Dabangg 2 Review

Arbaaz Khan's directorial debut banks heavily on Salman Khan to get the movie through. That's not always a good solution.

From Mufaddal Fakhruddin 20.12.2012

There are two kinds of a Salman Khan movie. One, which banks on Salman Khan's incredible on-screen personality and fan-power to enhance itself. And second, which only banks on Salman Khan. Dabangg, the 2010 classic that gave India a new character to love, and a whole set of dance moves to ape, belongs to the former category, which while being a complete masala entertainer had its heart, and the script, in the right place. Dabangg 2, unfortunately, falls into the latter category, that tries way to hard to ignite the magic of the original, but loses itself into playing too much to the Salman fans and the hoi polloi.

And I am not kidding when I say that Dabangg 2 tries to recreate the original. It does, and goes about it on exactly the same beats. The movie opens with a nod to the original – a fight in a warehouse where Chulbul Pandey urf Robin Hood Pandey urf Sunny Deol Pandey, makes a grand entry and beats a bunch of baddies with an overdose of slow-motion and muscle flexes. You would think that, that would be the end of it, now the story will take a new turn, present something new and exciting for us to rally behind Pandey-ji, but it then again borrows from the original, introducing the main villain for a short while, then cut to a song about his love interest's beautiful eyes, then shift to a few comedic showdowns with the baddy, and, etc.

Dabangg 2 is exactly like Dabangg in terms of pacing, but without the solid story content and interesting characters to give it meaning and move it forward. Dabangg 2 is a routine cop-bad politician story and ends in precisely the same way you would expect it to.

Chulbul Pandey has now transferred to Kanpur, a new area for him to place goggles behind his shirt, beat-up crime, and make news reporters go weak in the knees. Of course, an honest and a dabangg police officer is an itch to a politician who, before him starting to ruin his plans, liked to spread fear and get votes by illegal means. What follows is a series of events you have all experienced before, much like Dabangg, but here it is presented in the most boring, hosh-posh, uninventive, and unconvincing way.

In fact, the story is in the rut for the first 2-hours of the movie. Two hours. Every plot progression is interjected with needless fight scenes (there are at least three sequences of Pandey fighting goons before the story even starts), pointless character build-up of Pandey's father, his brother, his brother's wife, his wife and everyone else; and the songs, which if they weren't as good, would make things even worse. I am actually confused why so much time was spent providing background for the aforementioned characters when none of them are used in the story whatsoever. And an important plot pointer, which should have been mentioned in those scenes, only gets conveniently placed after the intermission because…you know, there needs to be a plot, right? There needs to be conflict and this was the most Hindi film-ic solution they could find.

That's where the problem lies with Dabangg 2, the screenplay and script is majorly lacking, and whatever story it does have is stretched out in a way that it becomes blatantly obvious. There were number of times where I went, "why did I just watch this scene?". Dabangg 2 felt lost. They say not all those who wander are lost, but Dabangg 2 actually is.

Arbaaz Khan tries to cover all of those shortcomings by smacking us in the face with more Salman Khan, more tall-cut broad shots of him walking in style and music blaring in the background, more heavily slow-motion action sequences, more comedy scenes, more (forgettable) one-liners, and more songs.

In terms of performances, Salman Khan as Chulbul Pandey brings all he has into the role, but with a weak script like this even his humongous personality cannot rise above it. Sonakshi Sinha is a prop…she looks really pretty, I guess? Prakash Raj as Baccha Singh and Nikitin Dheer as Chunni Singh are solid as the archetypical villains. Arbaaz Khan, Vinod Khanna, Mahi Gill and other supporting characters provide decent backing to Salman Khan.

Dabangg 2 was supposed to be an absurd, raunchy masala movie, and it is, but not a good one. The excuse that it's not supposed to be an intelligent film doesn't work here because there is a tact into being the leave-your-brains-at-home movie and Arbaaz Khan's directorial debut fails to be that. Very rarely do Hindi movies get a sequel, and Dabangg 2 is exactly the reason why.
