Matru ki Bijlee Ka Mandola recovers costs, becomes Bhardwaj's biggest film

Published: Friday, Jan 18, 2013, 19:05 IST
Agency: IANS

Matru ki Bijlee Ka Mandola (MKBKM), a political satire with a dollop of humour, may not have got an overwhelming response but it has recovered its costs by collecting Rs41.15 crore worldwide in the first week of its release, making it Vishal Bhardwaj's biggest film yet.

Fox Star Studios and VB Pictures made Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola for Rs33 crore. It has garnered Rs33.15 crore net at the domestic box office and Rs8 crore from the overseas market. The revenues from TV, Music and Home Video further boosted its profit, said a statement.

Criticism notwithstanding, Bhardwaj is happy and said: "This is my biggest opening and appreciation is coming from a lot of people. But I am really happy and relieved about the fact that I am able to make the kind of movie that I want to make and still have a profitable film. "

Critics have lauded Pankaj Kapur's performance in the film, which also sees superb acting by Shabana Azmi. The two veterans are ably supported by Imran Khan, Anushka Sharma and Arya Babbar.

Pritish Nandy calls it a "wicked wit" and added that Pankaj Kapur has proved again "his peerless acting prowess".

Vijay Singh, CEO FoxStar Studios, feels MKBKM has "polarised audiences and is testimony to the changing audience preferences…"

A satirical commentary on the country's social system, MKBKMstory takes place in a small town in Haryana.

"It has certainly appealed to the multiplex audiences. As there was no competition, people have lapped it up," said Delhi-based distributor Joginder Mahajan.

Even Amitabh Bachchan praised Bhardwaj's endeavour to target corruption in the society using satire as a medium to talk to the masses, and tweeted: "A land issue much like Singur, rich and poor divide, communism of takes, anti-alcohol, love triangle (DDLJ style), politics - all portrayed in a manner not unknown to us, yet unknown ….a composite satire, if ever satires could be composite."

For Anurag Kashyap Matru... is "the most kickass funny, intelligent and relevant film of our times".

Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola Second Weekend Box Office Collection. Hit or Flop?

Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola has collected around 5.1 crore nett all India in its 2nd Weekend at the box office as per early estimates. MKBKM showed a jump of 45% on 2nd Sunday from 2nd Saturday. MKBKM collected around 1.57 crore on 2nd Saturday and further 2.23 crore on 2nd Sunday. Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola total collection after 10 days is estimated at 36.1 crore nett.

MKBKM has shown decent jump on second weekend. But problem is collection started on lower end from 2nd Friday. Still a collection of 5+ crore nett in 2nd weekend is much better after mediocre first week. MKBKM is made on a budget (Film Cost - 30 crore + Marketing - 8-10 crore) of around 38-40 crore. Being a theatrical hit is out of question as it needs around Distributor Share of 38-40 crore from India and Overseas. At max it will earn around 28 crore theatrically (DS of India + Overseas). As for amount recovery, after all the satellite, music and other deduction, it still need around 18-20 crore from theaters. That means a nett collection of 36-40 crore nett and after that will be profits. As per early trends MKBKM lifetime collection is heading towards 40 crore nett mark. That means if all options of recovery is taken into account Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola will just break even. Hence its verdict by early trend is BelowAverage to Average.

Collection Breakup -

1st Week - 31 cr nett.
2nd Friday - 1.3 cr nett.
2nd Saturday - 1.57 cr nett.
2nd Sunday - 2.23 cr nett (Estimates)

Total - 36.1 cr nett.
