Chapter 50 - The Hunch

He caressed her cheek, gazing at her peacefully sleeping face before he left the room. She had woken up just once in the night, a bit confused about what had happened earlier. She had hugged him and cried her fears out, then fallen asleep in his lap. Arnav sighed in relief. He had heard Radhika and Shyaam leave in the morning, with Padmini sobbing loudly.

Her state of mind was perfectly viable. She had had so little time with this daughter of hers, and in the end, to find out the girl was just a snake who hated her little sister to the point of ruining her... Wouldn't any mother's heart be crushed? Anjali and Shaan had stayed at the Gupta Haveli too that night, in the guestroom, in case they were needed. Arnav had asked his cousin to call up home and tell them what had happened.

And now, as he walked downstairs, something whispered to him that even though things seemed clearer now, they were not... He paused near Khushi's father, who had managed to keep control over himself, unlike his wife who had saught refuge in the prayer room.

"Keep her safe," he muttered to Alok Kumaar Gupta.

She felt a pair of hands help her sit up. She cracked open her eyes to see a very worried Anjali sitting in front of her.

"Aap theek to hain?" (Are you alright?)

Khushi nodded feebly and looked around the room. Anjali squeezed her hand.

"Chhote ko kuchh kaam se Delhi jaana pada... Aap chinta mat kijiye, voh jitni jaldi ho sake vaapas aayenge." (Chhote had had to go to Delhi... Don't worry, he'll be back soon.)

He had called a few times to check on her and if he believed his cousin, Khushi was getting her forces back. Yet, for some unknown reason, he felt apprehensive of something he was unable to see. What was he missing? Was this some kind of foreboding or was it the events of the previous night dragging tiredness over him?

"Driver, gaari ghumaao!" (Driver, turn the car!)

"But Sir-" Aman, his assistant gawked at him. They had already reached the boundaries of Delhi. "The deal?"

Panic hit Aman. This was a really important deal for the company. What had gotten into his boss? But Arnav squared his shoulders and repeated his order firmly. He knew he had to return home. Something bad was going to happen, he could feel it to his bones...

"Hum bilkul theek hain, Di!" Khushi insisted, pushing the bowl of soup away. Anjali looked at her and bit her lip. "Aap ziaada talkeef mat leejiye, Di. Hum thodi der ke liye bahar jaa sakte hain?" (I am completely fine, Di! Don't worry so much. Can I go outside for a few minutes?)

"Kya?" Anjali blurted, aghast. Khushi still looked a bit pale and haggard. She had hardly eaten since she had gotten up. (What?)

"I need some air, Di, please," she pleaded innocently.

"But the deal, sir?"

"We'll deal with it later, dammit!" Arnav swore back both at his assistant and at his mobile.

He did have a reason to. When he had insisted the driver should return, he wanted to get back home as fast as possible and by all means, his driver had obeyed and taken a shortcut. But it seemed that lady luck was not on his side. An accident had blocked the road and they were in a zone where he couldn't get the tiniest signal on his mobile.

And that made it impossible for him to call home. He had been sitting in the car for almost three hours, without any news of Khushi and it was scaring him. He gritted his teeth together. He had to get home. There should be a way out of here.

"Namaste Maasaji. Kaise hain aap?" (How are you?

Alok rubbed his forehead worriedly. "Theek hain, beta." (We're fine, beta.)

"Voh... baat yeh hai ki aaj Akaash ko chhuti mili hai," he heard Payal say. "Maasi kabse keh rahi thi ke Khushi aayi hai, to humein bhi ek baar ghar aana chaahiye. Aapko bura to nahin lagega, na?" (Actually... Akaash is home today and Maasi has been saying we should visit as Khushi is home. You won't mind will you?)

The old man half smiled, picturing his niece's twin babies. He would definitely not mind having those kids home. Both were adorable and he could hope they would bring some happiness during this time, when everything had fallen apart...

"Bilkul bhi nahin," he assured her, his smile growing wider. "Achha, tum log kab pohonch rahe ho?" (Not at all. When will you arrive?)

"Yahin, kareeb ek ghante mein." (Let's say one hour.)

"Please Di! Sirf thodi hi der ke liye! Ghar ke andar ghuttan si ho rahi hai. Hum bas garden mein hi honge!" (... Just for a little time! I feel like suffocating in the house. I'll be in the garden only!)

Anjali sighed. "Achha baba! Aap jaa sakti hai! Lekin promise karo ke aap jaise hi vaapas aaogi yeh soup finish karogi!" (Okay, fine! You can! But promise me you'll have to finish this soup once you return!)

Khushi gave the older woman a small smile. "Pakka!" (Promise!)

Arnav could not understand why, but he felt prickly and fidgety all of a sudden. Even when they had managed to get out of the jam, he felt no relief.

"Are you alright, Sir?" Aman reiterated. He had asked this question over ten times but his boss never replied to him. To speak truthfully, he had never seen Arnav Singh Raizada in this state. What could be wrong?

Arnav Singh Raizada never cancelled any meeting, and he knew how crucial this one was. Even if he was sick and almost dying, he did his best to keep his business before everything else in life. He was a real workaholic. And now? Aman wasn't quite sure the man who sat next to him really was his boss.

The sky was leaden above her head and she felt really, really cold. Never before had she ever witnessed such weather in India. All the flowers in the garden had strangely died, she noticed, and a frown formed on her face.

Could that mean something?

Khushi shrugged and walked deeper into the garden, in search of solace. But she found none. The guilt was still heavy on her heart.

She knew it was none of her fault for what Radhika had done and for what she was, but Khushi felt bad for her parents. She had never wanted things to turn out this way. She wished she could do something to set things right and bring back the happiness her family thrived in, but how? She looked around her. The cold had bitten every plant in the yard. All of them seemed diseased, some browning and blackening, others had dried out and lost their leaves.

It was like even the plants had been affected overnight. A tear rolled down her cheek but she made no effort to wipe it. If only she had been able to be on better terms with her sister. If only things could have been easier to deal with...

A red spot in the far end of the grounds caught her attention. Khushi blinked a few times to clear her tear-blurred vision and focused on it. A flower? She felt her feet take her closer to it, and the closer she got, the more her doubts were confirmed. It was a blood red rose. Probably the last living flower in the garden. So there could be the possibility of things being right again? There was still a ray of hope?

She started to smile as she neared the flower. Khushi held it between her thumb and index, her lips parting into a full-fledged grin. She bent down to smell it. The rose's sweet, intoxicating smell invaded her. Bliss...

A loud crunch from behind startled her so suddenly that she jumped and the flower broke in her hand. And before she could turn to see who it was, Khushi felt a sharp pain on the back of her head. She saw a quick flash of white dazzling light, then everything went black...

Wonderful update. Thanks for PM.

I hope Kushi is fine and Arnav comes on time as always to save her. How could they let her alone in garden when so much happened just the night before. Someone in family must at least be watching her from distance. Man! What a place to stop.
