Countless feminist scholars and activists have spent their lives championing women's rights and there is a lot of literature available that addresses in great depth topics such as:

  • "image": how women are put on a pedestal in literature and movies (within South Asia, but also around the world) and how this is instrumental in societal disciplining of women and how it allows the case for mistreating women who don't live up to the ideal image
  • "marriage/live-ins": the patriarchal family structure, monogamy, polyamoury
  • women at work, the "double shift," attitudes towards women superiors
  • social control over women's sexuality, especially over the full range through which we want to freely express our sexuality in ways that are safe for us without it being policed by prudish attitudes
  • critique of heteronormativity or hetero conceptions of sex/love/life as universally appealing
  • the false dichotomy of "gender vs. sex"
  • violence against women, including sexual violence
  • body image
  • representations of women (esp women's "docility") in media
  • autonomous control over our bodies (including abortion)
  • patriarchal discourses of parenting/motherhood
etc.

Feminism is not a bad word. It represents:

  1. A historical project that's seeking equality for all (including women of colour, queer women, trans women, differently abled women)
  2. A form of social justice
  3. A body of knowledge with diverse perspectives

It's all there for you as a resource, people of India forums/debate mansion. And it is related to all the topics you all keep discussing. It's yours to look up and read, critique and what not.

Cheers.

I appreciate you sentiments however

1) What is that we are debating here?

2) What do you mean by app? app as in android or apple application?

Please be a little more clear.

It's not a debate. But it pertains to several debates happening here, so it's relevant. I didn't have anywhere else to post it, and I didn't want to spam and individually post it in a dozen threads.

Well it's not an actual app. It was just a title to get attention. What I was trying to say was that there is no need to reinvent the wheel on some of these subjects, and that there are resources already available that help further the debate, rather than always start at ground zero.

So basically you are saying if anyone starts a debate on such topics then it should not be from scratch but as an addition to something that has been discussed already or should be related to views that are already there or should be supplemented with resources already available?

Fair enough..

^ In particular about gender. It comes up a lot, and I don't think we need to go around circles as much as we do.

There are a lot of assumptions that are insulting. I don't even want to go into that thread about the image of women, for example. If we don't have a fundamental analysis of patriarchy, we can't really talk about gender in a way that is comprehensive and meaningful.

We owe it to ourselves to talk about things with a certain level of responsibility, and our starting points need to be rooted in reality, in real trends and patterns that we see in the world. And we have to acknowledge power relations in the world. Feminism is an analysis of power relations with respect to gender.

Its all part of life. lol. We have a filteration plant in brain. We can filter the noise and address the point that someone is trying to make or just disregard the whole input. What we cannot do is make all change. Anyway good points.

If women expect freedom,..women should stop using the Gandhian methods...she will not fight with men directly.. her fight will be indirect, it will be feminine... She will cry and weep. She will not hit men, she will hit herself, and through hitting herself, through crying and weeping, through using these Gandhian methods, she will dominate you...if you make somebody a slave you will be reduced to slavery ultimately..it's created women itself...at last she can't remain free... If you want to remain free, give freedom to others.. that's the only way to be free...

Feminism is not bad...have you noted one point?...Buddha and Jesus Christ,Krishna  that they look feminine, that they are womanish... Buddha certainly looks feminine...Whenever a man moves into the heart, something in him goes feminine... He becomes more round, more soft, more vulnerable...The future belongs to women, fighting with men is waste of time and women may lose something which is valuable thats the beauty of femininity..Smile

Do you feel that women are hiding behind the word feminism?
