"I wish I could marry her right away!"

Indian Idol runner up Amit Sana has met his soul mate. At Indian Idol itself!

Amit Sana speaking to his girlfriend. Wedding bells yet?

How much more could the biggest music reality show on Indian television give its runner up? It has given Amit fame, career, fortune and now a life partner.

Amit Sana blushes, as he shows this correspondent his Kolkata based girlfriend's photograph. "We became friends on the sets. But it grew over the phone and the Internet. I also confessed my love to her on the phone and she immediately said yes," he says coyly.

"I felt so much relieved after that. I felt my feelings had to be expressed now!" he laughs. Efforts to make Amit divulge the girl's name prove futile, however. He won't even part with her picture. All he says is "she is a very sweet girl."

So do his parents know about it? "What is there to hide from one's parents? I often speak to her on the phone. Once, my father scolded me for speaking to her so late in the night. That is when I told him. It is ok with him. But her parents are conservative. I am sure they will grant permission to us," he says optimistically.

Amit Sana likes to differ. He likes to deviate from the customs of the world. "Had I been a grown up, I would have married her right away," he says.

And why not? At 22, he can afford to rent a house in the posh locality of Lokhandwala, owns a Hyundai Accent (the car's being delivered to him on Tuesday) and is called Sir by people around him.

"Life has been very generous to me. I thank God for all that he has given me," he says.

The mystery lady from Kolkata was disqualified in the initial rounds. "I told her that she had chosen the wrong song," he sighs.

So will Sana sing "Mummy oh mummy tu kab saans banegi?"

Wait and watch.

"I came to Mumbai to eat 'batata wada'"

From Bhilai to Mumbai, from being a contestant to ending up as a runner-up. The journey has been tiring, but enriching. Sapana Patil spoke to Indian Idol runner up Amit Sana onlife before and after Indian Idol.

"I have finally found some time to rest now. There is little pressure. I can wake up when I want to," smiles Amit who had been busy performing at Ponds Femina Miss India 2005, at the launch of Abhijeet Sawant's album Aapka Abhijeet and also at a wedding at the house of Barjatyas of Rajshri Productions.

His life is still around Idol, though. The ringtone on his phone sings the Indian Idol tune, and he's found his soulmate in a fellow contestant on the show.

Amit who has started getting offers for playback singing, can hardly believe the turn in his life, as he relaxes in his well-appointed apartment in Mumbai's upscale Lokhandwala Complex. The spiked hair is still in place, but so is the shy smile that accompanied the 22 year old from Bhilai to Mumbai.

"I wondered if anyone would bother to work with me"

I had planned to come to Mumbai after I finished my education. I thought of getting myself a job that would fetch me 10,000 rupees. That seemed big money for me at that time," he laughs. "Now, I earn one lakh rupees. I thought I would rent a small house or live with my brother in Panvel, so that I could save on the rent."

But jokes apart, I was scared. I didn't know how to achieve my goals. I thought it was very far from me. I thought I would have to start my career with singing jingles. I wondered if anyone would take me on for singing jingles....

I was skeptical. I wondered what made one sustain in this industry. Is it good voice, versatility or style? From where could I get some style in me? A style that people would like.

I also considered bringing out an album. But wondered if anyone would bother to work with me. Then I thought probably I would have to launch an album singing Bhojpuri songs.

Talking about old times

In this tryst, I had a doubt if I would have the patience to continue with my dream. Sometimes, I wondered if frustration would take over me.

Amit today is the proud owner of a Hyundai Accent. "When I came to Mumbai for the first time, I travelled in a second class compartment. I always wondered if the day would come when I could afford to travel in the AC compartment. But now I travel by air!"

So how does tinsel town attract him?

I had seen in films that Mumbai is the home of the glamour world. When I came here, I was scared to see the huge flyovers and shining billboards. I saw Mc Donald's, Barista. I was amazed at the sight and the fast moving traffic.

Mumbai's glamour called upon Amit to come here. Surprisingly there was one thing that scared him from coming here. "I had seen Ab Tak Chhappan. I am scared of bhais. I have heard that there bhais here. I hope I never come across one," he hopes.

Doing a dish?

Amit and food

I had heard a lot about batata wada. When the train reached Mumbai, I heard a vendor selling batata wada. Gosh! All this effort to eat a batata wada. And I didn't like it!

Nowadays, at home I eat Maggi or Cup O Noodles.

Life after 'Indian Idol'

Life is busy. Earlier there were 20 people on my friends list. Now there are 200. This industry works on relationships. So I make sure, I keep in touch with everyone. On the day of Holi, I had to skip my food, to reply to people's calls.

I keep promising my college friends that I shall call them in five minutes. But I call them after five days. Sometimes they understand, sometimes they don't.

Amit signs off

I am very thankful to God and Indian Idol. I want to give back 100 times what He has given me. I want money and fame, but more than that I want love. When I am on my death bed, I want people to feel sorry. Indian Idol was a sweet chapter in my life.

Voted out in the final of the Indian Idol competition, Amit Sana is still a very happy young man. The Sony Entertainment Television talent hunt gave him the room to expand from classical singing to popular music, and he has been noticed across the country. Amit is now , despite not winning the Indian Idol crown.

Amit is currently getting many offers for stage performances. Just settling into Mumbai as his base (Amit hails from Bhilai), he is confident of achieving stardom within the next few years.

Amit spoke to Senior Correspondent Vijay Singh:

What do you think helped you to reach the final of the Indian Idol competition?

Destiny and work helped me to become the runner-up.

I am accepting destiny's role in my success because I dropped out twice but was voted in again.

Yes, hard work matters but destiny helps you at the right time, and gives you the success you deserve.

You are a classical singer. Do you think you had to compromise in Indian Idol with a lighter kind of music?

I don't call it a compromise.

I like to sing all types of songs, and don't want to keep myself limited to any particular type of song.

I am a good classical singer but I want to be good in Western and filmi songs also. I want to become an expert at all types of songs.

Are you going to learn dancing as well?

I want to become well-versed in dancing also. I am going to do stage shows, where with songs you also have to have a good presentation. And if you know dancing, it supports you during stage shows.

Farahji (Khan, choreographer and Idol judge) told me about it. I was realising it is important, but when she pointed it out to me, I decided to learn dancing.

What major changes have you been through because of Indian Idol?

My attitude has changed. One should be mature and ready for a performance at any point of time.

One should be always positive and optimistic in this field.

Always think about your strengths and hide your weaknesses behind them.

New to Mumbai, how well-versed are you with the music industry?

I am here for the last three months. I chose music as my career, so obviously I have discussed it with people here.

It's a very big industry, and many singers are struggling. You have to work hard for survival.

Reaching such a high level despite such tough competition must have given you some confidence.

Yes, it was good to see myself among the top two from among so many contenders.

And through Indian Idol, people got to know about my voice.

The next time when they hear my voice, they will find it familiar. This is a plus point for me.

When you are new, you are not sure whether people will like your voice or not.

Who supported you the most during the Indian Idol competition?

God.

I took many risky decisions at different points in time. Sometimes, I took decisions that others didn't like. But I benefited from them.

For example, I selected the song, Zindagi mein kabhi koi aaye re rabba. This was not a popular song, nobody had really heard it but it was one of my favourites. I selected that but many people opposed my decision.

I took a risk, and it worked.

Before Indian Idol, what were you doing?

I have completed my high level classical singing classes a few years back. After that, I concentrated on my engineering studies.

I have a limited number of friends. From college, I would come home directly. I spend most of my time watching television and studying.

Before the show, what plans did you have for your singing career?

Actually, I was waiting to finish my graduation (he is a final year student in Bachelors in Information Technology and Management) and come to Mumbai to struggle in the field of music.

How did you learn about Indian Idol?

I came to know about it through television.

After that, I collected information about it from the Internet, and registered myself for the competition.

I prepared myself to work hard and give my best performance.

What was your experience at the initial selections?

On September 8, I waited four hours for my turn to sing. I sang Albela sajan.

I sang it again in front of the judges on September 11. They liked it.

At the selection spot, people were very fancy. They were Westernised, singing English songs and playing the guitar.

I stood silently in a corner, and watched them. I felt a little inferior, and became nervous.

But I was confident that the judges were very good, and had a good knowledge of music, so they would identify my talent.

Amit SanaHow did Indian Idol help you?

I am a student, and now suddenly I get some source of earning! Otherwise, it would have taken so many months for me to come to Mumbai and struggle and achieve something.

Now, people listen to my songs, and I am getting various offers for stage shows!

Sony is going to launch my music album! I did not expect all this!        << ;----- (READ THIS, i couldnt get the statement of R.s 40 lakh though but i read it on some other interview which is currently not in my INBOX)

It made you a star.

No, but it gave us the feeling of how stars deal with people; how they feel...

I need to work hard for at least four or five years to actually become a star.

My classical background will help me improve.

How do you plan to advertise yourself?

I have to work hard for my survival in the music industry.

I am making contacts with people. People in Mumbai are very busy.

How did you feel when you were voted out in the final?

I felt nervous. But I am satisfied with my last performance, which was very good. I am still successful, I reached where one can reach only after struggling for many years.

I am happy with whatever I get!

Did belonging to a small town go against you?

It is not like that.

If I belonged to a bigger town, I would have definitely got more SMS votes. But it also gave me positive results.

Anyway, now Mumbai is my base.

Which musician do you admire the most?

I am a big fan of classical singer Ustad Rashid Khan. I've liked his songs from childhood.
