Suicide: Who is responsible? Individual/society

I'd invite members here to discuss and debate, who is responsible for suicide? The individual himself? Or the family/society which makes him/her vulnerable to commit suicide?/Compels him/her to contemplate taking this step?

What's the trigger, the cause of suicide? On whom does the onus primarily lie?Edited by Skepblun - 11 years ago

Suicides take place owing to a variety of reasons. Some of them may seem trivial to the casual onlooker. Some, on the other hand, may seem grave enough to justify the decision of self-destruction. There can't, however, be any agreement among individuals/communities as to what must qualify as definitively a reason to commit suicide. Some people are strong mentally and can withstand a lot. While even a relatively minor issue might provoke one to take their own life. The most deciding factor here is the coping power of the person concerned. So, IMO, it is the individual.

I feel like I should say society but the fact is that the individual is responsible for their own well being. Nobody cares. This is a fact taught to everyone by life. Life goes on as if nothing has happened because people don't care about your problems unless it happens to them. Im not saying neither is at fault. Just that the individual is responsible. If a person feels like might hurt themselves they should get help as soon as possible because when people face problems that are out of their hands (problems that society enforces upon them) they feel like suicide is their only choice. Regardless it is just a choice which means there are many others they could take. I am not saying that the problems they face are small, I am trying to say that suicide is not the choice individuals should make lest they regret it. But it will be too late for that.

Thanks for responses.

But isn't society and family also at fault for leading people to believe that social approval or external achievements/factors are more important than the individual? The web of expectations and wants is fostered by society/family mainly. Doesn't it make individual feel he has less to value in himself alone and that his value depends on how he fares on scales of success/happiness as devised by society? Is an individual's life not spent adhering to social norms and living by what's culturally sanctioned?

Where does individual derive confidence from? Within himself or social reinforcement?

When a person commits suicide is he running away from himself or running from society?

Here is a jilted lover who committed suicide. In this case most would say it is the individual. Some people are just too emo.

But proper understanding and education about about life and living could help and that is where the Education system and religion comes in.

KOTA KINABALU - A Frenchman who was believed to have been jilted by his girlfriend during a holiday visit to Sabah was found dead in a hotel washroom in Sandakan.

The 29-year-old man, Clement Maxime Benjamin Barr, was believed to have committed suicide after his girlfriend left him in Sandakan and flew to Kota Kinabalu after they visited the Sukau area in Kinabatangan town.

The man was found with cuts on his wrists and throat by a hotel staff member who went to check on him after he failed to come out of the washroom about two hours after going in.

Clement from Amiens, France, was also believed to have left a note in French taking full responsibility for his actions in the 7.30pm on Monday.

Sandakan district deputy police chief Supt Fadzil Mohd Ali said that they believed this was a suicide and had classified it as sudden death.

The body was sent to the Duchess of Kent Hospital for a post-mortem.

He said the French Embassy would take responsibility of the body after the post-mortem was completed.

A blade was also recovered from the bathroom while the suicide note and some cash were found on his bed in his room on the second floor of the hotel. The couple had arrived in Sabah earlier this week and checked into the hotel on Friday.

They went to Sukau on Sunday and checked into the hotel again upon returning to Sandakan on Monday but the girlfriend left for Kota Kinabalu.

Those with problems in Penang are advised to

The onus is primarily on family and then the society.

It cannot be avoided. Social humans (in varying degrees) will always seek approval, acceptance, admiration from the people surrounding them. Society will always condition them into embracing certain beliefs/morals. And it is not always the feeling of shame or fear of social ostracism that leads one to commit suicide. The reasons behind suicides are myriad and diverse. Often it is caused by a state of dissociation induced by mental illness. What I am trying to say is that the personal factor is the most important in this regard. Every person has a limit upto which they can endure suffering. When that limit is crossed, anything can happen. Now, this limit is different for each one of us. We can have a separate discussion on why some people have more coping power than others.

Ideally, confidence should come from within, rather than from what one's family or peers think/say about them. It would require super-human effort to achieve that in reality, IMHO.
When a person commits suicide is he running away from himself or running from society?

Depends on specific circumstances.

A very interesting take on suicides.

It is a step triggered by a series of events, clearly the individual is not in control of his emotions, actions and has a severe loss of understanding. The person is not clinically fit but that doesn't assuage the fact that somewhere the accountability also lies with him/her.  Life, society and the peer pressure, can be a major reason for driving someone to a suicidal state , but it will only affect if we want it to, when the want of social acceptance , constant approval and the need  to belong proceeds everything!

This is not just society's fault, as a kid many want a particular toy and they will heckle to get one just so they can show it off to other frnz .we dont realize but it is we who want the consent of society more than society judging us.

But then u have bullying and gay attacks, or the recent s**t shaming, this is where the society crosses the line, but I still say when it gets difficult to bear , share it with frnz and family go see a shrink, many of us look down upon the idea of it but there is nothing wrong , what is wrong is giving up.

Suicide not only ends a life but affects many more, the family constantly thinks of what they could have done to prevent it .

Its a collective push but the trigger is held by an unstable individual pardon me but it is akin to a suicide bomber, he was brainwashed, wanted money yet it was him who decided to end his life...same for suicide.

It is important to be vocal about the troubles, recognize and get help

Whats responsible is That moment.

That moment is responsible when a depressed person has such strong feelings to kill himself and he has the strength to end his life. If some how he gets through that moment, I think he can move on.

Neither the society nor the individual can be blamed. Its his life ,if he choose to end it,its his prerogative. N society is cruel to many, not all contemplate suicide.
