A policeman attacked a mentally challenged man with a lathi, who eventually started bleeding. The crowd did not try to intervene. The man was then tied with ropes and carried towards the police station.

A toll plaza attendant was shot dead in Gurgaon by a driver. Initial reports suggest that the 22-year-old attendant, Umesh Kumar Pandey, was killed over payment of Rs. 27 as toll tax the standard amount needed for cars entering or leaving Gurgaon.

In another case in June this year, a man was set on fire by a crowd in Gurgaon for a crime that was not proved. The police is seen on camera standing by as the man is engulfed by flames.

Reading such news does make one wonder whether we have become emotionally bankrupt and insensitive? Are we just a bunch of apathetic individuals who really don't give two hoots about what others suffer through?

Since such kind of news keep surfacing one day or the outher,we have become kind of use to such things and have started adjusting with such practices. We have become emotionally insensitive to a large extent, and as far as matters dont involve us we prefer to keep our ourself distanced. Moreover there are a lot of incidents where If someone tries to stop such things ,they are met with the same fate.So the question isshould we risk our lives ?

In one of the incident which came into news recently,a brother was brutally stabbed by some boys when he tried to stop them from harassing his sister, and people did bring him to some police station nearby. There were policemen around there and they must have seen him but didnt even bother to call an ambulance or anything.Later that man died.

Anyone from the policestation could have rushed him to the hospital or even tried to catch those accused, but NO the policemen didnt even look at him. What kind of behavious is that. Are tehse the people who are responsible for protecting the common man.

People are too blinded by greed to have any sorts of humane feelings or emotions in them.

You are right. We have developed a kind of detachment to such news only because it is so common.
The question is not about risking lives but rather standing united in the face of wrong.

I feel that most people think of themselves as being invincible, that nothing wrong (accident, mugging, robbery) would happen to them but of course in the end we are mere mortals and may end up in such a situation.  What would we do then? What if the police don't help? What if the crowd doesn't intervene? It's a scary thought.

I guess there are some people that derive pleasure from such things.

I have no comments. Humans dont behave like they're humans.. They obviously have got no heart or even any sense whatsoever.

 what more can be said.

Rather than apathy, I think in India it is fear that drives people in situation like this. Cops are corrupt and wield power. People with money and rank can have their way. The common man is terrified that any action may result in retaliation against them and their family.

Otherwise, I do believe most people try to do the right thing.

I don't know. Maybe that's true to some extent. People are afraid to stand up even for themselves, let alone for others.
