehead in tension again. "Where is my car?"
"We got it towed. I'm sorry to say this but it's damaged to such an extent that buying a new car would be more sensible than repairing it."
Kripa sighed as she fell to the arm of the sofa. "I'm ruined." She looked at him in the dark again. "Is your offer still valid?"
He grinned. "Yes. I can drop you off."
"Trish!" The man yelled loudly.
"Yes Master." An old lady came running out of a room with her hands at her sides. "Oh I'm so glad to see your fine young lady. We were worried for you." She walked right to her and touched her face. "You looked awful when he bought you here."
The man walked to Trish's side and wrapped an arm around the old lady, maybe his Mothers age, slightly younger perhaps. "Trish I'll be back home in a few moments. She needs to go home. Can you please keep an eye on them?"
"Yes I can, sir. And, please be careful it's raining cats and dogs out there." She waived a hand and looked at the door with a worried look.
"Don't worry." The tall man leaned down and kissed the extremely short lady. "We'll be fine."
"Alright." Trish sighed, gave the man a quick hug and closed the door behind them.
Kripa was secure in her house an hour later. The man left despite the fact she offered him to stay until the rain slowed down, but he disagreed and left.
He was a nice man; she decided striping out of her cloths. She stepped into the hot water and laid down closing her eyes. But this was perhaps the first and last time they met.
"But Ma'am why can't I start right now? Today?" Kripa looked pleadingly at the middle aged lady before her.
She had short gray hair and her lips tinted with blood red lipstick. She smiled at the desperate young lady and waived her hand before her. "Oh come on Miss. Sharma. Enjoy the summer and join fresh in October. Once you start working that's it."
"Well," Kripa smiled trying to calm her nerves down. "I would enjoy if I had some money." She answered angrily between her teeth.
"Well is that why you want to join now?"
"Yes!"
The lady saw the hope in her again. She needed the job. "Well you can handle our question and answer section for a few months. We can introduce that with a new writer, until October. But it won't pay you enough still. I have one more option for you sweetheart."
"Which is?"
"Well." She swung her chair around and picked up her purse and started digging thought it in her lap. She turned back to Kripa with a card in her hand. "How would you like to become a Nanny for three girl?"
"You mean baby sit?" Kripa said in an unsure tone. "What's the job exactly?"
"Do you know Angad Khanna?"
"Hmmm." She tried to remember the name. "I think I've heard of him but never seen him."
"His three girls. Sana, sixteen. Sanjana, fourteen. Sia, seven. He needs someone who will live at the house with the three girls for the next four months or so. You will get a home, food, and a good pay. He's a mighty rich man and he'll give you anything to take care of his girls."
Kripa sat back in her chair, her bright brown eyes turning dark and frowning endlessly.
"It won't be bad Kripa." The old lady rose from her chair and walked to the coffee maker. "You won't have to pay rent for your apartment for a few months. You won't have to spend too much on food either. The man will give you everything for free and still pay you. You'll save a lot of money. And his girls are old enough except Sia, you'll do just fine. Trust me."
"Alright." She stood up and picked up the card. "I'll set an appointment with him."
"Good. And, I'll also let you do the question and answer column and you will be paid for that as well."
"Thank you." She turned and walked out the office.
So maybe things wouldn't be so bad after all.
A week later Kripa sat in the corridor of Angad Khanna's house. In front of his home office. The place was grand, but positively familiar.
"Ms. Sharma you can go in." Said a young lady, maybe in her late twenties. She was dressed in an elegant gray skirt and coat.
"Thank you." She turned nervously shocked at how well dressed the employees were at the place.
She took a deep breath and knocked on the open door. "May I come in?" She said looking at the man sitting turned to the ivory colored wall.
"Yes." With a swish his chair turned and he stood up, his eyes widened. "Hey it's you again. Come in."
She felt her heart drop to her stomach as she looked at the handsome man clearly for the first time. He was charming. Taller than she remembered him. Powerfully built with sharp features, a strong mouth. His hair was rich and full. She remembered how it felt under her hand. Thick, dark, and brown. His hair fell in a disarming disarray fashion to his collar and forehead. His full mouth continued to grin at her showing the strong white teeth.
She sighed within, when she realized this was the man she had to impress with her work.
But he was married with kids! Gosh! She hated it so much. But it was a job and since she knew he was married with kids she wouldn't be at all attracted towards the strikingly handsome man. Moreover he was a father of a sixteen year old and therefore absolutely had to be in his late forties. She couldn't possibly fall in love or in that matter be even attracted to a man who was almost fifteen years maybe twenty years older to her. The thought disgusted her.
So in the end everything would be fine. By September everything would be over and she would never see this man again. She smiled nervously to comfort herself.
