I don't want ot be party pooper but Junglee has asked them to prepare 'Merchant of Venice' not 'Romeo and Juliet' . And unlike Romeo and Juliet love is not the central theme here but its 'Mercy' . Which is much more apt in current context.

Exactly. The play's "Merchant of Venice" and like you have mentioned, the main theme in that particular play was Mercy as well as a supporting theme of self-interest versus love. Both themes seem to be fitting in their situation in various degrees. Besides, unlike Romeo and Juliet, which is a tragedy, Merchant of Venice is a "tragic comedy" and this whole situation also has a comic tone along with an underlying "tragic" tone in the form of the supporting stories of each of the characters.
