Hello dearies, Here's another one from me..
Well, here's the inspiration for this one,
http://www.india-forums.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=3248889
Those of you who've followed my previous works might know, that I simply cannot write an OS to save my life..

All of them have now turned into SS's..

However, this one's slightly different from my previous ones.. The best bit being, No words have been spoken by the characters in this one..
I hope you do like it..
It might sound a little cliched, but like Gorky Sir says, 'Cliches become cliches because they work!'
So here I present,
[ETF Headquarters]
It was another seemingly normal working day. She sat on the floor surrounded
by stacks of files, with several empty cups of coffee lying around; her hair
resembled a pen-stand with various coloured sketch pens shoved in her bun. She
crouched on her knees and went through the figures again; Something seemed
amiss.. And before she knew it, her tongue let out her inner frustration; Kuch
toh choot raha hai, Riya!
She frowned and clutched her head; her other hand
involuntarily reached out to grab her mug of coffee.. She grumbled when she
found it empty; she strained her neck and called out, half-hoping someone would
hear her, 'Please send me a strong cup of black coffee!'.
She looked around at the mess she had created; Gosh!
Whoever said senior officers don't work.. Being the Head Research
Specialist of one of the formidable special services in the country wasn't a
cinch! She sighed and buried her head in a red box file that seemed to be
demanding her attention and was lost!
However, a figure seemed to be observing her for the last
few minutes. He was about to walk in to offer her some much-needed help, when
he heard her calling out for another cup of coffee.. He looked around and saw 6
empty mugs lying on the floor. He shook his head, smirked and walked into the pantry.
Riya was getting frustrated slowly; she looked in the
direction of the door. It had been over 20 minutes since she had demanded a
coffee.. Did no one take her seriously?
She frowned and was about to rise
on her feet, to give her a staff a earful, when she stumbled as a sharp pain
shot up her left foot. 'Ouch!'
She clutched it and slumped back on the floor.
She had completely forgotten why she had been locked in that dingy room with a
mountain of papers.. She had tumbled off a hillock, during one of their
adventurous cases two weeks back and fractured her ankle. Rathore and Arjun, as
expected had exercised their seniority rights and confined her to the desk!
She rubbed her temples and sighed; she missed being out on
the field. Cracking up listening to Shree and Chottu's jokes, Rathore barking
orders at her and most importantly, she missed being with him!
It had been over
a week since she hadn't seen him around. Finally, not being able to contain her
curiosity, she had enquired from Rathore and learnt that Arjun was away on an
undercover mission and would return a week later..
She rested her head against the cold wall and shut her eyes;
the last two years flashed in front of her. She had met him two years back;
they had their own share of issues and tiffs, but everything seemed to be just
fine now.
He had mellowed down a lot after having tracked and killed Sikandar.
Though he and Rathore often had their share of snide comments and never missed
an opportunity to take a dig at each other, they had come to an understanding.
They respected each others dedication and approach towards their work and
shared a civil working relationship.
But with her, ACP Arjun Rawte was still the same; he often reprimanded and scolded
her, when she tried to prove herself to him, but now, she knew better!
She realized that she had lost out her heart to him, when he
had been shot during one of their rescue operations. She had held on to his
immobile body for hours, sobbing uncontrollably until the paramedics had found
them. And that is when, Riya had realized the true meaning of the clichd human
emotion, called true love!
Things had started to get better between them for the last
few months; he was slowly opening up to her. They had had long conversations
encompassing a few glimpses into each others' troubled pasts, their reclusive
present and their uncertain futures; both unaware of the fact that they were
being bound together by a fine thread of companionship.
She had been overjoyed when he had accepted a promotion and
decided to stay back at ETF. His mere presence around her was enough to put up
a smile on her pretty face.
And then she had pushed her fickle feelings, in a
faraway corner of her heart; she was happy with the way things were.. She
couldn't lose him ever!
She felt a warm hand on her shoulder and slowly opened her
eyelids; there stood the conqueror of her heart with a smirk plastered on his
face! She fluttered her eyelashes to make sure that she wasn't dreaming yet
again.
A strong smell of coffee flooded her senses and she
realized, he was back!
She smiled and saw him place the mug of coffee on the
floor, as he settled down next to her on the carpet. He glanced around the room and smirked;
somethings never change!
She was still the stubborn, nerdy woman who could
annoy the hell out of a person by stating percentages and statistical data.
He picked up a file and browsed through it. She picked up
the mug of coffee, took a sip and rewarded him with a smile. He slightly nodded
his head acknowledging it.
Rathore walked into the conference room with a new case file, putting an end to Shree and Chottu's gaming session.
He
looked around quizzically for the other two and recollected that maybe Arjun
wasn't back yet and Riya would be in her office.
He marched towards Riya' cabin
with Shree and Chottu in tow.
They swung the door open and their mouths fell
open at the site in front of them!
Chottu and Shree exchanged knowing glances
and grinned widely, while Rathore's gaze oscillated from Arjun-Riya to Shree
and Chottu.
Arjun was crouched on the floor and seemed to be engrossed
in reading a file, while Riya sat opposite him, furiously typing away on her
notebook. That bit was pretty normal!
What wasn't was maybe both of them hadn't realized that
they had been sipping coffee from the same mug that Arjun had brought for Riya!! They saw Riya take a sip and replace the mug back on the floor, while Arjun grabbed it the very next instant.
Rathore, Shree and Chottu chuckled and walked out, not wanting to disturb
them.
Arjun's phone rang in a few minutes and both, him and Riya were on their
way to inspect a crime scene.
As always, Arjun took the wheel and Riya sat in the
passenger's seat; both silent, not wishing the silent conversation to end.
Arjun looked straight ahead and concentrated on the road, while Riya crossed
her legs and rested her head against the closed window; both glancing at each
other every few minutes.
Riya observed him carefully, his normally furrowed forehead
looked relaxed, those lines were now gone!
She had started observing these
little things about him; he had started shaving frequently. That rugged look
was now replaced by a slight stubble on his cheeks; it made her heart flip
every time she set her eyes upon him. If he had looked ruggedly handsome
before, now he looked absolutely delectable!
She hit her forehead playfully and resumed her favorite
pastime.
His gun-metal black eyes always gave him away. Arjun had
always managed to bury his pain in a corner of his heart, masking it behind a
mask of indifference.
However, his eyes always reflected his inner turmoil. But
the mask seemed to be slipping away these days and well, Riya, being a keen
observer, had never failed to miss it!
She recollected how he had often attempted to smile; but she
felt as if there was something that was holding him back.
She pondered over it
for a few weeks and realized that it was ACP Arjun's over-analytical brain!
His
mind had managed to convince him that happiness somehow equaled betrayal of
Roshni's memories. And Riya knew the man well enough to conclude that he would
never do it ever!
It pained her to watch him struggle to live every single
day. And then had begun the series of attempts by her to try and make him
smile. She had often witnessed him smirking at Rathore's snide remarks,
grinning inwardly at Shree and Chottu's antics, but he hadn't graced them with
a smile ever!
She hadn't realized that she was gazing at him, until the
brakes were applied and the car came to a screeching halt. She swiftly turned
her head and saw him looking at her with a raised eyebrow.
She slightly nodded
her head and looked away, 'What was that! were u gaping at him, u foolish
girl! What would he think.. Get a grip!'
Arjun gripped the steering and waited for the red lights to
change. He rolled down the window and peeped out, they were stuck in the middle
of a roadblock! Finding nothing around to keep him entertained, he glanced up
at his partner next to him.
He knitted his eyebrows and scrutinized her; her legs
crossed, her with her hands crossed over her chest. Her companions, the black
leather notebook and her pink pen sat cradled in her lap.
He turned his gaze upwards and saw her hair neatly braided
into a French pleat, with a few loose strands of hair straying on her cheeks
and her forehead.
He was suddenly reminded of something and blinked his eyes
twice. His eyes darted off to her hair again, as he realized she had no pins on
to hold her hair in place; the red flowery clip was missing, yet again!
He rested his head against the seat and rubbed his temples.
He hadn't seen her put it on ever since he had returned it back to her. He
remembered the day when he had returned it back to her; she had been upset
about the case.
And unknowingly, that gesture of his had made her smile. Now
that he thought over it, he wondered if there had been something more to that
action of his!
He slightly shook his head and mentally reprimanded himself,
'Stop reading into it, Arjun! Maybe she's misplaced it or maybe she doesn't
like it anymore.'
He sighed and turned away from her and stared straight into the
row of cars ahead of them, attempting to block her out of his tormented heart
one more.
He glanced at her once and couldn't help but smirk, having proven
himself right yet again! No, Riya Mukherjee hadn't donned the clip since then!
He wondered why he observed and remembered these silly
details about her; she still wiped the rim of her cup every time she had
coffee. The way she threw her hair back always managed to amuse him for some
reason. He stole yet another glance at her and saw her fingers clutching the
black notebook.
She always carried it
with her as if it was her sole companion. He recollected her noting down every
single detail into that diary of hers and that had often impressed him; she was
good at her job!
But then, he had often seen her scribbling into it, when
they would be sitting idle in the conference room! He wondered what she had
been writing in there; maybe personal stuff?!
And before he could help it, a stray thought flashed into
his head, does she ever write about him?
He shook his head inwardly, 'No! Why
would she? She definitely had better work to do!' and then a rare smile crept
up on his lips, 'I'm sure she does!'
He saw her shut eyes and her serene face and recollected
that fateful night when she had been nearly shot.
He had gathered her in his
arms and promised to get her out of there, safe.
Now as he looked back, were
those the first signs, that his heart had started coming alive again??
He had taunted her, insulted at her for not being able to
shoot; he had even called her a coward and politely asked her to return to the
research desk, and not put others lives at stake.
However, a few weeks later, he himself had brilliantly devised a plan
to make her face her fears during one of their missions.
Yes it had been
incredibly stupid and reckless of him, to have stood at gunpoint himself..
But something at the back of his head had assured him; that
if he had really understood her silent gazes and barely there smiles
occasionally at him; she would shoot!
And she hadn't disappointed him; she had taken a perfect
head shot; as if fulfilling his challenge and proving to him that she wouldn't
let him die on her!
And he had in turn returned the favour by consoling her and
driving away her regrets for having taken a life.'
He had put on his 'i-care-a-damn' mask as soon as he had
felt it slip away to stop his heart from winning the waging battle with his
mind. But today, as he reflected back over the incident, he could read through
that look of relief in her eyes, when he'd said, 'Riya, tumne ek jaan li nahi
hai, riya.. ek jaan bachayi hai!'
His chain of thoughts was interrupted by a shrill honking of
cars behind them. Riya turned to face him and saw his hands firmly placed on the
steering. She looked up at him and saw
him, staring straight through the windscreen, with a barely there smile around
the corner of his lips.
She wondered what he had been thinking, and on cue, the
two dimpled pits made their appearance on her cheeks.
She heard the car honking behind them and called out to him,
'Sir..Arjun Sir..'
She shook her head, 'Where was he lost? What was he
thinking? Maybe he was having a flashback of his wife?'
The felt a stinging pain in a far corner of her heart, but
one look at his smiling face and it vanished into oblivion; she would live with
it, if it made him smile!
She lifted her hand and placed it on his. That undid the
moment as she felt him jerk. He looked at her and knitted his brows.
And before he could question her, he heard someone call out
to them, 'Arre gaadi aage le lo.. yeh policewale to jeena haraam karke rakh
dete hain..'
She saw him shift in his seat and just as he was about to
pull out his seat-belt, he felt something tug at his palm.
She was still holding
on to him; he looked up at her surprised and saw her nod in negative..
Arjun rolled his eyes and hit the accelerator.. 'She already
has me wound around her little finger!'
Riya felt the wheels set in motion and left his palm
unwillingly.
She pretended to be engrossed in sightseeing for a while and looked at him through the corner of her eyes.
He had that casual look
plastered on his face and Riya was about to turn away, when something caught
her attention..
There it was, again! A
lop-sided smile seemed to be creeping up his lips!!
She turned away contented and rested her head against the
seat.
She realized something and stuck her palm out of the window. She felt raindrops make their way down her
fingers; perfect!
She collected a few drops of water in her fist and in the
heat of the moment, those raindrops were splashed across Arjun's face..
She
looked up at him, quizzically with a naughty glint in her eyes, which vanished
the very next instant, when she saw him stare at her, with his jaw clenched.
Maybe, it's still a long way to go! , she was about
to look away, when she felt him tug at her arm.
Half-scared, her eyes followed his fingers
and rested on his face; what she simply blew her off away!
He was actually
smiling; smiling at her; for her!
She
looked at him, with a question mark plastered on her face and was about to
reward him with one of her dimpled smiles, when she felt him raise his hand
towards her. She knitted her eyebrows, unable to prepare herself for what was
coming next!
Arjun's eyes darted off to the throbbing pulse in her neck;
he smirked inwardly and before she could make sense of his sudden jovial
actions, she felt cold water drops slightly hit her face.
Riya's eyes popped
out as she stared at him. He seemed to be basking in the glory of his
revenge and there it was, yet again!
He flashed a toothy smile at her and
resumed driving, not before winking at her..
Riya sat in her seat, stupefied. She blinked her eyes a
couple of times and looked at him stealthily and saw him grinning widely.
She quickly shut her eyelids, and let a lone teardrop mingle
with the raindrops. She threw her head back on the seat and couldn't suppress her
lips from curving into a smile; only this time, it felt different.
She had just realised, that it wasn't her own; but his
smile that was playing on her lips!
So, how was it?? And tell me honestly, how many of you actually smiled while reading this one??
Well, I hope you did..
