Rahul Saxena has lost.....this was the topic of discussion in
colleges, trains, buses, streets and the Indian music industry...
Rahul Saxena has lost..
Rahul was eliminated in the final round on friday in the popular Sony
talent show- Indian Idol. This same Rahul is a past winner of Zee's
Saregama Mega Final. Anu Malik had told this same Rahul to keep a bag
ready to carry 1 crore rupees. Sonu Nigam had praised this same
Rahul. Farha Khan had said that Rahul deserved to be Indian Idol.
Great singing talent, a strong background in classical music,
excellent songs selection, an attractive personality required for
an "Idol"- Rahul had everything. Hence everybody is asking the same
question- Why did Rahul lose in spite of being so talented?
It is being said now that Ravindar Ravi- a contestant who stays in a
slum in Ludhiana and earns his livelihood by doing painting jobs, is
responsible for Rahul's defeat. Because of this Ravindar, Vishal
Kothari- another talented singer was eliminated earlier.
Ravindar did sing very well during the first few rounds. In spite of
having no classical music training, Ravindar was able to sing really
well. He had learnt music by listening to songs of Kishore Kumar and
Rafi. After Sony showed Ravindar's small house in Ludhiana and
informed the viewers about his poor financial condition, a wave of
sympathy was generated for Ravindar. Due to this sympathy and support
of viewers, Ravindar got huge number of votes in every round.
Everything was fine till the final round started.
In the final, the loopholes in Ravindar's singing style started
becoming visible. He sang so faultily in the last two episodes, that
all the judges criticised him . Sonu Nigam even tried to teach him
how to get the right 'sur'. But Ravindar said- "Muze sur ke baare
mein kuch pata nahi main sirf apni idea se gaata hu". Ravindar kept
advancing in spite of faulty singing and judges' disapproval only
because of the sympathy that he was getting.
Since the viewers are allowed to choose their favorite singer,
Ravindar continued to collect enough votes and talented singers like
Vishal Kothari and Rahul Saxena became the victims.
Only one of the singers out of Ravindar, Rahul Viadya, Amit Sana,
Prajakta Shukre, Abhijit Savant, Harish Moyal, Aditi Paul and Mukesh
Pancholi will be selected as Indian Idol. But after the exit of Rahul
and Vishal, the remaining 7 contestants are disheartened. They have
just one question- If the viewers continue to vote for Ravindar no
matter how bad he sings, then what happens to our chances? How many
more singers will this tsunami called 'Ravindar' claim?
Judges Anu Malik, Sonu and Farha Khan have expressed shock. Vishal
and Rahul are equally shocked. Anu and Sonu have been sending signals
to viewers in every episode telling them not to vote for Ravindar.
But it hasn't made any difference. In Indian Idol, there is no limit
on the number of SMSs or phone calls for a particular singer, and
this loophole is also affecting the chances of contestants. A singer
with a large support base, or a good financial condition can benefit
due to the multiple SMS facility.
On Friday night, Sonu said that Rahul was purposely thrown out of the
show. Rahul was very discouraged after the results. He said-" Lagta
hain Bharat ki janta sirf ek ko hi pyar de rahi hain. Indians are
very emotional and I suffered because of that. I wasn't so bad. I
agree that viewers didn't like my choice of songs in the last two
rounds, because those weren't very popular songs. But I was helpless.
The show is made in such a way that true talent isn't always tested
here. It is difficult to say if viewers would like it if some singer
chooses classical or semi-classical songs. Besides, another singer
had selected the same songs that I had selected. So, I had to let go,
and sing other songs. It is indeed important to support the singers
with poor financial condition, but it is also important to see if
they are talented or not. I will not blame Ravindar. I will blame the
viewers. Their votes will decide Indian Idol. They should select the
right person to be the Indian Idol. Even though the viewers have
rejected me, I have won the hearts of Farah, Sonu and Anu Malik.
Farah even wants me to sing a song for her next movie!"
Now, the remaining 8 contestants will fight for the title. This
competition is no longer about singing, it is the competition
between "Talent" and "Sentiment". If sentiment wins and talent loses,
it will be a huge loss for the Indian music world.
