A still from Diya Aur Baati Hum
When Sooraj, the humble halwai from Pushkar, first decided to participate in the prestigious World's Top Cook Competition, no one believed that the class 10 dropout would last so long in this tough competition.
Today this underdog has reached the semifinals and is enthralling the international panel with his knowledge and display of Indian flavour and spice. His journey
from being a halwai to someone worthy of the title has been fraught with hurdles, which he has been able to overcome with the help and support of his wife Sandhya.
The competition has seen a role reversal from Sooraj being the supportive husband - who made all possible attempts to ease Sandhya's entry and acceptance into the Rathi household - to Sandhya being the supportive wife, who has not only helped Sooraj overcome the language barrier (he couldn't speak fluently in English), but also has been his pillar of strength in the competition. In fact, it was Sandhya who realised Sooraj's dream of winning a competition and pushed him to participate in it.
It seemed that an Indian may indeed win such an esteemed international competition when the judges threw a googly at Sooraj (who eats only vegetarian food) in the semifinals, asking for chicken as the core ingredient to be used in the dish.
Sooraj refused to cook non-vegetarian food, citing a matter of principles and decided to walk out of the competition. His decision came as a surprise to both the judges and the other contestants for whom cooking non-vegetarian food was no big deal.
Here too, Sandhya's presence of mind came in handy when she challenged the judges' decision and requested them to reconsider and allow Sooraj to cook vegetarian food. Sooraj's fate is now in the hands of the audience who can give him a chance to stay in the competition by cooking vegetarian food.
