There's the couch, dude!

By Piali Dasgupta, TNN | Jul 21, 2007, 12.00 AM IST

Bobby Darling has been accused of and booked for sexually harassing upcoming model Surjeet Jagdish Singh. BT finds out how vulnerable men in the glam industry are.
Earlier it was almost always naive actresses being exploited by the biggies that made headlines. Not anymore. Now, it's men in the industry who find themselves at the receiving end of indecent proposals.

While not complying with these requests may damage the prospects of struggling actors, some men in the industry are now choosing to retaliate rather than keep these matters under wraps. Actor Priyanshu Chatterjee, who was targeted a few years ago, says men have always been victimised but it's only now that it's coming out in the open. "I was asked for a sexual favour by this man who promised me a film in return. But I didn't believe him, and was right in doing so, since the film wasn't made," he says.

Meanwhile, Bobby Darling, who denies the existence of the casting couch, rubbishes the allegations against him. He says, "Unlike me, Surjeet Jagdish Singh is yet to come out of the closet. I didn't promise him any roles since I'm no Shah Rukh Khan; I'm still struggling in the industry. Singh had made plans to grab media attention by publicly smooching me while pretending to be drunk. I didn't go along with his plan. That's when he made charges against me to vent his grievances. He's six feet tall, well-built ; how can I molest him? asks Bobby.

If industry sources are to be believed, it's not just men who demand sexual favours from other men. Women directors are known to make advances to and take undue advantage of struggling actors. Publicist Dale Bhagwagar says, "I know of this woman director who calls actors working for her to her house at unearthly hours and asks them to fondle her. Model Aryan Vaid was invited to the casting couch when he was struggling for work. Men are under more pressure since sometimes they have to return sexual favours to influential people of the same sex, totally against their will."

Wannabe actors hailing from small towns or non- filmi backgrounds are the usual targets. However, even established actors looking for better banners are not spared, and some are willing to go to any length to make it big. Model-turned-actor Bikram Saluja believes exploitation takes place everywhere. "I agree there's a casting couch in this industry, but I've not fallen prey to it. There are sharks out there, but it depends on whether the individual wants to be hunted or not. Doing a sexual favour is no less heinous than asking for one," he says.

Model Muzammil Ibrahim, who's making his foray into Bollywood with Pooja Bhatt's Dhoka, says these offers are made to people who go looking for them. "In my case, it was smooth sailing after winning the Mr India title. I didn't have to hunt for work; it came to me. It's one's circumstances that make one vulnerable. And innocent people do get carried away," he says.

Speaking of favours, while it's cash that has to be offered to the agents in the industry who often make false promises to innocent newcomers, it's sex that sells with filmmakers. Industry sources also reveal that around 15 per cent of the men in the industry don't have conventional sexual preferences, thereby making the men all the more vulnerable.

Excerpts from Mohan Deeps's interview...

Though on the wrong side of fifty - born on October 10, 1952 - Rekha still yearns for a man in her life like a girl in her teens and twenties.  Her involvement with the men in her life Mukesh Aggarwal and Amitabh has almost bordered on obsession. Even her interest in grooming herself and fighting the aging process is obsessive.

Though there are enough stories about studs organised for her (I got to know a lot when I wrote Eurekha, a book on her private life) and also tales about her inclination towards same sex, corroborated by eye witness accounts in my book, Rekha is a lonely figure. In the recent years, she has even spent her birthday with her all-female staff even as they privately sympathize with her.
Is it loneliness or insecurity in life, a childhood where her parents did not have enough time for her, a lost childhood, which has left her seeking men who could be like a father figure? Is the insecurity also the reason behind her desire to overdress in an attempt to fulfil emotional needs through material and cosmetic means?

The glamorous actress remains an enigma to legions of fans all over the world.

Hmmm. Rekha borders on delusional if you ask me!

But NO-ONE should have to spend time alone on their birthday Ouch, That made me sad for her.

She is one of the most beautiful women but i wonder why she is completely OBSESSED with AB Sr!! He obviously will never own up to their relationship in public!

True... She has had a very disturbed life. A tumultous childhood too...

We recount her troubled relationship with her father, the famous actor Gemini Ganesan

Rekha

Today's generation looks up to Rekha as their inspiration. Vidya Balan addresses her as her mentor and Priyanka Chopra wishes to be like her. But back then, not many people were Rekha's fans. Behind that divine smile and those mysterious eyes, lies a painful past; Rekha simply had no childhood and was forced to grow up too soon. Young, innocent and lost, she entered the industry, fell prey to scandal and subsequently steeled herself to emerge as a major force to reckon with.
THE CLANDESTINE MARRIAGE
The already married South Indian actor, Gemini Ganesan, met a beautiful actress Pushpavalli on the sets of Miss Malini in 1947. After a few cordial meetings, he fell deeply in love with Pushpavalli. It was hard for Mr Ganesan to face his family and apparently, the two eventually decided to have a secret wedding at Tirupati.
THE BIRTH OF BHANUREKHA GANESAN

In 1954, Gemini Ganesan and Pushpavalli were blessed with a small bundle of joy whom they named Bhanurekha, now known as Rekha. But destiny had other plans for Rekha. Rumours spread like wildfire that she was the Gemini Ganesan's illegitimate child. Very few people knew that he had secretly married Pushpavalli as he hadn't left his first wife, Alamelu.
ALMOST FATHER-LESS REKHA

Gemini and Pushpavalli had three more children. Bhanurekha being the eldest was a child who had every right to grow up as a star kid. But just then, news of Gemini and Pushpavalli breaking up came about. Allegedly, the young Rekha was thus deprived of her father's love. Rumour has it that Gemini Ganesan did not acknowledge Rekha or his other kids from Pushpavalli when they were children. Pushpavalli, on her part, tried to make a happy home for her children, playing mother and father to them. Bhanurekha was very attached to her mother as she was the only parent she knew. At the same time, it also made her an introvert, who was happy to live in her own world.
An isolated childhood
The media, even back then, played a very important role in celebrities' lives. Rekha was just 10 years old when her father was in the limelight again for his alleged affair with Telugu actress Savitri. Rekha, hurt by this news, receded further into a shell. She transformed herself into a tomboy as a teenager, climbing trees being one of her favourite pastimes! She didn't interact with many of her classmates at school, preferring to spend time on her own in the school chapel.
Forced into acting

In the late '60s, the south Indian industry witnessed more Gemini-Savitri movies and the couple became a hit pair onscreen. This was also the time Rekha's mother Pushpavalli, went through a patch of ill health. She could not work further to support her family and her children. Rekha, being the eldest, had no option but to drop out of school when she was 14 years old to financially support her family. Rekha chose to embrace acting and became the only one in the family to follow in her parents' footsteps, not by choice but by circumstance. Sources say that she had no interest in acting and was basically forced to work. This was definitely one of the most difficult periods of her life. The big, bad industry
Rekha, despite being a star kid, did not enjoy the perks that came along with being who she was. Normally, when a celebrity child decides on acting as a career and enters the film industry, things come easy. Producers are more than happy to cast a new face and 10 scripts arrive at once, but it was not the same for her. After a brush with south Indian films, Rekha, then still a teenager, facing one hurdle after the other, decided to give Bollywood a shot.
She entered the Hindi film industry when she was only 14 years old. This was one of the most difficult times of her life as she could not speak Hindi, struggled to communicate with her co-workers and constantly missed her mother, who was critically ill and therefore not by her side at the time. She was also called fat, ugly and stout. Poorly styled and awkward, her debut in Sawan Bhadon (which turned out to be a huge hit) was criticised by the audience and the critics.
