Bollywood review: 'Race2' just doesn't make the cut

A film about good lookers who journey to various European cities without any real purpose makes for an exhausting watch

It's a race, we are told, on numerous occasions, by the two leading heroes and their two gorgeous sidekicks, almost trying to justify why they've taken two-hours-and-thirty-minutes of our lives. Yet, there's never a real sense of what they are racing for. Time, money, babes, or cars?

There's no urgency in their actions, or dance moves, just pure indulgence in their own chiselled bodies, designer wardrobes, swanky cars and a journey that takes them to several European cities.

On many levels, a movie that's all fluff and no stuff can be quite exhausting. And, 'Race2' is just that.

It's just a pompous wannabe-thriller that is devoid of any logic.

While its predecessor, the original 'Race', had shown some promise and glimpse of a good plot, 'Race2' steers away from any such attempts, and instead focuses on good looks and charm.

Director duo Abbas-Mastan's 'Race2' sees Ranveer Singh, the winner of the first 'Race', return to strip the cunning Armaan Malik of his riches. His reasons are revealed over time when they finally lock horns atop a crashing flight.

The two – one a street-fighter who flexed his muscles and became rich, and the other an old suave fighter, who continues to double-cross and win – fill all their frames by grimacing and plotting against the other.

But that is not before we are an-hour-and-a-half into the movie. Till then, they are busy seducing their super-hot chicks, showing off their posh cars and designer suits, walking in slow-motion to blaring background score and swaying to many dance tracks.

It almost makes us wonder if it's a dance title that the two are vying for. That would've been more meaningful than the story churned out by writer Shiraz Ahmed.

He uses every Hollywood trick in the trade, yet shamelessly claims, in a dialogue no less, that his final feat has not been attempted in international movies.

He brings in the casino with its rich, sly owners, card games with its cunning winners, bloodied fight clubs, even a history lesson and a stolen treasure.

Even the lines by Kiran Kotrial aren't clever, and border on inane puns and PJs.

The narrative is botched and inconsistent. A case in point is the placing of a group dance, with all the actors gyrating to a remixed version of the original 'Race' soundtrack, bang in the middle of the thriller.

Saif Ali Khan as the stylish Ranveer is rather tiresome. He lacks charm, wit and acting versatility, and he's got the Botox jabs and an ageing body to blame. Although he attempts to give Ranveer a gripping edge, he's left with more dance moves than action sequences to show off.

He's often distracted by the women who turn up in itsy-bitsy clothes and croon to some funky songs.

Most unforgivable is his decision to expose his 'Kareena' tattoo. Surely, actors need to be taught to keep their real life separate from their reel image.

John Abraham, on the other hand, is far from menacing as Armaan Malik. There's a hint of his angst in the bloody fight sequence, but apart from that, his ruthlessness is often concealed. He does try though, but his indifference in the character makes it tough for us to take him seriously.

The leggy Deepika Padukone and super-toned Jacqueline Fernandes do what they are supposed to – look smoking hot. Although Deepika's Alina might've appeared more powerful on paper, it's Jacky's Omisha that's more layered in real.

Anil Kapoor is cracking as the fruit-indulging Robert D'Costa and shares some silly moments with his dim-witted assistant Cherry. It's only their link-up, in the end, that's quite disturbing, but it's hard to take them seriously.

On the whole, this is just a lazy sequel of a famed potboiler that can be watched at home… on a (borrowed) DVD.

Race 2 First Day Box Office Collections

Race 2Race 2 opened to a excellent response at the box office on Friday. The film performed well at both single screens/multiplexes and collected Rs 14.5 crore on it's first day, which is a opening record for all actors.

For Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone, Cocktail (11 cr) was their highest opener so far. While Housefull 2 (Rs 13 cr) was the biggest opener for John Abraham andJacqueline Fernandes. It's also a record for an Abbas-Mustan film.

With Saturday being a holiday for Republic day, a jump of 5-10% would result in second day collections of around 15-16 crore. The growth in business is unlikely to be huge, as the reports are mixed and Friday was also a national holiday for Id-E-Milad.

Race 2 Movie Review. Guest Post

Here is a Guest Post of Race 2 Movie Review.

The trend of making sequels of successful films is running in full swing in B-Town and the latest offering in our hand RACE 2 (2013) is a sequel to a very successful and popular film RACE (2008). Till date Race is director duo Abbas Mustan's most successful film and also Saif Ali Khan's one of the bigger hits. With John Abraham coming on the board, Race 2 hit the theatres with some superb hype around it.

Making a sequel to a successful suspense thriller is a big risk because it is very difficult to create the same kind of impact plus the audience this time become smarter. So in short a maker needs to think a step ahead to beat the audience again at this game. This is where Race 2 does not pass the test. The test to shock the audience all over again. Race 2 is much more predictable than its predecessor. But this doesn't mean that the battle is lost completely. Race 2 is high on style and its first half is pretty sleek, exciting and to the point. Saif Ali Khan's character Ranvir Singh is in full swing in the first half and as John calls him in the movie - 'Hero' is without any doubt is THE HERO of the movie. Ranvir's dialogues and his sense of humour is something to look out for. Just like Race, Race 2 dips considerably in the second half. It's predictable and sluggishly directed. All the four songs in the movie work as irritants as they just pop out of nowhere and puts the break not required otherwise. The much hyped fight sequence of John with a professional fighter is poorly executed. Deepika Padukone and Jacqueline Fernandez add on the glamour quotient but just that no more no less.

Saif Ali Khan delivers a stylish performance. No one can play the role of Ranvir better than him. He's the highlight of the film. John is good but his role is not as interesting as of Akshaye Khanna in Race. Deepika and Jacqueline have limited to zero scope to showcase their acting talent. Anil Kapoor and Ameesha Patel both have poorly written roles so no point commenting on their performances.

Race 2 disappoints the most when it comes to its music. Music was the highlight of Race and Race 2's music is nowhere near it. "Pehli nazar main kaisa jaadu kar diya" and "Touch me touch me" both became a rage that time and on the contrary no song in this film could make an impact of that level. "Lat lag gayi"is the pick of the lot. More so all the songs are horribly placed in the movie.

Many people would want to know that whether Race 2 is better than its prequel? There is no straight answer to this question. The first half of Race 2 is definitely worth watching and is even better than Race but second half, predictable plot and music spoils the fun big time. I wish Shiraz Ahmed the story writer had something more exciting for us. Ravi Yadav's cinematography is sleek.

Watch it for its well directed, racy first half and Saif Ali Khan.

2.5 stars

Okay, so I watched it... and I am not sure how I feel about it. It wasn't as bad as the reviews are saying, but yes there are some bits that made me go W*F.

- Anil Kapoor & Ameesha Patel's dirty jokes and dialogues
- The 'Allah Duhai' song literally popping out of nowhere
- How "high-tech" the movie tried to be - cards with censors that pops up on DP's sunglasses, and her having some kinda app on her phone that changes cards? Whaaat?
- A car on a plane. Literally also, popping out of nowhere.
- The entire plane sequence was dumb.. especially how Armaan & Omisha exit the plane.. like really, she holds onto him with one hand.. it just looked ridiculous
- Actually, how Deepika & Saif escaped that plane was quite funny as well
- These people are rich and have all the latest gadgets.. yet the photoshopped pictures of Bipasha and Jacqueline were literally horrendous. Did Omisha think Ranveer will actually think those photos were real? I mean come on, hire a better photoshopper next time maybe (even though that wouldn't have helped since he knew how the real Tanya looked like already)
- Some of the sequences were too extreme and OTT
- The guy at the end who takes all of Armaan's money.. and the way he says from now on, "everything of yours is mine.. even your girlfriend" and how Omisha just went up to him, I got really angered. Yeah, I know, they tried to show how Omisha really didn't love Armaan and was there for his money. At the same time, the way the guy said the dialogue.. after mentioning money, casinos, houses, cars, he refers to Omisha.. it's like she is supposed to some type of object. -__-

... I am trying to think of some stuff that stood out as being good but I can't.

I read some reviews where they said the girls had nothing to do except look pretty. I didn't feel like it. I felt like both Elena (sp?) and Omisha were important characters. They might not have had as much to do as the two main guys, but I wouldn't call them flowerpots. They were involved enough in the plot & its twists, and had enough screentime. I agree with divine.dobrev, the two girls were there as much as Bipasha & Katrina were in the first Race.

Acting wise, I found everyone alright. John was good in some scenes, and really bad in others. Deepika wasn't bad.. but compared to Cocktail, she really didn't have much scope here. This girl gives really good expressions though. Jacqueline.. I have no feelings towards her, plus her voice was dubbed so whatever. Saif was his usual self. I thought he was good.

I'd give it a 3/5 I guess. It was stupid at times, but it had some good twists and I was entertained. Liked the first Race better though! :)
