CHAPTER 5
What?" I asked, acting like I didn't know what she was talking about.
"I know that KD's you ex-boyfriend. Why didn't you tell me?" Panchi demanded.
"He told you?" I was shocked.
"Yeah, and now I'm waiting for answers from you, missy."
"Ok, fine, yes, KD is my ex," I confirmed with a sick feeling in my stomach.
"Actually, I don't care about that. No, erase that, I do care about that. What I really wanna know is why you didn't tell me."
"Well, you seemed to like him, and I didn't want to, you know, ruin it," My voice trailed off.
Panchi shook her head and laughed, "Promise me that we'll be truthful about everything, starting now."
"Of course."
"So, remember when I told you I didn't like Ranveer anymore?" She lay down on the couch and stared at the ceiling.
"Yeah," I waited for her to continue. "Well, truth is, he liked you." I didn't reply until I realized what she meant, "Oh my god, I'm sorry, Panchi."
"It's not your fault," She sat up and looked at me. But I could tell she was hurt.
"You'll find other guys."
"I know I will," She suddenly smiled, "What about you?"
"So will I," But my voice didn't sound so sure.
"Oh my gosh, you guys are killing me!" Panchi complained, "Why don't you guys just admit that you still love each other and move on!"
"It would work," I started, "If that was actually true."
She looked at me right in the eye and said, "Tell me the truth, Kiya, do you still like him?"
"No," I said as I looked away.
"You don't sound so sure," Panchi hinted. "Come on, Kiya! Really, why are you both so complicated?"
"Sorry to disappoint you, but KD doesn't feel that way anymore," I said coolly.
"Actually, remember my car ride with him? He thinks you've moved on."
I looked up. "Can we just talk about something else?"
Panchi was silent. Then she sighed. "You guys are a pain, you know." But she let the subject drop.

The next morning, KD was waiting for me at my locker.
"So, we never decided on a job."
"Are you any good at baby-sitting?" I said as I put my stuff away in my locker.
"No, remember?" I did remember. Two years ago, he tried and it ended up in a disaster.
"Well, too bad."
"Hey, don't be so cold, honey," He smiled.
"You're enjoying this aren't you?" KD started walking with me towards first period.
"Just like how it used to be," He whispered.
"So... you told Panchi."
"I thought best friends tell each other everything."
I was just about to respond when the bell rang. Dang it. When class ended, KD was the first one to walk out, so I didn't get the chance to reply back to what he had said. I was surprised to find Ranveer waiting for me. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised.
"You didn't forget you still owe me, right?" He smiled as we started walking.
"Ok, so what do you want?" I saw KD talking to Panchi as we passed by. I thought Panchi said she didn't like him.
"So, you're pretty close friends with Panchi?" He looked really embarrassed.
"Yeah...?" I waited for him to continue. But of course, the bell always ruins everything.
"Tell you later," He said and hurried off to his seat. He actually looked kind of glad he didn't say it. I rolled my eyes. Guys!
Juhi walked over to me to work on our project. Seriously, I swear the teachers were trying to kill us with all these projects.
"So, you're going to the Spring Fest right?" She asked.
"Spring Fest?" I asked, then my eyes widened, "Oh my god, it's already Spring Fest?"
"OMG! You forgot?" Juhi pretended to be shocked.
The Spring Fest was your average school dance. Except, it wasn't totally average. It was the biggest dance of the year, excluding Prom.
"I'm probably not going," I said as I shook my head.
"Why not? Couldn't find a date?" Juhi teased.
"I didn't have a date last time either."
"Exactly. And you still went." Dang it.
"Sorry, Juhi, I don't really have time this year."
"Or is it just because you're waiting for a special someone to ask you?" Juhi smiled.
"Panchi?" I asked and she nodded. "Really, is she going to tell the whole school?
What was between me and KD is over."
"No one's gonna believe you," Juhi warned. "It's obvious you guys just don't wanna admit your feelings towards each other." I finally decided to give up. She wasn't going to believe me, just like Panchi hadn't.
What I dreaded the most came next.
When class started, Mrs. Khan handed us a packet, which had choices of houses, and all that.
"One partner will pick a card from this hat, which will tell you both of your jobs, wages, and number of family members." When she came to us, she held out the hat and KD reached in.
"Let me see," I said right after he pulled a card out.
"Hahaha, you? A doctor? Please, you can't even look at your own blood," KD laughed.
I wrestled him until I got the card. I looked at it. "Ugh. How come you get to be a lawyer?" Then I smiled, "Atleast I earn more money than you."
"It's just there to make you feel better."KD replied
"Sure," I rolled my eyes then looked at it again, "Four kids? Are you serious?"
"Well, we sure had fun," He grinned. I smacked him on the arm.
"Let's just hurry up and complete this." I said, which was a mistake. We spent the rest of class arguing about which house was better.
"You are impossible!" I said when we heard the bell rang.
"Hey, you're the one with no common sense."
"Already having your marriage fight?" Mayuri, a girl from our class teased as she walked by.
"Shut up, Mayuri." She stuck out her tongue and walked away.
"So, when's the babysitting job?" KD asked as we started making our way towards my, or rather, our next class.
"Tomorrow."
"And are you sure it's ok with the parents? I know a lot of them don't like having the boyfriend around," KD smirked. "You're not my boyfriend, so I'm sure it'll be fine."
"You're right. Husbands are fine."
"You have no idea how much I wanna slap you right now," I couldn't help but smile.

I waved goodbye to Panchi as she dropped me off and drove away. I walked up to my door and before I could even touch the door knob, someone opened it. I was surprised to see Anya on the other side.
"Project," She said simply, and took another bite out of her apple. My eyes widened, "Oh crap!"
"I turned it in for you."
"You did?"
"Hey, don't act so surprised," Anya replied, "That's what I'm here for."
"Don't you have a practice or something?" I asked her as I followed her in.
"Nope and I thought its high time I did something for my sis!"
"Sorry, I'm just so used to you-"
"Doing something extra?" Anya interrupted, "Yeah, I realized how you must have felt."
I didn't reply right away. "Is this a joke?" I looked around for any signs of hidden cameras.
She rolled her eyes. "What? Who said I can't be nice?"
"No, I didn't mean it like that ..."
"It's fine," She said and smiled. "So, Spring Fest?"
"Can't go this year."
"What?! You're kidding me! Why? Don't have a date?"
That's exactly what Juhi said, except in different words. "Why does everyone just automatically assume that?"
"Waiting for a special someone to ask you?" Anya asked. Here we go again...
