- Affection is an emotion or a feeling
- Romantic affection is a sub-type of affection
- Eyecandy, crush, like, love are basically diffrent grades of  romantic affection.
- Love is the highest grade.
Now what makes these different? Its not mathematical but I believe with time and under different circumstances if two people manage to maintain the romantic affection then the grade increases and finally we can claim its love. What is that is that seprates love from less serious forms?
- more intense affection
- interest
- sincerity
- lack of conditions
As you move on from eyecandy to love you will be less conditional, more sincere, more interested, more affectionate.
I have answered it in different context. My own. To answer you I believe as you move towards love its get less conditional and true love is unconditional.

Good question Aarya. It could be because they know that the  child is theirs for good or worse. Given enough time one may get to love ones spouse too to that extent. Perhaps it is the bonding that  takes time to develop in the later case.

Some people don't love their children at all - they disown their children for not conforming to their ideals, they hurt and beat their children. Where's the love?

I think one of the purest or highest forms of love one can have are between parent and child, but there are plenty of parents who don't care about their kids and also vice versa.
