Has the bubble finally burst?
She was Lakshmi, Durga, Sita and Savitri. No wonder Tulsi Virani is on the verge of a breakdown, says our correspondent
Bhawana Somaaya
New Delhi, October 24: THERE is a limit to the extent you can exaggerate emotions and relationships and Ekta Kapoor has surpassed all these limits in her various Balaji teleserials, particularly Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.

Tulsi was appealing because she was unsure and always seeking reassurance. Over the last few episodes, however, the creative team has transformed her into an overbearing, self-opinionated character devoid of humility or rationality
Kapoor has been hooted by feminists, sued by professionals and condemned by sociologists. But somehow, nothing seems to make a difference. The TRP ratings soar higher and her lead stars gain more popularity.

But it is about time Kapoor and her creative team step off the TRP treadmill to introspect. And the time is right now, when her most coveted character, Tulsi Virani, of the highly popular serial Kyunki... is on the verge of a breakdown.

This had to happen sooner or later. In the last three years, Tulsi Virani's has been portrayed as holier than the Ganges and stronger than Mother Earth. She exhibited the courage of a soldier and the wisdom of a hermit. But that wasn't sufficient for her creators. So when feminists protested, they twisted her character into a gender issue. When reformers cried foul, they resorted to references from mythology. When the elections drew close, they transformed Tulsi

Virani into a mouthpiece for the RSS. She was the custodian of tradition, the touchstone of past and present scriptures. During Diwali they reincarnated her as Goddess Lakshmi, the only one responsible for preserving peace and prosperity in the large joint family. During Navratri, she emerged as the fiery Durga, resolving every domestic crisis singlehandedly. To portray her as a martyr she was made to go through a trial by fire, a la Sita in Ramayana. She stayed away from the family in Haridwar till Ram alias Mihir Virani acknowledged his mistake. And to prove her heroism, she was made a Savitri, bringing her husband to life when Mihir is presumed to be dead.

At the same time, it wasn't as if Tulsi was infallible. She had her share of misadventures. To begin with, her marriage, against stiff opposition. She gave away her son for adoption to an undeserving sister-in-law, lived with strangers in the wake of a memory loss, passed off her sister's illegitimate child as her second born, and hid the news of her second son's abduction by the underworld from the family. Still, despite her multiple failings Tulsi was appealing because she was unsure and always seeking reassurance. Over the last few episodes, however, the creative team has transformed her into an overbearing, self-opinionated character devoid of humility or rationality. Her arbitrary decisions concerning the family reflect a severely prejudiced and egocentric individual, used to having her own way. There is nothing more unattractive about a marriage than a self-righteous wife hurling accusations at her husband's ex-flame... Nothing more undignified than a mother replaying the favours she has bestowed on her stepson... And Tulsi has done both. It is difficult to accept that Tulsi's recent vitriolic arguments don't bear the slightest residue of the earlier sober, mature person. Assuming that the turnaround of the character is deliberate, to make a hero of the husband, one wonders whether we need the man to be the crusader after she has fought all the battles on her own?

The bubble has finally burst. Unmistakably, there is contradiction in the premise of the show. Kapoor needs to sort this out before Tulsi Virani turns into another Frankenstein.

I think this article is correct. They have always shown tulsi as some goddess, and what all she said to karan, i dont think even a normal woman can say all that to some child. She was shown is a very different light from what was shown when the serial started.

And what all she said to mihir about mandira, correct she was right, but either you dont forgive a person for such mistake, and if you do you dont remind that person his mistakes again and again and this is what tulsi did.

And now when she knows that she was wrong, i think they should show her apologising to mihir.  But tulsi virani, the goddess can never apologise coz she can never be wrong!!!!!
