"It is true that I stopped bursting crackers around six to seven years ago. I think it's not good for the environment. So, while we might enjoy the colours and sound, no one can imagine the harm it does in terms of pollution," says the actor. Also, "I remember the day when I saw how petrified my friend's dog was due to the loud noise the firecrackers made. That day I stopped bursting crackers for good. I felt that it's really unfair on pets. The festival and its celebration shouldn't just be about you. After all, your pets are also as important."
Anushka's Diwali is going to be extremely special this year, considering her next biggie, the late Yash Chopra's Jab Tak Hai Jaan, hits theatres on November 13.
Sonakshi Sinha mixes tradition with eco-friendliness
Diwali is a special occasion for Sonakshi Sinha and her family. Having grown up with two brothers, Luv and Kush, the actor's day has always been full of fun and laughter.
Ask the actor, whose upcoming film, Son Of Sardaar releases on Diwali day, about how she celebrates the festival and she says, "Diwali has always been about togetherness in our family. My father makes it a point to come home from whichever part of the world he is in. There is a puja at home after which dinner is with the family at home or at our family friends' homes. It's great fun because it's one of those days when all of us — family and friends — come together, spend time and have a lot of fun."
She continues that from that year onwards she decided to stop bursting crackers. "I made the choice to only burn one phuljhari to welcome Diwali. It's said to be auspicious. I think that's my favourite memory because I learnt something and I made a decision that would benefit the environment."
Tradition mixed with fun for Govinda
"Diwali is a fun time," says Govinda who, by his own admission, has never missed a single Diwali at home. "We have the traditional Laxmi Puja in the evening and after that, the whole family gathers at our home and we light sparklers, burst crackers and then feast on the delicious spread prepared by Sunita — especially her to-die-for mutton masala. And then the fun begins when the cards are brought out and we all sit down to play through the night."
Meet The Kapoors, the foodies: Randhir, Rishi & Rajiv
Eveyone in the Kapoor khaandan (including Kareena and Karisma) is apparently a foodie. Bollywood's first family enjoys the festivities with great food and some fine whiskey.
Randhir Kapoor reveals, "We no longer have Diwali parties, like we did earlier. But we are a very close-knit family so we do meet and greet each other during Diwali." On the occassion, Rishi Kapoor says: During Diwali, we would go to Chembur to exchange greetings. A puja would be held in the house and we would get shagun. A lavish non-vegetarian spread would be laid out and we would light firecrackers. The party would end the next day after breakfast!
Friends & family get-togethers for Raveena Tandon
It is the only time in the year that the whole family gets together," says Raveena. "Chhoti Diwali, especially, is family day. For Lakshmi Puja, both Anil's and my family come to our place. All the children meet and light phuljaris and patakas (firecrackers) and gorge on sweets. We then go to my mom's house, following which we visit Anil's relatives. The next day is for friends. We have them over for dinner in small bunches, or go over to our friends' get-togethers and play small Rs. 10-20-stake card games. It's basically a time to meet friends, play cards and indulge in sweets without guilt. After all, it is Diwali, so the diet can be ignored for a few days."
Susanne Khan's eco-friendly Diwali
"For this Diwali, I have honestly not thought of anything, but my thorough cleaning process is already underway. Whatever I do, the focus will be on keeping the environment positive. So a nice aroma will be there, in addition to the good energy that every family member will experience. When you have kids, like I do, you have to also make sure that nothing, in terms of renovation and doing up things is dangerous to your children. Their safety is of paramount importance."

The 37-year-old actor has invited friends from the film fraternity such as filmmakers David Dhawan, Ramesh Taurani, Madhur Bhandarkar and actors Shahid Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor. "Grandpa Amitabh Bachchan is leaving no stone unturned and has ordered 200 kandils (paper lanterns) from a well-known manufacturer in Thane — Kailash Desle, who specialises in making eco-friendly decorative items. The entire Bachchan house will be adorned with them."
Special Diwali for Viaan
Actor Shilpa Shetty Kundra and her industrialist husband Raj Kundra also have grand plans for their five-month-old son Viaan Raj Kundra. "He is the light of our lives and what better than to celebrate Diwali with him. We will make our son's first Diwali special," says Shilpa who is also hosting a card party at her house on Diwali.

Katrina Kaif: "My best wishes and warm Diwali greetings to all the readers of HT Caf. Light the diyas, enjoy the sweets, but in small portions. Have loads of fun, be safe and please ensure the safety of others. It's a delightful occasion and should remain that way — light, warm and fun-filled."
Shah Rukh Khan: Diwali is always a special day, for many reasons. Most of my films release on Diwali and I don't know if it's because of Diwali that my films do well, or the fact that my films do well that makes Diwali special. I just know that the day is always special. So here's wishing everyone a happy Diwali!

Have fun and enjoy yourself with your family. Four years ago, Eid, Diwali and my birthday fell on the same day; and it was a multiple celebration. Every festival should be enjoyed to the fullest."
Arjun Kapoor: "Here's wishing all the readers of Hindustan Times a very happy and prosperous Diwali. When I was younger, I did burst a lot of crackers, but I have stopped now, realising how much pollution firecrackers cause. This Diwali, I plan on just taking a break, spending time with my friends and family because all this while I have been working. It will be a good time to catch up with everyone."
Which Bollywood celebs play high-stakes on Diwali
No one celebrates Diwali better than the film industry does. This season is the time of late night celebrations and groggy mornings in B-town. These festive parties are not only the perfect opportunities to build contacts, but they also give our stars a chance to dress traditionally, indulge in mouthwatering delicacies and gamble without guilt.
Apparently, it was Bollywood's original showman Raj Kapoor, who started the trend of card parties. His brother Shashi Kapoor and he, threw the most lavish Diwali parties every year, where A-listers got together, played cards and feasted on sumptuous food and flowing wine.READ MORE

The lower portion was like a warehouse for Yash Chopra's production stuff. Props from Darr (1993) were kept here. The terrace was the only place where we could party.
The watchman didn't know that we had bought the place, so he wouldn't let us in! We had to call the owner to speak to the watchman.
My friends Karan (Johar) and Adi (Aditya Chopra) lit up the house with candles, got a generator and put up some lights and we had a surprise Diwali party as DDLJ had released and a few days later was Diwali. We celebrated Diwali while watching DDLJ. It was a special day for all of us.
We moved into an incomplete house on Diwali: Ajay Devgn
I have done many mad things in the past, and I have some wonderful memories, but nothing can beat this Diwali memory. About five years ago when I bought a house in Juhu (where we currently live), we needed to have it renovated before moving in. Diwali was around the corner, but the renovation didn't look like it would be done any time soon.
We got impatient, and on Diwali, we moved in anyway. It was maddening and difficult, but in hindsight, it was a lot of fun. We arrived in the morning and arranged the place for our celebrations, working around the incomplete renovation. The place was an absolute mess, but we didn't care. With half-painted walls, sacks of cement, carpenter's tools, paint cans all around, our house resembled a storeroom.
But I'm glad we did all that because that Diwali ushered in a new phase in my life and Goddess Lakshmi's blessings continue to be with us ever since.
Diwali was the longest school break: Akshay Kumar
As a child, my reasons for loving Diwali were a bit selfish. Diwali was the longest school break, so it was my favourite festival.
Like any other kid, I also loved bursting crackers. I'd buy as many as I could with the money I was given, but when they were over, I would search for more among the crackers that other people had burst, to see if any of them had not actually gone off.
And of course, eating mithais was another favourite thing, since this is one festival when you can gorge on a variety of homemade as well as store-bought sweets. Today, I miss the days when I would celebrate Diwali with so much energy and delight, something only a kid can experience.
