Five men accused of brutally raping and killing a woman on a New Delhi bus have today pleaded not guilty.
The group were formally indicted in a special court on 13 charges, including rape and murder
One of the lawyers representing the defendants said they signed statements in the special fast-track court today saying they were innocent.

The lawyer cannot be identified under a gag order imposed by the court. The court will begin hearing the evidence of witnesses on Tuesday.
A sixth suspect, who is 17 years old,
will be tried in a juvenile court and could face a maximum sentence of
three years in a reform facility if convicted. A conviction as an adult
could have led to his execution.

Police say the victim and a male
friend were attacked after boarding a bus on December 16 as they tried to
return home after watching a movie.
The six men, the only occupants of
the private bus, beat the man with a metal bar, raped the woman and used
the bar to inflict massive injuries to her during an hour-long ordeal, police say.

The victims were dumped naked on the roadside, and the woman died from her injuries two weeks later in a Singapore hospital.
The brutal attack set off nationwide
protests, sparking a debate about the treatment of women in India and
highlighting the inability of law enforcement agencies to protect them.
Her mother, who told her cherished daughter that if she studied hard she could escape a life of poverty, said her 'dream has ended' with her child's death.
Because of a legal gag order, the victim and her family cannot be identified until the end of the trial of the alleged rapists.

Its disgusting that they are shameless enough not to recognize marital rape as rape..By doing this the government suggests its acknowledgement of women as properties of husbands that have no right over their own body. Death penalty wont make any difference to the rate of crime, as it has never done anywhere. But the root of this rape culture is Patriarchy and its views of women, but unfortunately no one's doing anything about it.

A Saudi preacher who tortured his five-year-old daughter to death has been released after agreeing to pay 'blood money', activists said.

Lama al-Ghamdi died in October having suffered multiple injuries including a crushed skull, broken ribs and left arm, extensive bruising and burns.

The child had also been repeatedly raped and the burned.

Her father Fayhan al-Ghamdi, a prominent Islamist preacher who regularly appears on television in Saudi Arabia, served only a few months in jail despite admitting having used a cane and cables to inflict the injuries.

Activists from the group Women to Drive said the preacher had doubted Lama's virginity and had her checked up by a medic.

Randa al-Kaleeb, a social worker from the hospital where Lama was admitted, said the girl's back was broken and that she had been repeatedly raped.

Her injuries were then burned.

Rather than the death penalty or a long prison sentence, the judge in the case ruled the prosecution could only seek 'blood money', according to activists.

The money is compensation for the next of kin under Islamic law.

Activists said the judge ruled the few months al-Ghamdi spent in prison since his arrest in November was sufficient punishment.

He has reportedly agreed to pay 31,000 ($50,000), which is believed to have gone to Lama's mother.

The amount is half that would have been paid if Lama had been a boy.

Activists say under Islamic laws a father cannot be executed for murdering his children. Husbands can also not be executed for murdering their wives, the group say.

Three Saudi activists, including Manal al-Sharif, who started the women's right to drive campaign, have raised objections to the ruling.

A social media campaign is now gaining momentum after the ruling was publicised.

Manal al-Sharif has launched a campaign on Twitter using the hashtag 'Ana Lama', which is translated as I am Lama, calling for better protection for children and women.

Local reports say public anger in Saudi Arabia is also growing and authorities have said they will create a 24-hour hotline to take calls about child abuse.

Women to Drive said in a post on their Facebook page

For those who say that western influence and dressing sense is cause for rape, think again. Village women covered head to toe and even children are raped daily - not just in India but all over the world. The difference is the attitude which the law takes on rape. The above article, a father (a clergic no less) in Saudi raped his OWN daughter and killed her and made an excuse that he was questioning her virginity. A five year old KID's virginity. He got away with it with having to pay only about 50 K in "blood money" to the mother of the child.
