~~ Poda Podi Reviews & Discussions ~~

After a mass Osthe, Silambarasan features in Podaa Podi directed by debutant Vignesh Shivan with Varu Sarathkumar, daughter of Sarathkumar, as screen partner. Podaa Podi was in the cross hairs for its lengthy duration in the making. However, the film does not look dated at all thanks to its premise.

The story is set in London where the lead pair meets, falls in love amidst dance as the backdrop. It is an apt debut vehicle for Varu who has a good screen presence and emotes quite naturally and spontaneously. The young girl has a powerful face and if she takes care of her weight, she is bound to go places in the industry.

STR does not leave any opportunity go waste when it comes to showcasing his chiseled torso and gets appreciative claps from women audience in the opening number 'Love Pannalaama Venaamaa'.  The collective effort of dance choreographer, editor and cinematographer comes to fore in this number.

The first half is breezy and Vignesh Shivan makes the audience sit up and take note of the freshness in his execution. Through Varu and STR, he clearly etches the characters of current urban youth and their 'matter of fact' attitude. Their impulsive decision making, candid outlook, a superficial viewpoint towards life and taking life as it comes with no mushiness are all well portrayed.

Characterization of Varu and STR are one of the salient features of PP. While Varu remains the girl who has been raised in foreign shores, STR, by his own admittance, represents the quintessential Tamil male who despite his geographical placement, continues to prefer dominance over his woman and feels it his right. Although Shivan cannot be found fault for writing such a male character, it does sound very regressive when STR just calls out to Varu for making more babies!

While Shivan is successful in hooking the audience in the first half generating a surprise element through his lead characters, he fumbles in the second half with his archaic take on Tamil culture and sentiment much in contrast to the tone that was set in the first half. The pace and the mood change in the second half and the course of the screenplay does tend to meander with detours in track. You start wondering where the director wants to take his story to. Having said that, Shivan should also be appreciated for eschewing sleaze, even when the story gives a lot of scope for it.

Dialogues not only capture the irreverent mood of the youth but also convey the superficial nature of the lead pair's relationship. Varu opting to speak for herself works very well for her as her unique diction and dialogue delivery gives much credence to her character. She dances quite well and gracefully too and for the kuthu number she delivers the right kind of movements. The mischievous glint in her eyes when she lies to STR is a delight to watch.

For STR, the role suits him well and he plays with a lot of conviction. The actor should be lauded for essaying a young father's role unmindful of his image. He also deprecates himself taking help from his characters in previous films. The supporting cast of VTV Ganesh and Shobana does their roles well.

Dharan's compositions are the biggest plus for PP and the young man scores in RR too. Dance choreographers need special mention as the film is based on dance and they have done good work at that. Cinematographer Duncan Telford captures London in its colorful mood and the dances in its vibrant hue.

Toting it up, Podaa Podi is an ideal festival outing for youth, which has good looking cast, fun moments, nice songs and a few peppy dance numbers.

Verdict: Good youth time pass

Raviyin Review Vilaiyadal of Podaa Podi

Poda Podi is an romanctic comedy film which is starring Simbu and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar it was making nearly for 3 years. Ganesh and Shobana is acting in an important role music by Dharan, Cinematography by Duncan and directed by Debutant director Vignesh Sivan.

Storyline and Episodes

Arjun (Simbhu) is an animator who respect culture typical indian boy and Nisha (Varu) is an salsa dancer and a enjoyable girl both falls in love with each other on the first sight. Rest of the is about the what is happenin in the next seven episode in the life ofArjun and Nisha.

They divide the whole Poda Podi in 6 category with funny names
First Episode : Kadhal Vantha Jooru
Second Episode : Kalyanam Katharika
Third Episode : Kolanthai Kutty
Fourth Episode : Sorry Nisha
Fifth Episode : Vaaya Kuduthu Dash Pannatheenga
Sixth Episode : I am a Kuthu Dancer
Seventh Episode : FIlm End

Performance
Simbhu : He is just a screen stealer in his whole career if anyone ask me which is a entertaining performance of simbhu means I will openly say without any doubt that in Poda Podi only he did his best entertaining performance after VTV and Vaanam his performance in Poda Podi is noted. He is just damn good as in this film there are more space for comedy but not a slapstick comedy most of his comedy are by dialogue delviery and expression he just osum in it. Timing la semaya adipaaru. Simbhu avoid his mass image in this film which is a good sign for him. In emotional scenes simbhu scores as a performer make everyone in tears. Dance also he is good especially last songs he rocks with his performance.

Varalaxmi Sarathkumar :
This is her first movie but it doesn't look like her first movie. But her voice sometime mostly in the first half hour it will irritate us. Some of them find diffiicult to gel with her voice but some easily gel with her voice. Even her dance is too good but in salasa she have to improve what i feel is. Other than that she has given an outstnading perforamnce in this film her expression are cute in some scene especially in the kuthu dancer episode.

Shobana : She has been wasted in this role no scope for acting she just comes as a property. Also the sad part is she didn't use her own voice. Hope Vginesh Sivan could have used Shobana properly.

Ganesh : He is just a rockstar he makes everyone funny with his comedy whatever he seriously speak it will turn out to be a comedy.  He is a complete entertainer.

Mojo : His haristly irks us kaara chutney uthina mathri but towards the end they make his character in a funny way he just rocked towards the end. In the beginning just a spoiler.

Analysis - Positives and Negativess

Positives
How they take the seven episode of Varu and Simbhu life is the major highlight of the film. As the director Vignesh sivan has comes up with a innovative idea. The best episode is the last two episode Vaaya kuduthu and I am Kuthu dancer as it has ultimate comedy it will appeal to masses as in one portion varu teacher salsa to simbhu and it was ultimate comedy next portion simbhhu teach folk to varu and it turns ultimated comedy what a thinking by the director both the varu and simbhu rocks with their expression. But other episode like kolanthai kutty and sorry nisha covers sentimental at the same time entertainment also there. Vignesh Sivan has brought a unique concept to us..kodus to him.

Vignesh Sivan concept, direction, screenplay are just something new to tamil cinema. As usually we get romanctic comedy with all masala elements added but this guys introduce hollywood style of romanctic comedy to tamil cinema. As only purpose he did was to entertain us succeded on it. Each and every scene are very humourous he thinks brilliantly. Some scene close to our heart which are Simbhu started to feeel the pain of Nisha delivery towards the intermission, Simbhu and Varu pain after losing their childand many more scenes. Screenplay is very very engaging in this movies. It happens thoroughout in London but most scenes we felt engaged.

Dharan music is outstading his previous albums didn't do well but in this movie everything was perfect. Songs are the huge plus for the movie. As another plus is songs didn't misplaced in this movie as the songs gelled with the movie throughtly except one song. I am a kuthu dancer is brillaint choreogrpah is superb.

Cinematogrpahy by duncan is very good as he showed the london brillaintly each every location he showed it very brillaintly. Techinically it is brillaintly. Editing is slick as we feel the duration is 2 hours we want the duration to be lengthy this is the success of the film.

Huge plus of the film is they didn't end movie as Simbhu and Varu wins the competetion like that they end very differently in a funny way like the idea of Vignesh Sivan.

Negatives

Love Panlama Venama is not needed at all to the film as it is like a introduction of Simbhu as they could have take the whole Love Panlama Venama as a montage so it will be better idea. But everythough the picturization is interesting it didn't gelled with the film as the songs misplaced.

As i said earlier Shobana character was completely wasted they could have given improvement and establsih her character and also given her own voice.

Even though Varu gave a good perforamnce in debut film her voice is irritating in many scenes as she talks so fast they could have considered that also.

In the dance competetion everthing is perfect but judges ?? Judges vanthu looks like bajan lal settu kalaynathuku vantah visitors mathri they don't look like judges at all it was veyr funny when they give comments we can't control our laugh. The makers of Poda Podi could have choose a better judge as a actors.. Eventhough I am kuthu dancer choreography is good standing ovation panni all appreciates it like cinematic they coul have avoid it also..

Stunts only one stunts coming that is not needed at all that stunt is very cinematic and unbeleivable it is a spoiler.

Main problem of the film is first 15-20 minutes as it is very unrealistic as people would found tired to watch it and it is unbeleivable they have to gel with it in the first 15-20 minutes other wise people won't be enjoying Poda Podi.

Conclusion
Poda Podi is a film where youngster will support it and make the film a hit and it will entertain us a lot. Poda Podi is mainly targeted at youngster and also family audience will found this film undigestable as some scenes will irks them. As I repeating first 15-20 minutes we didn't gelled into the film means defiently we won't impress with the film. Poda Podi is a different attempt very westernish film.

Verdict : Big entertainment waiting with Poda Podi especially for youngster <3
Rating : 7.80/10
