The first thoughts that came to mind on seeing the pomos of the ME were that of Raktabeeja's killing. But it would be rather abrupt if the creatives jumped to RB vadha w/o showing the preeceding incidents like Dumralochana vadha, Devi - Doota Samvada, etc.

So the asura in question may be Darukasura - who was killed by Bhadra Kali. This story is popular in Kerala and there is temple - Kodungallur Bhagavathi Temple- which is believed to have been the place where Darukasura was killed. (Since anyway the creatives are looking to Southern stories for inspiration Tongue)

Darukasura was an asura who got a boon from Brahma that he would be killed only by a woman. He became all powerful and tormented the three worlds. At this Shiva asks Parvati to take a ferocious form and kill Darukasur. Parvati takes the form of Bhadra Kali and wages war against Daruka. Since her form is of Tamasic Nature,  while killing Daruka she drinks his blood. But she finds she is unable to stop her killing spree or her war dance.

Finding no other way to  stop Kali's aghora- nritya, Shiva lies on her path and she accidentally steps on him, thus halting her march. (There is no account of this in Rakta beeja vadha in DSS)

According to some other accounts Shiva takes the form of a small child and lying on the battlefield begins to cry. Hearing the baby's cries, Bhadra-Kali's maternal instincts are aroused and she suckles the baby. Shiva slowly sucks away the blood of the asura that Bhadra - Kali had drunk and she calm down.

A popular folk dance in Kerala - Padayani is based on this Bahdra- Kali and Darukasur story.

But wasn't Bhadrakali (along w/ Veerbhadra) created from Shiva's jata?  That's what I thought was the main difference b/w Bhadrakali & Mahakali - the former was a derivative of Mahadev, and the latter was a derivative of Parvati (in Ganesh's revenge) and Ambika (in DSS)

This Bhadrakali - Darukasura story is the local legend of a temple in Payangadi, Kerala. There are other shrines for Bhadrakali in Kerala which believe the same story. Since it is a local legend, it may not be Puranically accurate.

The depiction of the Goddess in these temples is  similar to the Mahakali - amongst the several hands that she has, one holds a severed bleeding head.
