THE GREAT WORLD WAR 1

The Month of November takes an insight at the Great War that affected the world an odd 100 years ago. Lets together spend a couple of minutes remembering all those who loose their lives in places like iraq, for your safety..

Below is some useful information for you.. Please do take time into reading it and getting involved.

summary ;

A big year on the Western Front, 1916 saw two of the bloodiest battles of the war as well as the Battle of Jutland, the only major clash between the British and German fleets. Not believing that a breakthrough was possible, Germany began a battle of attrition in February by assaulting the fortress city of Verdun. With the French under heavy pressure, the British launched a major offensive at the Somme in July. While the German attack at Verdun ultimately failed, the British suffered horrific casualties at the Somme for little ground gained. While both sides were bleeding in the west, Russia was able to recover and launched the successful Brusilov Offensive in June.

effects on men ;
At the begining, many men had NO IDEA what it would be like and thought it would be a fun outing. The British Goverment was so desprate to get soliders that they did not bother checking birth certificates, so you had 15 - 16 year olds going off to war. People thought a solider was the new trend, little did they know, it was the jaws of death. Once they got to the actual trenches, and had some first hand combat experience, NOBODY LIKED/ENJOYED WAR. They continued to do their duty and went through each day hoping to get through it alive and in one piece.

Many of them were driven insane by the constant artillery bombardments and the smell of the dead bodies lying out in no mans land, between the wire obstacles. Rats, lice and fleas were the least of their problems, as they had to try to stay alive. Many were admited into mental hospitals to get treated as they had suffered shell shock due to the intense pressure and loss at war. There are also a theme of Homosexuilty, as men were deprived of women encounter at war. Futher more, there was a lot of class difference, as nearly 90% of Britians young men were forced to go to war. This included, the public school, upper class, lower class, working class.. So there was a lot of different segregation.

effects on women ;

The war affected women in a number of ways. For one thing, women were allowed to enter the work force. Many women went to work in factories and as trolley car drivers. Other women went to work in the fields. Many women became nurses. However, most women did not enjoy this line of work. During the war women became an important part of the work force. Since most of the men were off fighting, the women were needed to stay home and run things so that the ecomony would not completly fall apart. However, things were not easy at the home front.

Many women lost men in their lives, their husbands, brothers, and fathers. Before the war, women mostly depended on men for finiancial support. But with so many gone to battle and then dying, women had to to go work just to support themselves.
During the war, women were also viewed as important. Images of women on posters and postcards were to provide inspiration for the men in battle. The belief was that when a man saw the image of a woman he would be reminded of what he was fighting to protect. But he would also get a sense of comfort thinking about his loved one at home.

Society also wanted women to focus on having children. With so many people dying there would be a population decline. In order to keep the population numbers up, women and men were asked to reproduce. During the war there were many things that women were asked to do: go to work, volunteer, have kids, etc. However, the role of women did not remain this way after the war. Once the war was over and the men began to return home, women were expected to return to the kitchens and hearths as before.

The Royal British Legion along with The Poppy Appeal

What is the Poppy Appeal?

The charity organises a fund-raising drive each year in the weeks before Remembrance Sunday, during which artificial poppies, meant to be worn on clothing, are offered to the public in return for a charitable donation. Over the course of the preceding year a team of around 50 people, the majority of them disabled and ex-Service connected ' work all year round producing millions of poppies at the factory in Richmond. The idea of poppies dates back to the poem In Flanders Fields about the First World War, after which the Legion was founded. Poppies are worn until Remembrance Day to remember the fallen of the First World War, and implicitly of all wars.

What do you think about War?

- I Think War is Something That Cant be Explained...Its Something No one Wants To Do..But Sometimes it Has To Take Place...In a Defence or Offence Form. Its The Same As Suicide and Murder. Unless Its In Defence! When It Comes to Matter to Protecting Your Country..It Is Different.Thats Loyalty and Nationaltiy..But when Its War over Something Unjust..Its Pure Violence! And War dosent Only Exist Among Humans..Even Animals Fight!

Should War be Continued in places like Iraq?

No..War Should Have Never Even Have Happened in Iraq..US Had No Right To Interfere In Their Matters..Of Course When It Came to Saddam Hussain..they Did Right By Taking his Place..but Killling HIM? WRONG! And They also Have No Right To Bomb Iraq or Iran. People Die everyday of it..they Havnt Lead a Normal Life..Kids,Women,Men all Alike!

Why do you think War exists?

I Dont Think This Question Will Ever be Answered...War..It Exists For Many Reasons Begining W/ Power,Money,Land,Territory,Selfish Reason, and War Can also Take Place For Protecting Your Land,Your People,Your Country. It Can Also Take Place for Political Reasons [Whether it Is Neccessary or Not..Its Unknown and So is If its Corrupt or Not].It can also Be A Millitary Campaign. or Over A Dispute of A Formerly United Country Splitting or Brining a Third In. It Could be A Fight For Land and also A Fight and Control over Many Things Like Oil. War Can also Happen For Reasons Like Religion and Culture.

Do we take the sacrfices by Soliders for granted?

Yes..There are Many Of Us..That Take The Sacrifices For Granted..Which is Wrong..those Men Go To FIght For Us..and Here..No one Cares..those Men have a Family,A Life just Lik us and Its Our Duty To Respect them and Bless Them with Good Wishes and Luck. For Me..Ill Never Take The Sacrifices Made By the British Army Many a Time for Granted..Im Thankful to Them For Keeping Peace.

Are we to blame for Widows' cries?
Yes...We Are To Blame..Those Women..The Strenth They Have To See Their Loved Ones Going and Knowing that This Could be The Last Timem they See Them..Yet They Remain Strong...In Hopes of Not Making Others Weak!
...They Are Truly To Be In Awe Of..We Have No Clue What They Go Through! Cry
XOXO

Something i read online abt War... So felt like sharing... Its pretty good...

Well here is the link

I have copied here the content from the link

What is war?

by Harry Browne

The politicians' stirring phrases are meant to keep our eyes averted from the reality of war -- to make us imagine heroic young men marching in parades, winning glorious battles, and bringing peace and democracy to the world.

But war is something quite different from that.

It is your children or your grandchildren dying before they're even fully adults, or being maimed or mentally scarred for life. It is your brothers and sisters being taught to kill other people -- and to hate people who are just like themselves and who don't want to kill anyone either. It is your children seeing their buddies' limbs blown off their bodies.

It is hundreds of thousands of human beings dying years before their time. It is millions of people separated forever from the ones they loved.

It is the destruction of homes for which people worked for decades. It is the end of careers that meant as much to others as your career means to you.

It is the imposition of heavy taxes on you and on other Americans and on people in other countries -- taxes that remain long after the war is over. It is the suppression of free speech and the jailing of people who criticize the government.

It is the imposition of slavery by forcing young men to serve in the military.

It is goading the public to hate foreign people and races -- whether Arabs or Japanese or Cubans. It is numbing our sensibilities to cruelties inflicted on foreigners.

It is cheering at the news of foreign pilots killed in their planes, of young men blown to bits while trapped inside tanks, of sailors drowned at sea.

Other tragedies inevitably trail in the wake of war. Politicians lie even more than usual. Secrecy and cover-ups become the rule rather than the exception. The press becomes even less reliable.

War is genocide, torture, cruelty, propaganda, dishonesty, and slavery.

War is the worst obscenity government can inflict upon its subjects. It makes every other political crime -- corruption, bribery, favoritism, vote-buying, graft, dishonesty -- seem petty.

Government's Role

If government has a role to play in foreign affairs, it isn't to win wars, to assure that the right people run foreign countries, to protect innocent foreigners from guilty aggressors, or to make the world safe for democracy -- or even a safer place at all.

If government has a role, it can be only to keep us out of wars -- to make sure no one will ever attack us, to make certain you can live your life in peace, to assure you the freedom to ignore who is right and who is wrong in foreign conflicts.

The only reason for military power is to discourage attackers, and -- if they come anyway -- to repel them at our borders. Such things as stationing troops in far-off lands, meddling in foreign disputes, and sending our children to foreign countries as "peacekeepers" only encourage war.

To make America safer and to assure that we stay at peace, we don't need to put more weapons in the hands of government employees, or to reform military purchasing methods, or to make more treaties with other governments, or to increase the military budget.

In fact, we need just the opposite of these things. We need to make it as hard as possible for politicians to involve us in war. And we need to create a defense system that relies as little as possible on the normal workings of government.
