I grew up in Bombay. I've been subject to eve teasing and groping. However, I've never felt unsafe. Despite the big city, people could care less aura, I've found in Bombay people actually do care. There are always several men and women who do care and will step in if someone is subject to excessive harassment. I'll always be comfortable in Bombay, even late night.  Moreover, in Bombay working women or young women partying don't get judged or looked down upon as much. I have cousins and friends who work late nights or overnight shifts in Bombay and have no problems.

I've never been to the North, but even as a teen we heard bad tales about Delhi. Eve teasing and groping is more rampant. People simply don't care. A lot of people have political or monetary clout and can get away with murder. No one steps in if something is wrong. Working women, women who date or party are generally looked down on and censured. Despite growing BPOs in the Delhi, Gurgaon area women are simply not comfortable to work or be out late night. I don't feel safe in Delhi. I would definitely not travel in north India without mace or pepper spray. And even though, I am against guns, I would contemplate a concealed carry license when traveling in that region.

Is it safe to be in schools in the USA? Or theaters? How about temples?  You can't prevent tragedies and/or encounters with sickos. You really aren't safe anywhere. The only thing one can do is to keep your guard, be it India or the USA.

Whenever we go to India, I have only been there three times, we hang out in groups. It helps.

India worst place for women among top 19 economies, Canada best

The birth of a girl, so goes a popular Hindu saying, is akin to the arrival of Lakshmi - the four-armed goddess of wealth, often depicted holding lotus flowers and an overflowing pot of gold.

That should assure pride of place for women in Indian society, especially now the country
is growing both in global influence and affluence.

In reality, India's women are discriminated against, abused and even killed on a scale unparalleled in the top 19 economies of the world, according to a new poll by the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

The survey, polling 370 gender specialists, found Canada to be the best place to be a woman amongst G20 nations, excluding the European Union economic grouping. Saudi Arabia was the second worst, after India.

In India you will get raped and you will die.

In USA you will get shot and you will die.

In Middle East you will get bombed and you will die.

In Eastern Europe you will be a sex slave and you will die.

In South East Asia you will work in a sweat shop and you will die.

In half of Africa you will be hungry and you will die.

In the other half of Africa you will get AIDS and you will die.

I know these are gross generalizations, it is true, no place is 100% safe. But we cannot ignore problems. We need to take them on and find solutions

I feel super safe when I am in Mumbai. Once I step out of it, my guards are up.

See this is what's exactly wrong with our community; they get extremely defensive over the slightest issue. However admitting to the fact that we do have a problem is the first step in rooting out causes of the problem.

I never said any country is 100% safe -- it isnt. However we should not bury our heads in the sand to not realize that there is a genuine problem prevalent around India particularly in the Delhi region.

Every country has problems, however there is something really wrong with our society, we should no longer ignore it as another statistics, these things happen in every nook and corner. Unfortunately very few are reported, and then a very rare percentage ever sees the light of media or so called justice, the majority are never heard.
