I glare at Amar as I bite out my words in a whisper.

He looks at me with a mixture of regret and conciliation in his eyes.

"Dr Ashutosh ne sahi kaha ta...main hi apne zid pe adi ti...ab bhugat rahi hoon!"

Tears of self-pity flow down my cheeks. Why had I not listened to him? Why did I not realize that he would have my best interests at heart at all times? He loved me more than his life after all, didn't he? What was the point of all this recrimination?

"Did you have to fall injured in front of me...why couldn't you have gone and done it elsewhere?"

"But then, that would've spoilt all our plans?"

My eyes grow wide in shock.

"Plan? You mean this is all a plan? You planned to kidnap me? These are all your men? Did you see me somewhere and fall in love with me instantaneously? Oh God, are you going to ask me to marry you at gunpoint?"

Amar is unable to stop his guffaw.

"I think you watch a lot of B-grade Hindi films!"

"Shut up and answer my questions!"

"How can I do both?"

"Okay, don't shut up...I mean shut up about everything else but my questions...oh whatever!"

Amar cannot help another guffaw.

"Don't laugh at me. I will kill you!"

"What about the Hippocratic oath?"

I glare at him.

"Okay listen up...gotta get this done before those thugs come back!"

"Why are you so chicken? They are yours after all!"

"No, they are not. And stop interrupting. Do you want to hear the rest of the story or not?"

"I want to hear the truth!"

"Okay, the truth. And the truth is that getting shot and entering KGH was part of my plan, I mean our plan!"

"What do you mean by our plan? You have an accomplice too?"

"That I do!"

"Who is it? Tell me and I will make sure both of you rot in prison for the rest of your lives!"

"You wouldn't!"

"Of course, I would!"

"You mean you would send your own grandfather to prison?"

I am shocked out of my wits now. My lips seem to move but no words emerge!

"Nidhi, are you okay?"

I nod my head silently.

"You see, I am a student of psychology and I volunteer at Jeevan Sandhya. That is where I met your grandfather. I realized that he was very upset about something. After much probing, he revealed the story of your conflict. Right then, I realized that it was a case of silly ego!"

He looks at me triumphantly as if he has made a momentous discovery and I should award him the Nobel for it. All I want to do is thwack him on the head with the nearest log!

"Anyway, we got talking about it and I came up with this master plan of mine. I told him that I would enter your lives as a handsome stranger, flirt hard with you and make you fall in love with me and drive your husband crazy with jealousy!"

"Me fall in love with you?"

"Okay, that was an exaggeration but the whole point of this drama was to drive Dr AShutosh crazy with jealousy so he begged you to come back home to him?"

"You think he would have done that?"

"Of course, he would have. My plans never fail!"

"And this kidnap is also part of your plan?"

He has the grace to look a little shamefaced.

"This was unexpected. But then, it wasn't my fault. I could hardly tell my brother that I had paid some guys to shoot me. So, I pretended it was the work of his enemies. Unfortunately, he is a bhai twice over na...!"

"You paid guys to shoot you?"

"Not shoot me really! That was the idiots being over enthusiastic! The idea was just a tiny scrape. I didn't know they were such expert marksmen!"

He has a sulky expression on his face that I can't help giggling.

"Don't laugh! The idea was to fall injured in front of you. The whole drama was staged for your benefit so you could take me to KGH and I could get on with my act!"

"You thought of all this yourself?"

"Actually I took some help from a friend who writes plays and shows!"

I shake my head.

"And what of this kidnap?"

"Well, my bhai bhai went on the rampage and attacked the enemy camp because he thought they had attacked me. So, they just went and picked the two of us up!"

"How do we get out of here now?"

"Oh, don't worry. Bhai will think of something!"

"I don't care about your bhai. All I want is to go back to my husband! I want my Dr AShutosh and I want him now!"

I can't stop sobbing as the fear finally overtakes me.

Amar looks at me helplessly.

Suddenly, we hear the sound of the door opening.

The chief thug enters with a mobile in hand.

"Yeh le chore...apne bhai se baat kar...aakar le jaane ke liye bol...hum bhi dekhein ki Bajrang Bhai kaise gid gidate hain apne bhai ke jaan ke liye"!"

He laughs in a mean way and puts the speaker phone on.

"Bhai,,,,,jaldi aao bhai...humein yahan se chudakar le jaoo...!"

"Haan...please,,,jaldi aayiye...mujhe Dr Ashutosh ke paas jaana hai!"

The next instant, I hear a voice that is like music to my ears!

"Nidhi, don't worry...main aaraha hoon tumhe lene...I love you, sweetheart!"

"I love you too!"
